Seriously, though, I heard on NPR (National Public Radio) way back in 2001 that most of the audio CD protection schemes can be circumvented with a sharpie... why is this suddenly back in the news now?

  3. Re:I am dissapointed in Intel on Comparing Linux C and C++ Compilers · · Score: 0

Isn't the larger binary file/slower code just due to the fact that it's unoptomized? Many of these compilers include built-in optimization code... perhaps that's the difference.

Thanks for clearing that up, I knew something was fishy.

Congrats to the Gaim development team! I'm a programmer myself, and I can tell you (if you don't know from personal experience), it's hard as hell to make such a great product and nurture it to the 1.0 release!
Thanks for making a great product, gaim-team, and I'll continue to use it!

  7. How about a laptop? on Energy Efficient and Cheap Servers for Home Use? · · Score: 1

I have a home network, and wanted to get a server up but didn't have very much space. Since my server won't get slashdotted any time soon (it's not a web server; just sshd, ftpd and IMAP/SMTP), I decided to use the smallest reasonable server I could find: my IBM Thinkpad.
Yes, it's true: I'm running Debian on my Thinkpad connected to my cable line, and I couldn't be happier. Fast connection, and the computer is definitely fast enough for a server. Talk about mobile servers, eh?

  8. Re:Good and bad on Symantec Acquires @Stake · · Score: 2, Insightful

You seem to think that they are doing this with integrity in mind. Although I agree that @Stake is a good, integrity-filled organization (at the moment, anyway), but that doesn't necessarily have to change with Symantec taking them over. Also, remember that they aren't doing this for fame, honor, anything; they're doing this for money.

  9. And what happens when the liscence expires? on Does Shareware X-Chat for Windows Violate the GPL? · · Score: 1, Informative

Not that I encourage violating shareware agreements, but... ... since 30 days haven't passed since this is invoked, no one really knows what's going to happen at the end of the trial period! Perhaps there will be a small blinkenlight saying "this is a trial", maybe nothing at all. However, what would happen to future versions? I really like X-Chat, but I might have to move to the unofficial build...

I'm totally against laser eye surgery. My father had it, and they messed up. He got infected, and, to make a long story short, he had to go through SIX different eye surgeries and now has to wear contacts to see. Doesn't sound too great.

  13. Unfortunately, yes on Software Monoculture in Schools? · · Score: 0

Yes, that seems to be the case at my school, as well. We moved from strictly Macs (running MacOS 8 then MacOS 9), to only PCs (running Windows 2000, but switching to XP Pro)- except for four G5s in our journalism office. Odd, and unfortunate- however, I prefer PCs to Apples, so I don't mind THAT much...

  15. It's true! on Gates: Open Source Kills Jobs · · Score: 0

Well, as much as we may hate it, I can confidently say that although as a programmer I'm a firm believer in open source, it _DOES NOT_ allow intellectual property. It's a problem when I'm working at the university.

  17. I don't see the difference on Cell Phone Ringtones Give Music Industry Another Headache · · Score: 0

I honestly don't see how this makes such a huge difference- most mobile phone providers (Verizon, Cingular, AT&T Wireless, TMobile) have free downloadable ringtones- the annoyance is already here! The *real* cool cell phone ring tone is one my friend has- the classic female computer voice sings his name... "Josh, Josh... Joosshhh". It's pretty cool :) - CD

  18. Re:So says God! on Linus Torvalds: Backporting Is A Good Thing · · Score: 0

The main point that I was making was that Linus is just another OS guy on this issue. The reason I disagree with him is because although Open Source, by definition, is meant to be modified and used freely, to change things too much takes away standard. The Operating System wars are raging as it is, and instability amongst Linux could destroy it's fighting chance. But that's just me, right?

  19. So says God! on Linus Torvalds: Backporting Is A Good Thing · · Score: 1, Insightful

Well, we all know that Linus is God, and whatever he says goes... right? Well, perhaps not. Although I definitely appreciate his programming skills, and the wonderful donation to society that we know as Linux, I don't think that I agree with him on this issue. Blasphemy?

  20. But Waiters Earn A Lot on Reasonable Salary for Entry Level Programmers? · · Score: 1

  21. I'm still gonna do it! on U.S. Students Shun Computer Science, Engineering · · Score: 1

Well, as many others have said- I'm still going to major in computer science when I go to college. I love programming, and to be honest, I think that outsourcing just weeds out the people that don't really have a passion for computer science- those that if hired may take jobs away, but don't really "deserve" to have those jobs. Just my opinion, but I think that that's the way it is.
