  1. Re:Linux on Solid-State Mini-ITX Linux Recording Studio HOWTO · · Score: 1

500 dollars for just a software recording package is a lot of money for ametuer musicians who have to make a decision between a nice software package and a instrument, a microphone, or even more importantly those who need to money for houeshold items. A talented person may never record if the choice is between 500 dollars for software or 500 dollars for cloths for the kids.

  2. Linux on Solid-State Mini-ITX Linux Recording Studio HOWTO · · Score: 2, Interesting

Projects like this really stress the usefulness of Linux. Professional sound products that can cost HUDNREDS of dollars (and still be difficult to use and hard to understand) need the competition from projects like this. As a weekend warrior musicians and full time geek during the week projects like this speak to all my interests. Linux offers a wonderful alternative and can fill the niche VERY nicely. Not to mention the ability to add on more as you see fit. This is good for linux, good for musicians, and good for the masses (in that it will be easier to produce quality music that doesn't need the big labels to be able to afford hte software.)

I wonder if that would be considered pirating by the MPAA. Smart people out there would figure out a way to "download" the movie from the frame generated. Then there would be no reason to see it in the theater. Just playing the devils advocate. Personally I think it would be REALLY cool :)

Defien Expanded Universe. Are we talking about books here? Are books considered Canon for the Star Wars world? I though only the movies were "what really happened" and the books are just works that use the universe as a canvas for their story. Did Luke go Dark Side in the books? Now my interest is high :)

How does Luke end up as a representative of the dark side? He forsakes it. NOw I am confused. Is it the temptation?

  6. Re:Everquest and Money on Economics of Online Gaming · · Score: 2

True, the "fun" aspect is not included in my post. I stopped playing because of the effect it was having on my real life. I was engaged,(the game ironically paid a large portion of the engaement ring), I was graduating, I was ready to enter the real world. My wife's thoughts (and mine) were that it's hard to enter the real world and succeed if you are spending a good portion of your life in a fantasy world. The point I was trying to make is you can't make money on the game. Play a game for the enjoyment, not for the profit, you won't come out ahead vs. real world endeavours.

  7. Everquest and Money on Economics of Online Gaming · · Score: 5, Insightful

I played EQ for a year and a half, averging 20 hours a week. (Quite a bit as I look back) When I "got out" I sold my character on a auction site and got 800 dollars for it! I couldn't believe it I thought that it was awesome money. Then I realized if I averaged out my time and what I got for my character, it was only like 50 cents an hour. That being said, my average was more like a "minimum" every week with some weeks being > 35 hours of game play. The other thing this study doesn't take in account for is that Sony ACTIVELY (when I played, things may have changed) fights out of game transactions, and selling in game money and items for real money. So your "PLAT" may be worth a cent each, but good luck cashing in!

True. But that assumes you take the time to scan all the ports at a given IP address. Many Script kiddies will go to a certain port and scan for it. They don't have the patience to scan a single IP for all ports. I agree with parent (and I do similar things) It just another layer in a multi layer model for security. It's not the end all and be all, but it helps.

Will Comcast allow ports coming in to be opened? I could see them not allowing us to SSH and TS into our home boxes. (I suppose that techincally is against their TOS) I LOVE having remote access to home. It's a wonderful way to browse sites that may or may not be work related without leaving gobs of cookie dough all over the work PC :)

Yes it works, the problem is it won't stop calls. Spyboy may still corrupt the winsock by deleting the applications and not reseting the chain. (The name of this chain eludes me right now.) I ran across an example of this. Someone had run SpyBot on a friends computer and deleted all the spyware. Great. Now her internet didn't work. I could connected, but I had no DNS resoulution. (Actually, anything with TCP/UDP didn't work) I coudl Ping etc just not TCP. After a lot of research, I found that some spyware installed itself into the "chain" that winsock uses. (Please fill in the holes here, I can't find the reference page I used earlier) Basically, the way I read it was that this spyware recieved the packets BERFORE the OS, then it forwared them on to the OS. Wonderful. When the spyware was deleted, then that chain was broken and the packets wouldn't get to the OS. I had reinstall Winsock to get it working. It was a PAIN. And the actual PROBLEM was caused when the spyware was deleted. Lovely.
