What I really wanted to say was Sony has decided to release the PS2 Linux kit in Europe. Sign up Linux Play
Looks like Sony is covering all their based. Look at the deal they just made with IBM about Setbox technology that I am sure will find its way into PS3 related stuff.
Where have you been lately. Sdram has gone up from $1.3/chip at the low point to around $2.5 Now. Slightly above $2 is the break-even point for the manufacturers. Even Hynix made a bit of money last quarter. Cost of RAM for Xbox has increased $5 or so from launch. That is a problem. If you have followed the debate on cost then you will know that the cost of the Eternet connection is around $5. That might not seem to you like much but MS has publicly stated that they expected Broadband to be ubiquituous by now when they made the decision to include the connection. They have said that had they known the slow uptake of broadband the $5 extra cost would not have been designed in. This just to put the DRAM issue in perspective.
I wonder what incentives Microsoft is using to try and achieve this. It is not in the self interest of any company in the security business to limit the perception in the market place of need for security.
If you notice the likes of Symantec etc goes out of their way to publish information of various virii.
I bet the Carrot is that MS will NOT enter that business if they play ball. If not "Embraze and extend"
Why did MS pick Madnick as their witness then? I think its because they cold present him as a CS professor and yet knew about his lack of technical insight. That way they could prime him without his awareness of being manipulated. Hope the Judge sees through that.
Good point but there is a slight difference. Slashdot is using resources in their end to support you when you access their site. That is not the case for Turner. There is no delta cost imposed on Turner by your behaviour.
If skipping advertising is theft we are in good company. Advertising is mostly lies about products. If they stopped lying maybe we would start watching.
Second theft is removal of something from someone, at best this is breach of an implicit contract.
Wish the Turner CEO had said what he said in the UK as he and his company could have been sued for defamation.
My point was the story had to be accepted on Faith, despite its ridiculous content, not the age per se. I find the people that committed suicide here a few years ago to meet their maker on the Hale Bob comet silly as well.
And no we should not throw away the ancient Greek attempt of rationality. They didn't claim to have found the Truth (it was only later that the church anointed Aristotle) they were indeed struggeling to formulate an approcah to reason. It was lacking, but they were among the first that ever contemplated that kind of meta questions.
You point about Roman Government has nothing to do with this debate, as it covers different subject matter.
Well said. On one hand we try to teach our children that its important to exercise critical thinking. Then parents / teachers etc. turn around an claim silly stories written by ignorant men 2K or 1.4K years ago should be believed on Faith.
What crock.
In the 20th century, atheist regimes murdered well over 100 million people. Far, far more than had ever been killed by non-atheist regimes.
This reasoning is flawed. There is no link between the fact that USSR/ Cambodia etc. were Atheist and the fact so many got killed. There is no causality.
Maybe we should send a copy of this to the demented Judge Stephen Limbaugh (Brother of the Big Fat Idiot) that ruled that games were not Speech and found "no conveyance of ideas, expression, or anything else that could possibly amount to speech" in the games.
Why is the Console "Network effect" never mentioned. Has anyone ever seen something on the local geographical distribution of console sales. Local, like by city or smaller geographical units.
Most gamers buy the same console as their friends so they can share games. This would make the incumbent almost impossible to dislodge and might be the "real" reason the market can't sustain 3 consoles. Dreamcast had lots of good games but I think the "Network effect" killed it, little else.
This would mean that Japan for sure is dead for Xbox (see sales data below), Europe will depend on the GC early succes. The GC addresses a slightly younger audience so they are to a lesser degree taking on PS2 head-on.
Sales of Consoles in Japan early April. Third week sales is out but I couldn't find it)
Quote
Sales tracking firm Media Create reports that in the first week of April (4/1 - 4/7), Microsoft sold an abysmal 2,179 units, a number that in and of itself is astonishingly low for a newly-released console system. But when you examine sales of some of the other hardware on the market, the news gets even worse. In the same week in April, Sony's seven-year old PS one platform sold 3,959 units. And get this--Sega's discontinued Dreamcast console even managed to outsell the Xbox with 3,427 units purchased by Japanese gamers. As for the other next-generation platforms, the PS2 and the GameCube sold 80,734 units and 15,06 8 units respectively.
I am not quite sure how this squares with the story about PS2 games being used to teach children how to read. Why would the material used in schools not be Free-Speech? It might be simplistic and naive but content none the less.
Maybe we can get the NASA SciFi guy from yesterday to propose a 1% tax on books to educate judges.
Is there any doubt that that 1% tax on Scientology books would be ruled unconstitutional? Then by the same token the SciFI tax would not fly (Bad pun sorry)
The Drift your are probably? talking about is called
Selective Availability and we remove in May 2000, by President Clinton. The is an margin of error though that works out to as much as 70M. Nore detail here
Selling below cost might not be such a smart move by Microsoft. The EU is currently investigating what to do on AntiTrust. The EU has fairly effective dumping remedies, that has been enforced quickly. The KOrean Memory manufacturers had to face this a few times. The Xbox is made in Hungary and Mexico that could face retaliatory responses in addition to MS fines.
It's a shame you have to include a little note like "this is supposed to be funny" or include a tag to avoid OffTopic moderation.
What idiot moderated this OffTopic?
I meant the physical nature of books. ie the paper. Gutenberg, ebooks etc are fine but you do not need any special DB to get to it. As an example take a string of text 6-10 words from Hamlet and put into Google. Sling and arrows of outrageous and entry number 6 is Hamlet. Same with most books on the net.
I have come to the conclusion that there is not a well developed internet book database.
Why do we need this? Books are not searchable by nature so making it easier to find information about a book still leaves the issue of how do we get access to it. Making an eBook DB makes some sense. The ISBN numbering has been in effect for a long time and you can find any book reference that has a write up or reference on the net via Google. Thirdly the research community has oddles of system for referencing articles and papers.
This was just released. During Cross he admitted asking for favour on Hammer plus he has not read the States proposal relaying on Gates words.
Quote
Jerry Sanders, chief executive of computer chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD.N , also conceded he had not read the states' proposed sanctions, but that Gates had told him they were "crazy" and would fragment the Windows operating system.
Howard Gutman, an attorney for the states, told U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly that Sanders asked Microsoft to announce support for its chip technology, codenamed Hammer, ahead of a competing product just being developed at Intel Corp. INTC.O
"Mr. Gates said he would talk to his people about that," Gutman said of the Feb. 8 call by Gates to Sanders.
"Yes," agreed Sanders. "I asked Mr. Gates to hold Intel to the same standard he held us to."
Sanders' testimony was Microsoft's opening response to more than four weeks of witnesses testifying for the states, who are seeking stiffer sanctions against Microsoft for illegally maintaining its Windows monopoly.
The exchange was reminiscent of efforts by Microsoft lawyers to discredit the motives of industry executives testifying on behalf of the nine states that have rejected a proposed settlement of the case.
"You've never checked to this day whether what Mr. Gates told you... was true in the remedies," Gutman challenged. Sanders agreed he had not read the states' proposals.
Unfortunately, I doubt the court will be fully informed about the benefits that accrue to AMD as a result of Sanders testifying for MS
He is testifying so the 9 states gets to cross examine. They will surely ask questions about AMD's relationship with MS. The point of cross examination is often just to put the credibility of the witness is doubt. Second its an MS wittness Sanders starts with a bias in the mind of the judge, just as the RedHat guy has a bias the other way in the Judge's mind.
I read thru all the post and it amazes me that nobody (Maybe I missed it) has picked up on the fact its Time Warner. This is as much an attempt to protect their Music and Film biz as its a "cost of bandwidth" issue. We are just about now getting to the point where its somewhat practical to download DivX movies in addition to Mp3 music. If they can cap the bandwidth at this point they have bought themselves a few years to try and figure out how to avoid movies going the route of music.

One word: Subliminal
"assuming that RAM continues to tumble"

There is no causality to support that ANY religion is inherently "bad".
I was just trying to make that very point, but for "atheism".
I do have an opinion on organized religion (Fairly bad) but that is just that: An Opinion
