    It's an illusion to think that, if granted, then things will stay as intended.

    Take the cable business as an example. They were bitching for years that it was not "cost" viable to have two competitors in each market as originally required when the industry got started. In "exchange" for relaxation of this they stated and promised at the Congressional hearings that prices would not go up. (Siting a lot of "market" reasons, incl competition from phone lines. Go figure) What happened? Within one years, one year, most markets had seen close to a doubling of prices.

    Thanks for your reply, I know however as I have worked in the semiconductor industry for 15 years.

    The point I am making is that the price is way too high in small quantities. We are getting a bit off topic, but how much do you pay per processor? The embeddded parts should cost around $4+- based on performance / complexity / die size using Texas Instruments DSP as a yard stick. What do you pay?

    This is actually quite good as this will force Sony to put a lot of money into seeding/ development support for smaller players and start-ups.

    This could be the spark of some real creativity as a slew of ideas gets to be tried.

    A game franchise is only a franchise for so long. We need new franchises. There is 50Mu PS2's out there vs 8.3Mu for Xbox.

    This means that new idea can make money with a low penetration PS2, something that is not possible for Xbox. Say, 1% equates to half a million titles sold for the Sony camp or 80K for MS. Where would you put your bet?

    Bluetooth needs to be built in rather than provided by a card

    It's is too expensive to do this now. At $5-$6 for the chip currently plus the space taken up makes this prohibitive. Second the Bluetooth penetration is very small currently. The solution will be the Multifunction cards like the ones announced by Sandisk. They combine I/O like Wi-Fi or later BT on the CF card with Flash memory. That way you get the machine out now at a reasonable price point and secure later connectivity at much better price later.

    IBM Semiconductor has no concept of supporting smaller volume makers, and the Bill of Material for this reference design will be more than $300.

    Just look at the POP reference design they made a few years back. Nobody I mean Nobody ever produced a single board. The fact that they used a virtual non existant Northbridge didn't help.

    Nothing to see here Move On, or call IBM and try and get a quote for 500 pcs PowerPC if you doubt me.

    Excellent post totally agree. One thing you left out pertinent to SUV's and likely Segways. They transfer the "Risk of getting hurt in traffic" to others with impunity in addition to increasing the total risk.

    Here in Texas we have had to live with Trash in Pickups for quite a while, now SUV's. Only good thing is that nobody walks in Texas so no market for Segways and most are too obese to use them anyway.

    why is there no bluetooth? Why can't somebody just get the spec right?

    Why don't you apply for a job there, I am sure it's just an oversight, in their engineering dept. They were probably not aware of bluetooth. You should be able to straighten this out quickly.

    While we are at it why not add WiFi (seems to be popular)and a 100gig harddrive, probably just a faux pas that you can fix as well.

    Small wonder most office workers hate system admins if that is the general attitude.

    Granted it's not the Information workers computer in the sense of ownership, but the Environment belongs to him/her.

    Being comfortable with your machine makes you more productive. Remember that your time is at the low end of the scale compared to most of the information workers you are employed to serve.

    You are dead wrong. Windows skills is seen as a given. Stating that you know how to use Word is like enclosing your 200 yard swimming certificate, or stating that you know how to ride a bike.

    Stating linux skills and alternative applications is a good way to show that you can think for yourselves and at least for now makes you stand out.

    That being said there is a lot of good reasons to expose students to alternative user interfaces and application programs. For one they will get to understand that there is a choice, as well as trade off's like everywhere else in this world.

    Using your analogy we should skip foreign language altogether in the US. Who need Spanish anyway.

    I agree with you but think we need to do more. This thing has to turn on its head, and put the burden on providing drivers and information back on the vendors.

    Just like vendors are lining up and doing whatever needed to be able to put a "Windows" sticker on the box they should be told a set of requirements for them to use the word Linux on their product. Linus owns the trademark and maybe he can be talked into making a one page "rulebook". No compliance with Rulebook no Linux on product.

    Problem solved.

    There is a few comments urging for donations at this juncture.

    This might be a mistake. If you donate now the money might go into the distribution fund available to the creditors. Please email Mandrake (I did) asking them to set up a separate untouchable account that only becomes available once the appointed Judge has approved the bankrupcy distribution and reorganization plan.

    The fund should be earmarked for development as well.

    Did you read anything other than scan the headlines?

    There is a CONTRACT between MS and Sun relating to Java. They are under contractual obligation to include Jave, The judge ruled in favor of Sun regarding interpretation of this contract. To the extend there is a contract between MS and any other competitor they can do likewise. IE file suit and hope for a favorable ruling.

    The ruling is based on the agreement MS and Sun made under which MS initially licenced Java. Nothing to do with "Look and Feel" of anything.

    Here is a quick translation. Note that UNI-C stands for University of Copenhagen, I think.

    An agreement between silicon Valley based Sun Microsystems and UNI-C has resulted in a free available download of office suite 6.0 for all school pupils, teaches and students in general.

    Alternatively they can buy the program at cost , 10kr per unit. Schools can buy them in quantities of 50.

    Sun has made and agreement with UNI-C following the guidelines, that Secretary of Education Ulla Tørnæs (Liberal Party) published on October 30'th, for how educational institutions heeds to act when offered free office suites. One of the requirement is that like offerings impose no cost on the government and the UNI-C IT-Center for research and Education handles the distribution.     Not really. The term was defined by Clayton Christensen from Harvard University. It has to do with technologies that initially is inferior to what the market "needs" but improves at a rate faster than that market. Eventually making it the dominant technology displacing what was there before. He uses disk drives as example. The book Innovators Dilemma is worth a read.
