Does anyone know what is keeping the system in its current state?
Politics is a big part of it, who's going to pay for it. While completely inside New York City, it's controlled by New York State, so the money has to come from the state assembly and governor, who have to answer to the rest of the state outside the city, most of whom don't want their tax money going solely to the city.
If we had a direct population vote as you insinuate, then Los Angeles alone would overwhelm all of the votes of Oklahoma and Wyoming which deprives those states of representation. The electoral college assures their views are represented.
And then we'd be stuck with a government that represents the people more than the land.
The electoral college allows fewer people in more land to dominate more people in less land. And why should more people have their representation deprived simply because they choose to live geographically closer to one another?
sorry, "AA Battery" means something entirely different
We have this thing called "context" where a particular word or phrase can have different meanings under different circumstances. AA batteries, in this context, are the tiny cylindrical objects that provide electrical power to low voltage devices, not the things that shoot Messerschmidts out of the sky.
And coincidentally, we're talking about these AA batteries, "the tiny cylindrical objects that provide electrical power" in the context of security and preventing them from taking airplanes down out of the sky.
Say, whatever happened to those explorer.exe replacements in the Windows scene?
Somewhere on floppies I have the source code for the Toolbox one from PC-Kwik (formerly Multisoft), where I worked in the mid-90's before the company went out of business. It was a nice one, very simple and quick to use.
I've never known a single developer who could get away with wearing a hoodie in an office
I'm a developer wearing a hoodie in my office right now, while I work on some accounting reporting software. In fact, I think there's only been one job in my 24 year career where I couldn't dress this casual.
Both left and right have anti-science wings, both basically religious in nature. They are both slowly losing power as reality is observed by real world humans.
They might be losing numbers in terms of people and members, but they're gaining tremendous power these days.
I've been noticing that, especially with orange juice. The half gallon is now slightly less... I lived overseas for a decade while I think it was starting to happen, so it was sort of a shock to me when I returned to the U.S. to find that.
That's why I brought it up as the solution to the OP's idea that it wouldn't work if people can now get the full amount out. The manufacturer's will just reduce the full amount and keep the price the same.
...that will never work.... and you would sell less bottles as you would squeeze more out of each. I cannot see how the manufacturers would be interested in that.
Manufacturers can easily work around that. They'll just sell smaller bottles.
The 64oz bottle will now be the 62oz bottle and the 32oz bottle will become the 30oz bottle. They can make the label a little larger and it'll barely be noticeable, while people get the thrill out of getting every last ounce of ketchup.
Back when I was a college student with an LG mini-fridge in my dorm room I could've used this. At least, if it was smart enough to send me a warning "hey dumbshit, you left a can of pop in the freezer and if you don't get your ass back here soon it's gonna burst and make a blood mess."
generation as a whole choose to ignore the warning
I don't know about ignoring the warning. There was no ignorance. It was more like willfully disregarding the warning because listening to music quietly is simply not cool. Not cool at all.
The best thing about New Delhi is that it's an hour or two in a coach bus to Agra and the Taj Mahal
I think the best thing about Delhi is Hauz Khas, which is, of course, a beautiful historical building, within Delhi. Or a few old ones together. Quiet, somewhat run down and a peaceful spot in a city of awesome chaos.
The flip side is the horrendous air pollution, nonstop coughing for nine to ten days (the lengths of the trips I had there), leading to some of the worst nosebleeds I've had in my life.
Here's my idea of proper adult supervision. "Here you go, kid. There's only one thing I want you to remember: Nothing you see on a screen can hurt you, because nothing you see on a screen is real. Have fun."
Spoken like a true human who's never earned the title of parent.
Hey, I do babysitting for $15 an hour... Here's my number, 36-24-36, give me a call...
Wait? What? Is this well known? Because, damn, reading your comment, that might just solve the problem of why all the customers of our accounting software are pissed off at us...
21 microunits, each packed with a tiny kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living space into 300-square-feet
I don't get it... Why are they calling 300 square feet "microunits"? Sounds like a relatively normal size to me... Of course, I live in midtown Manhattan, so for $2,200 a month my wife and I get a 350 square foot place in a building with 20 of them (though I think unit 1D, by the stairwell might be smaller). We have a nice kitchen...

To stay calm, she said she does yoga, and recently tried a pottery class
And bicycles to work every day.

It's not like the continentals are going to erect a wall and stop trading.
What about a moat?
The company says it is yet to determine the markets it will sell the refurbished Note 7 units
Probably the markets around the world with fewer lawyers to sue them when they catch fire.
3. films.: six sequels to the fast and the furious?
Man, I just saw a poster in the subway station for a seventh sequel to The Fast and the Furious.
Only 15 times? I can jump even more than that in four years.
Yes, but will you?

97 Companies... So close. Just three more, 100 companies, and the White House would get a set of free steak knives.
As a society, we have 3 options: ...
Now which one is it going to be?
You missed our current political situation's option 4:
4. Tax breaks for the rich.
DoT has informed airlines that they can stop pre-flight warnings about Galaxy Note7 smartphones
But do they now have to give pre-flight warnings about not using Samsung washing machines on the plane?
I hope the brakes on the truck hold out...
Mashed bananas are useful in some recipes, though.

What other laptop/tablet/smartphone/smartwatch/headphones aren't meh?
There's not much innovation going on right now.
Note 7 was a bang!
I hope someone is keeping track of my much money is spend on getting people running Windows 10 compared to other OSes.
I'll bet Microsoft is keeping careful track of that.
