  1. Write down my password? on Montana City Requires Workers' Internet Accounts · · Score: 2, Interesting

Heck, I'd have trouble *writing* some of my passwords. My really complex ones are purely by finger/type memory.

I think that there are more indirect behaviors that go into determining if a message is spam or not (given a filter misses it and it gets to your inbox). First and foremost, do I know the sender? That's a big variable that that quiz cannot reproduce or take into account - so of course people will have a tough time determining if a message is spam or ham. Second is the presence of attachments. If I know the sender, and the message isn't something like "check out this great video!", I'll be pretty sure it's ham.

That quiz is great for the basics and the practice of looking at headers, but I feel it misses the most fundamental aspect of knowing the sender and letting your brain do the work that filters miss.

Disappointing, yes, but this is what makes excellence in software. They recognized the problems, realized the time it would take to fix, and decided on a "better safe than sorry" approach. This will make the eventual release of "places" that much better!

  9. Good riddance on Security Vendor McAfee to Pay $50 Million Fine · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've been disgusted with McAfee for a while, but I finally had enough when my parents got a new Dell recently (which ships with McAfee for some configurations).

I installed Firefox and made it the default browser. Then I tried to configure some of the advanced McAfee antivirus options. First, I couldn't even open the interface because McAfee must use IE (with ActiveX) to produce the GUI. Since Firefox was set as default, McAfee just spun and spun fruitlessly until I realized what was happening.

Then, my last name has an apostrophe in it. Alas, McAfee cannot launch the AV scheduler if your logged in user name (on XP Home) contains an apostrophe. That took a LONG time with a McAfee tech to figure out.

Never again. Crappy software for a crappier company.

Ah, remember when the release of a Netscape mattered?

It still does, especially if you're a fed. Many gov't agencies still use Netscape, and will make use of this new release simply because they're all still stuck in the 90's. I don't know firsthand, but I'd be willing to bet Firefox didn't get much attention from the government. Most feds only know "IE" and "Netscape."
