  1. No news on Nokia? on Interview with Sebastian Kuegler, KDE Developer · · Score: 1

Really, what happened to Slashdot. I'm surprised there hasn't been any mention of Nokia buying Trolltech. Pretty big news, I think. http://dot.kde.org/1201517986/ Maybe it's been posted, but I haven't seen it.

On the Ubuntu forums, there is a post with a fonts.conf for freetype that sets the fonts exactly the same as on Windows regarding the aliasing.

I'm on a CRT here and I can't stand the small fuzzy fonts that all linux distros default to these days, and setting anti-alias min/max isn't enough, it was still pretty bad, although it helped.

Search the forums, you won't regret it.

    uhmm, no...

Point 1: The AIW's TV capture is not better, they are the same, at least they were the last time I looked into these things. Owning both a AIW 7000 and a TV Wonder PCI, I've seen the both myself.

Point 2: Hauppauge makes a better card, this is true, as it includes hardware mpeg support. But this isnt about the Hauppauge, this is about the AIW vrs the TV Wonder.

Point 3: Ever try getting a AIW to work in Linux? Good luck, go over to the Gatos page and see the pain that AIW's are in linux. The TV wonder and the Hauppauge cards are a breeze to setup, insert the driver module and you're good to go.

So basicly you are paying for a capture card that will be useless when you upgrade your video card, as opposed to buying a tuner card separately and it lasting as long as you own your computer. My tuner has gone from a orignal pentium board all the way to my barton.

There is no good reason to get an AIW unless you can't afford to spare an extra pci slot.

I can't believe posts like this get modded up... no offense :)

Why don't local affiliates brand the tv shows with their commericals and logo, and let people download them off their website.

That way local commericals are shown that matter to the advertisers in addition to the national ads.

Sure you could download an episode from another affiliate, but if you have one in your city, it would probably be faster download so why bother.

People who don't have an affiliate that airs said show can also watch it, but I'd hardly consider that a loss since your gaining a viewer who wouldn't be able to watch it in the first place.

    Forgive my ignorance but...

What exactly is the issue? Is it a lack of support, or existing bugs that make it unusable?

Situations like this make me think that it'd be nice if there was some sort of compatiblity goal so that drivers could be somewhat crossplatform, or at least easily ported acrosss the various unix's via some sort of shared api or something.

I'm sure there are 101 reasons why this isn't possible, but it's nice to dream :)

The same could be said for Linux when it was in its infancy.

I commend the group working on ReactOS for the job they've done so far. Unlike others, they seem to be progessing nicely and arent stuck in the limbo between design and coding which so many projects seem to suffer from these days.

Theres a growing amount of users who have older hardware that struggles on 2k, XP and will struggle even more so with Longhorn. If ReactOS can provide a relatively stable Windows compatable environment, IMO they will make serious inroads.

Personaly, I've got the Ati Tv Wonder. Worked perfectly under linux for years now, and can be found dirt cheep , about 80 dollars cdn. Note that the VE version is mono only, no stereo.

Ati's drivers for 2k,xp have been terrible for a long time for the tv wonder. If you weren't using an ati display adapter, you were sool. There was a bug in their multimedia center that made it impossible to use on nvidia based cards. They finally fixed that, and now everything seems to be great with their drives.
