It's always good to have a company that is willing to put some money into the growth of their employees skills. My prior employer was not great about that, but my current one is.
That being said, you're career is just that, you're career. If it's something you care about, you should be willing to invest some of your own money into making yourself as awesome at it as you can be. Without that willingness, you should consider doing something different. While things have changed in your personal situation, and you may not be able to make this conference because of travel costs (though you can make some pretty cheap travel and lodging arrangements in vegas), I don't think this should cause a complete rethink of your situation if everything else about it is good.
Do your best to invest in yourself, it's nice when others will invest in you as well, but don't let the lack of that hold you back.
I'm going out on a limb, disclosing this publicly and all. But all vehicles on the roads today are vulnerable to a nefarious flat bed truck with a winch. Said driver pulls up to the vehicle, lowers the ramp, attaches the winch, and pulls the target vehicle onto the truck. Once vehicle is secured to the truck, they drive away. I've not contacted any manufacturers on this vulnerability, but I feel that disclosing it publicly may keep the public informed.
They don't really seem to have any convincing external factors to make them evolve. I have not RTFA'd, but most things evolve because they have trouble surviving. There are so few of these things that they are endangered, but they don't have any natural predators because they apparently make anything that eats it sick... check the wikipedia article on them.
So this all seems well and good, until you think that these folks probably then walk down to their store and ask for a new phone. The number gets transferred to the new phone, and the NYC police are now monitoring all of your calls because you reported your phone stolen.
You know thinking about the talking book, and amazon's kindle with whispernet... it seems only natural to think that the primer from Diamond Age could be just around the corner for some enterprising group of folks.
I agree, sailing is a bit of a chore, it gets to be less slow when you can ride the cyclones. I really, at this point (haven't quite completed the game yet) am really tired of the phantom hourglass temple of the ocean king parts. Seriously, I get tired of going through the motions time after time just to get a new level. Seriously, how many times do I need to go through those first six floors? Great they give me a portal after a while for the first 6, but then I have to redo the next set of floors repeatedly. Talk about tedious...
However all in all, I really like the game...
Of course that 11/hr you mention apparently does not get taxed, have anything removed for social security/medicare or any deductions for other retirement funds or health care.
If A holes are outlawed, then only outlaws will have A holes...
hmmm... guess the **AA folks made the conversion long ago seeing as they are so full of crap...
Point number two is pointless. Helium is not explosive, it's a noble gas... remember your high school physics and chemistry... the noble gases are almost completely non reactive.
The unfortunate thing is that YDL has dropped support for the oldworld rom architecture. So now your beige g3's and the wallstreet powerbooks and earlier are no longer officially supported.
The only place where I could see this helping is being able to take the IP address assigned to a nameserver someplace else. Nameservers moving across IP space sucks. However, it's still a stupid idea.
Sure, I bet all the hardware, OS, and applications people are going to jump right on and support this. Especially the open source ones.
Even if they all did... What's to stop me from ripping the image and repeatedly using that. Or ripping off one superb quality MP3 or OV and using that for my burns.
When will they learn that prohibiting us only inspires us to find ways around it!
this available to terrorists thing is such a farce. A GPS receiver is available for as little as $90. And one with WAAS one can achieve accuracy of about 3ft 95% of the time if they are in an area served by the ground based error correction stations (which is pretty much all of the USA). This is currently available to terrorists if they want it anyhow. And anyone can set up their own Differential beacon... to improve accuracy even more. Hell they used to do it when the fuzz factor was still on with GPS.
I've used one of the take apart manuals for my wallstreet g3. It had the infamous solder joint on the powerboard problem (solder and superglue fixed that) the hard drive was one of the 8gb ones that had a really low mtbf... which has been replaced with a 20gb 5400 rpm... the processor card wouldn't recognize memory in the top slot so it's been replaced with a sonnet g3/500 and 384 mb of ram now.
The take apart guides are nice, common sense is good, patience for that first time you take it apart. Make sure you have all the screws out! The g3 books feel like you are going to break them that first time you pull them open.
Fun though, to play around inside your apple.
Yes, it will void your warranty. Also if you shelled out the $300 for apple care it will void that. Doing anything besides a RAM upgrade, or possibly an airport/ap extreme card voids your warranty. These are the only consumer supported upgrades apple will support on the powerbook.
If it exploded when I told it to.

...Zenrandom, and I fight for the users. Now make with the light cycles.
I for one, volunteer my services as the on-site information security professional for diagnosis, cleanup, and protection. Space Suit Up!

unfortunately I won't get how insightful your comment is in order to mod it up until the day after tomorrow...

I'm sorry but the system of equations used to determine that percentage are copyrighted. You are only entitled to the percentage.

Because the human brain is the most massively parallel computer (albeit an organic one) in the world.
