This reminds me of the Domino Theory as the USA applied it to SE Asia in the 1960's, as the main excuse to go into Vietnam.

If you remember Vietnam fell and the rest of South East Asia must surely be communist by now if the Domino Theory has merit, NOT.

I hope that a success in one country for Open Source will affect others to try something along same lines, but you picked a bad example.

because Peru simply would not have bought it.

That is why I stated it like "would otherwise have bought". I am not making a comment on the merit of this nor on what they would or wouldn't buy. I was just trying to make the point that even thought something is free in the sense it has miniscule production cost it does not mean that giving it away does not cost you anything.

Your point is well taken that if they would not have bought anything the cost to MS is indeed close to zero.

If we subtract the 'free' software total from that sum, how much is Microsoft actually contributing? $5?

This is not quite true. As a minimum they are "contributing" the income they would otherwise have had. Over time your are right they will gain by doing what they are doing so "cost" is close to zero (that the reason for doing it) but in the short term like next two years this will lower their profit by the above said amount.

I hope they do that but there is a licensing issue with MicroSoft. So far the have stated that if the hyperthreading is turned on you need a license for 2 cpu's. Maybe they will waver this on consumer versions of the XP, maybe not.

Linux has added to the rift between MS and Intel and they are currently best buddies with AMD. I think MS is doing this as much as a blocking maneuver against Linux on Opteron. AMD can not initially penetrate the high end but their aim is squarely where Linux is strong.

Sun is rumoured to be very active behind the scene on Opteron as a possible key component in the Cobalt overhaul.

If they try to do this the logical counter move is to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization stating the case that the Regional Settings is a deliberate and unlawful inpediment to free trade. The risk of this being declared illegal combined with suits for Punitive damages subsequently filed in the US courts is high.
