What, compared to the people who post the Beowulf/Soviet Russia/SCO jokes a million times over? Hard to get a worse sense of humour than them, as even this "new" 7xxxxx user is sick of their lame jokes.
Think about it; how is throwing more and more hardware at it going to solve the problem? What we're lacking is the software itself needed to do this, and it's obviously not going to be an easy task to write. I see no reason why an AI as intelligent as a human couldn't be implemented on a slower system, unless "thinks as fast as a human" is among the requirements.
(disclaimer, I've never read the book, these are just my opinions)
I do. If you actually checked Slashdot Japan out, you'd notice that they often link to the original-language version of pages and also have a translation. It's not necessary, but if you understand both languages it's always nice to read the original instead of relying on a translation.
I read that, and I still think it's a dumb site. They want to see their own race represented more as equals, yet they use lines like "help the Latino community bind together". I can understand doing things like that based on language, but race? Pretty screwy IMHO.
No, no, no. We're not talking about the OS failing completely, but about it operating incorrectly. Say that it messes up and causes the fans to spin much lower than they should (or not at all), causing massive overheating. I know there's safeguards for when the fans aren't under OS control, but what about when they are and there's an OS problem?
It's posssible that the firmware will override the OS in such a situation, but I've never heard anything about something like that.
Er, I call bullshit. First off, the Powerbooks that can't run OS9 natively were released about a year after MI3 (about a year and a half later in the case of the 15 inch model). The minimal operating system for these is 10.2.3, so I don't know where you're getting 10.1 from..
Also, did it say that it was compatible with OS X on the box (I very much doubt it)? If not, this isn't really Aspyr's fault; a lot of OS9 games don't run well (or at all) under Classic, which you should have anticipated or at least looked up.
...which really doesn't address the grandparent poster's concern. Obviously the OS overrides the bios, but what happens if there's a problem with the OS? Considering how this story is about support in Linux for the cooling system, I can't believe you got modded up.
Is anyone else somewhat creeped out by that website? I'd find it equally weird if there was a "Caucasian Review" or something similar, entertainment reviews based on race are just pretty strange.
That's definitely a pretty isolated problem, no idea why you have it on 3 machines. A lot of people (including me) use it with no problems. Sucks that it won't work for you, but I've never had any problems that bad with it.
That's about the worst example I can think of. They can already do that at the cashier (and they do, in some places), so how is this going to change things? Yes, it's ridiculous that they restrict the sale of items that could possibly be used to make illegal things, but it's not like this will make things worse.
Same, I have nothing but good things to say about MEC stuff. My previous MEC backpack lasted me about 5-6 years, and my current one seems to be holding up just as well. It might be slightly more expensive than other backpacks, but it's well worth it. While my classmates were buying backpacks that would fall apart every yeah, I just kept on using the same one.
On an amusing note, you can pretty much always recognize a Canadian abroad if they have a MEC backpack. Is MEC a West Coast thing? Seems like the people who wear MEC backpacks are usually from around Vancouver (as am I).
Well, there's a large difference between what the grandparent poster is suggesting, and what Nintendo is doing. I wouldn't mind paying for a portable cartridge with multiple classic games, especially newer ones like Ocarina of Time (which is possibly the best game ever in my opinion). However, paying $20 for one old NES game is insane, especially when the technology allows for tons of NES games on a single cartridge.
Amusingly enough, it should also be noted that Yellow Dog Linux doesn't run on i386 machines either. So, no, I wouldn't say "most users will be out of luck" when this is a story about YDL.
This really bugs me, as the owner of a new Powerbook. I spent way too much on this relatively underpowered laptop, and Apple chooses not to include this feature which is common on even the cheapest PC laptops? Weak. For a laptop of this price, I shouldn't have to resort to hacks for that.
I'm pretty sure that this is an incomplete archive. The version found here is much bigger (about 268 megs), yet the file name is the same. Also, that file you linked to seems to make Stuffit lock up.
Geographic information system, yes. Even though it's not capitalized or anything (which would go a long way towards clarifying things), I'll concede that you're right about that. But how on earth am I supposed to associate FOI with something listead as FIC (Freedom Information Commission) in the summary? That's just ridiculous, and shows the quality of writing on Slashdot. Real newspapers don't have writing like this, and for good reason.
Hey, congratulations for completely missing the point. Could you point out where I said I didn't read the summary? While you're at it, could you point out where I said I didn't understand it? Hmm, probably not, because I was talking about the headline. I was saying that it's harder to comprehend than it should be, and rightfully so.

Is it wrong that I wouldn't know of Roomba if it weren't for Achewood?

I think the reason lies within the latter.

Not quite everybody on here lives in North America or Europe...
Ah, thanks. Seems weird to say it, but it's good to know I was wrong.

1) the OS can control very well the heat, if it's working and properly designed
Just read the article: "This version (#4) fixes a bug with the backside fan doing crazy things, it appears to work properly on the dual 2.5Ghz now."
I think simply expecting all sofware to perform flawlessly is a bad idea when you're talking about something that could damage your hardware.

You can have my bag of 4/6/8/10/12/20/30 sided dice when you pry them from my COLD DEAD HANDS.
(joking aside, D&D just wouldn't be the same without the dice)

Your sig is pretty appropriate if you couldn't figure out what he meant.

Link re: the sending Candians abroad to be tortured part here. This is frigging terrifying.

My bad. It seems like the 3D Gamers link is good, but the other two aren't.
