So? They *might* be exposing themselves to a higher frequency of short-term compromise but frankly the people with the know-how to do this and the equipment and the will dont exist in vast numbers.
The worst thing they could have done is 'play it cool' and downplay this. This would only encourage people to continue compromising their cards and give the MBTA little incentive to get off its collective ass.
As it stands now, this is so publicized that every transit organization around the world is freaking out about its level of encryption. This will have some pretty positive long-term consequences.
Im glad they didnt play it cool. The Streisand effect sometimes has unintended positive consequences.
Im not sure what you mean, but i can change the default sound device in Windows easily. This is nice if you have a soundcard and a usb sound device. Its under the audio tab in Sounds and Audio devices in the control panel.
Then whos been doing the testing for all the mars landers with parachutes? I know some of them used the "airbag method" but unless my memory is faulty, NASA has been using parachutes for a while. Perhaps not in a manned application, which Im sure adds a lot of complexity to the project.
1. Telsa's wireless power system 2. Radio waves, cell phones, television, satellite communications
The trick here isnt to shed power everywhere, but to do it without destroying our wireless infrastructure. I kinda picture a Tesla dominated alternate history where we have all the socialized wireless power we can handle but no wireless communications, at least outside of strictly controller government applications, but none for you and me./insert joke about picking option 2 because of annoying cell phones and bad tv here
Isnt this some kind of popular fallacy? "THROW MORE MONEY AT IT." Something tells me thats not a solution for everything. Some things arent fixable and others arent worth fixing. I like to stay out of MS threads on slashdot, but lets not
Personally, my theory is that Vista is 'good enough' and will be maintained enough to keep MS afloat until Windows 7 comes out. I also think that XP is 'good enough' and am baffled by the love people have of it. Heck, the cost of fixing Vista to your specifications may be more than developing 7.
That said every company budgets x amount for marketing. Its part of the capitalist game. There's no shortage of good products that lack decent marketing and of course no shortage of lousy products with great marketing.
That said I expect Vista to be just like XP. XP took way too many resources to work. I remember how 2000 beat its pants off, sp2 or sp3 will be released, people will use it, and then they'll move on to 7. Some might jump ship to Apple when their old XP machine dies. To 99% of the users, this stuff is 'good enough' and MS knows it.
>which most users simply are not going to use in an average desktop login session
I honestly dont think that is true. If a user says "I just surf the web and check email, I dont need this junk" then what they are really saying:
1. Im a chronic youtube and facebook junkie. I have a dozen tabs open at a time. 2. I run 4 IM clients at the same time and they all must do video and sound. 3. I run tons of useless utilities and junk applets because Im afraid of change. 4. I need a pirated version of photoshop on here and it needs to run quick. 5. I have torrents running 24/7. 6. I open every attachment I get.
Etc. The idea that you dont need all these devices and libraries doesnt mesh with my experience. This idealized state doesnt exist in my reality.
Yep, not only does GW have this feature, but in City of Heroes you can group with a friend with a new character, make them a sidekick and then he is one level below you for the duration. This solves a lot of grouping issues because the people who are online are not usually at your level. So you invite them, sidekick/lackey them, and off you go. Once you ungroup he's back to his original level. No need for robots.
Are they really making a profit at 50 dollars per user per year? It seems that this is all subsidized by their search and text ads, which is an unrelated business and may have some anti-trust issues in the future. Id like to see them compete on the real economics of running this kind of thing. Id be worried about a scenario like suddenly raising the price once theyve done damage to microsoft.
Worse it means that when a professional scientist is quoted about global warming then a GOP hack gets equal airtime.
When a church has a bake sale then an atheist gets to rant about the crusades.
When a cat photo is posted, then a fail dog photo must be posted.
etc
Perhaps it made sense when information came only from radio and tv, and a handful of companies owned all the mass media, but on the internet things are a little different.
Exactly. I remember how comedians treated the Clinton administration. It was incredibly nasty over trivial things and Bush gets a free pass on a lot of stuff compared to Clinton. Arguably, they are more harsh on Democrats because they might self-identify as Democrat and dont think theyre doing any damage or being inappropriate. Banter among friends and all that. And of course, sex sells. Clinton's affair probably launched 100 comedians careers.
If Obama becomes president its really going to be the same deal. We're going to hear about how he isnt really liberal, how both parties are the same, easy jabs at the realpolitik, etc. Which is the same self-deceptive rhetoric that got Nader a million votes and arguably helped put Bush into office.
That's because a large part of humour is breaking taboos and mocking authority. If youre a conservative youre not going to take a radical position and try to shock the audience or attempt to mock those who sign your paycheck. Its not part of the conservative character, thus this terrible hateful comedy they attempt.
There is tons of conservsative humor, but its 100% unintentional. With the right mindset O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh are fricking hilarious.
I have a 1.5mbps dsl line. Thats the fastest DSL I can get. It costs me 25 dollars a month. I can move up to a 4 mbps cable line for 70 dollars a month. That's a rip-off as far as Im concerned. These studies need to take municipal monopoly pricing into account. You cant brag about speed if you're paying through the nose for it, or if you offer in poor areas and only a few can afford it.
That's like how to the soviets would brag about luxury automobile production but only party loyalists and high-level government kleptocrats could ever afford one.
I'd like to see a metric like "3-4mbps for under 30 a month" and "4-8 for under 50 a month" and "8+ for under 60" a month.
>and cars that start playing Rick Astley when you're out on a date.
Considering how young most slashdotters are, I wouldnt be surprised if more than one person reading that was conceived in a car while Rick Astley was on the radio. You may partly owe your existence to Rick Astley.
>mannequin Skywalker mugging through "oops, I accidentally blew up the android control satellite" as R2D2 comically whistles and squeaks,
He's no worse than Mark Hamil.
> Natalie Portman's ridiculous accent,
Oh please all the movies are full of ridiculous accents.
> the preposterous locale for the big lightsaber duel
But the Death Star with its magical earth-like gravity generator makes sense?
Look, the original three had a lot of creative spark and energy in them, and a couple of good actors who stole the show, but most of all you were like 5 years old when they came out. To kids today the new movies are just as good. At the end of the day I have to agree with Lucas and say that these are really kids movies and we are simply nostalgic for them.
There's also no shortage of original star trek fans who saw TNG as bland, sexless, and too serious.
I think Lucas is just getting on in years and we are not seeing output from a motivated young man trying to break into hollywood, but an older billionaire who is still making films.
I dont see how the political spectrum has anything to do with this. I live in a 'blue' state but out side the big cities its a 'red' state. Your metaphor is cute, but hardly accurate.
Massachusetts really has a hate-on for technology. Remember Boston's ATHF 'bomb' scare? I think theyre probably suffering from post-9/11 uber-security and our federal tax dollars are paying for it. Red or Blue, it doesnt matter, once law enforcement is told to act a certain way because of terrorism and if they dont they will lose federal money, then they will act that way.
We have no idea what the cause was. Usually a BSOD is driver or hardware related. I wonder what garbage lowest-bidder "state owned" computer producer sold them some junk along with junk drivers. Seems more likely than payola from bgates.
Im also very surprised their configuration is to stay on the BSOD screen instead of rebooting immediately. I havent seen a real BSOD in years.
Except in this case "we shall pay it" in real life means no one is paying it and theyve shut it down. Come down from your high horse for a moment and give a practical solution.
Physical well-being? Its a freakshow of people who train hard everyday since childhood and many of whom are serious drug abusers.
Its the ultimate dirty competition where countries exploit little kids. Thats not even mentioning how dirty IOC is.
These people can no way compete monthly on this level. You would just have a batch of different winners every so often.
That's ignoring the flawed economics. Youre not sitting around watching this stuff monthly. You'll watch a little every 4 years. No way advertisers are paying those rates monthly.
I agree. Its entertainment. It shouldnt matter if its not "real."
I was recently in Kansas City and hear about how their WWI memorial is always strapped for cash and this years budget doesnt let them burn the eternal flame all year long because natural gas is so expensive. I told the people I was with that they should just put in lights to simulate the flame. Its probably cheaper and doesnt involve any burning. They thought I was crazy. I dont see the real difference. Some people have some pretty odd ideas of what makes something "real."
The new slashcode will replace your password with asterisks if you type it out in a comment.
Here's mine: **********
See?
Give it a try.

Thast not a lot. They probably dont have an international plan, so they were charged ala carte fees.
For those of us used to VOIP, its crazy, but phone companies still charge out the wazoo for calls.

Sure did, except your mom had 9 kids of which 5 survived into adulthood.
Good old days!

Your post is almost 100% bullshit political conjecture about 'illegals,' corporate american, and employment. BTW, RN salaries here:

Yeah, they make 60k, not 10-20k.

OSS doesn't solve the lack of support issue. Unless there's a signed support contract you'll find most companies wont want anything to do with it.
