here's my question....
why are we wasting time making useless and unconstitutional bans on firearms, when the real problem isnt the tools, its the people using them? what will you do to fight urban gang violence? How do you feel the problem of urban violence relates to education(or the lack thereof) and drug abuse? Do you feel that the prohibition of soft drugs like marijuana and ecstacy have been worth the immense problem of violence and disease associated with the resultant illegal drug trade?
basically, when will either of you get a clue and treat the cause rather than the symptoms??
Ive been using irrlicht for nearly a year now, and it is definitely the easiest to use 3d engine i've ever worked with. I have also tried many versions of ogre, crystal space, neoengine, and even purple#. i love working with irrlicht, and as many have mentioned, what it needs most is a fully featured game engine built with it, so that precisely what i'm trying to do(in my limited free time....) many other people are doing this also, but there is some disagreement in the irrlicht community about whether to start adding features like sound, ai physics etc to irrlicht...or to keep it a pure 3d-only engine. anybody who likes irrlicht, should definitely contribute to irrlichtNX, because from 0.7 on, niko will be using CVS(prolly irrlichtNX's CVS) along with the rest of us. good things happening on the horizon for Irrlicht:-)
still a myth.
you can't go and make a huge generalized statement like that and EVER find enough proof to back it up. it's like saying all apples are delicious...well yknow, some go rotten!! both the commercial and OSS camps have their solid secure apps, and their black sheep. OSS has the solid and legendary OpenBSD, M$ has windows win2k(which really aint bad altogether). OSS has the nasty and buggy sendmail, M$ has exchange server(yuck!!). The most secure apps are those that were designed with security in mind from the beginning, like vsftp, OpenBSD, etc...
oh yes, of course, it's all a conspiracy...uh-huh.
yeh and al gore really IS a robot, kennedy was killed by aliens, and atlantis is at the bottom of my swimming pool....
yknow, maybe some things really are what they appear to be, the SCO suits got hackers upset because SCO was pissing on OSS, and the war got some hacker upset because probably some of their friends who were in the service were injured or killed. Yeh war sucks, but there is never any excuse to sink to the level of DDOS attacks, and the republicans have just as much of a right to have their message out there as the democrats.
if you don't like what bush is doing, then vote for kerry, but DDOSing websites is retarded.
for my part, at least bush knows what the hell he stands for, i'll be voting for 4 more years of W.
If microsoft wants my advice, i'd say the one place they should look is Itanium. By not running the old 32-bit apps they alienated their customers and broke compatibility. AMD comes out years later with a dual mode chip that does both, and now intel look like fools, when they INVENTED the damn x86 architecture in the first place.
breaking compatibility alienates your current customers, and they are by far the ones most likely to buy your new stuff. If they break compatibility they better have a game as ground-breaking as Halo to be a system-seller for the xbox2 or they will lose the whole market to the PS3. Microsoft is clearly becoming soft and complacent from being too used to their desktop monopoly if they think they can get away with just doing whatever they please in the gaming market.
oh its not the shitty software's fault, its those terrorist security researchers!!!
yeh right, i dont believe that, its just a bunch of FUD and nonsense. fact is, somebody would find them eventually, and if its a reputable researcher who finds it at least network/sysadmins like me have a potential heads-up before the first exploits hit. what we need is a combination of things
-longer QA process for OS and vital
system software
-faster developement and notification about patches
-a set of established secure coding practices wouldnt hurt(sorta like SELinux+select setup options like encrypted disks and firewalls)
I think the earlier poster had it right that the whole science of computing is still very young, and these sorts of race conditions and reliability/stability problem should be expected at this point, but for us to have any expectation of improvement we mustestablish procedures for handling these sort of things that allow us to continue to improve stuff long-term, rather than always getting eaten up by the short term problems.
just an opinion, but i think this makes sense.
this is the most blatantly obvious violation of privacy i have ever heard of. if they combine this with that face recognition crap (which you know they will) they can effectively track every US citizen at all times. this is total bullcrap. im sorry, but i just don't trust that this will be used just for terrorism. i hope that after an extended spat of these "retired police officers and college students" peering through bedroom windows that this BS will get the smack-down it deserves.
the worst part is it's being paid for by my taxes. what a freaking waste of money.
Maybe i should just wear a hoodie from now on.....
eh so they run m$ ads. big whoop. i hate ms as much as anybody but still everybody should have equal opputunity to buy ad space. thats all it is, now if linuxtoday was its own company, and microshaft bought a controlling share of their stock, then id worry. much like when msnbc reports about the microsoft antitrust case, you cant help but wonder if that influenced their reporting a little, even with the disclaimer admitting they are owned by m$....
id worry more about stuff like google's IPO, i mean that just a prime oppurtunity for MS to do what they do best, buy out the competition.
With all the flashy lights and neon and windows and stuff (some of which i admit looks pretty spiffy) i think it's more a matter of people being artistic or maybe just trying to draw attention to themselves. kinda like those guys and hot-rod up their honda with 400 lbs of bondo and orange paint.
Personally, i've had the same experience as you guys. all I have is a celeron 2.2ghz and a lasst-gen gf4, but ut2004 and even Far Cry work great on it. Even though its running dog-slow winXP pro and running 2 different p2p apps in the background at all times. I run UT 2004 at 1280x1024, and far cry at 1152x864 and both get 40+ fps.
I read lots of gaming mags and they commonly review machines costing as much as 6000$$ but honestly with all hardware that is at LEAST a year old and was old hat even when bought, there's nary a game i can't run. At LAN parties i've been to, you'll see guys with dingy beige p3's and they will STILL hand you your a$$ at counterstrike. Games are about skill mostly, and in the case of internet games, partially about your bandwidth. So if you really wanna rule, scratch the alienware, and go for the DSL/Cablemodem.
that and practice;-)
the.u3d file extension is already used for a proprietary format for a neat little app called uinwrap3d, which a lot of modders use to make skins for custom game models. prolly no big deal but i just thought that was mildly relavent maybe not...
i dunno if you guys remember this, but i had read before that there are rfid tags in cash. like 20$ or larger denominations right under jackson's eye. so they can tell within a reasonable level of accuracy how much money you have on ya too
could be a great tool for muggers, but i cant imagine why else this was done. its never gonna stop until somebody puts their foot down and says "ok this has nothing to do with terrorism or national security, this is just about control isn't it??". its always about control, about power, the power to control your destiny and the people who can influence it. like they would says at 2600 knowledge is power. so remove that remote-disble bit from your car, pack your guns at all times, and get ready for the apocalypse.
what else can you do eh? its depressing, but true, there is no land of tolerance... raise your hand if you think its time for a revolution.....it makes you a quicker target;-)
btw, for those of ya that would wanna flame, this was sarcasm;-)
my user complain endlessly when an outlook message takes more than 5 seconds to open, they would lynch us if we used this. that and we send to much email between here and our factories/customers/contrators that if we had to pay for each message, even a penny, it would quickly put us out of business. paying anything for email is a terrible idea that i sincerely hope will never see the light of day, especially if it's micro$haft that would be to benefit....
we need a LEGAL solution to spam. just make the fbi track these spammers down as they do with hackers, and the problem would slowly go away. people need to be rational here....
-Ted
well, we should encourage the ten times better way then yknow? the ipod wasnt the first mp3 player, but it outshined others so well that it became the best-selling. as far as having upgradable firmware, well thats great, but it should be well tested, i would be ashamed to ship a product that wasnt "1.0", that is, all advertised features work, and it has exhibited acceptable stability. i think the damage to your company's reputation would be more damaging than missing the ideal time to market...
dude, wtf does this have to do with anything even remotely relating to this post??
and in any case, when you have a windows 200 machine or an NT box with 185 days uptime lemme know. cuz i have 3 linux servers here at work with that or better. if it weren't for power failures it would be a year.
linux is i agree FAR less stable than commercial UNIX, like solaris. but once it's set up(as with unix) it requires little if ANY maintenence.
what i think people miss is that linux is best suited as a server OS, most distributions aren't designed for desktop users or games or whatever it is trolls like you do all day.
get a girlfriend...
moderators: i recommend you do some serious cleaning in this forum, its full of trolls!!
actually, it is a well-documented fact that while on average men are superior in the areas of simple strength, and aggressive competitive behavior comes more easily to men than women, women have significantly faster reaction time, better accuracy, and the ability to track more targets at one time. this was discovered specifically relating to women being fighter pilots, but i'd bet it's valid for twitch games too. what holds most women back is that they lack confidence and are not aggressive enough. that and they are scared that people will think they are a "bitch" if they act aggressive.
it's sad that society beats that sort of thing into them...
i'll tell ya this, my fiance hands me my ass at tekken...
yeh i get the point...i suck...move on...
once again with the IANAL either...
i was trying to make a point that it sucks the we have to protect ourselves from our own generousity.....
i wasnt saying i hated the gpl or anything, i was saying i wish we didnt need it....
-ted
well that's depressing. so what are you saying, that we have to all speak lawyer if we wanna write open source code, and should watch our back at all times? maybe this is a bad time to try and talk about the "spirit" of the law, not the "letter".
ok, so maybe my idea is crap, but wouldnt it be NICE if that was all we had to say for people to respect each other's rights?
that was my original point, i wasnt trying to suggest that all the lawyers who worked on the gpl and so forth were idiots, i was saying, "wouldn't it be nice" if we didnt have to be so specific, if we could trust each other for once. there are too many people in the USA who are out to do nothing other than screw over their fellow citizens, its pointless, its stupid, and it inhibits our progress to have laws like this that have to be taken literally and be absolute like this.
but the first time i write something GPL'd, and then get sued when microsoft tries to patet MY work, ill prolly thank the FSF for writing the GPL so strong like they did.
no matter how hard the world tries, i refuse to give up my altruism and the basic belief that people are innately good.
yeh maybe that makes me ignorant..
but i dont give a hoot....
-ted
ever try to really READ the GPL??(or the apache license for that matter...) its a wonderful piece of work, but hot damn is it ever complex, and full of lawyer-speak. for my own projects, i have taken to using license based off the zlib license. its short, sweet, and so much easier to understand.
besides, i dont want to exclude commercial interest in my work, i just want to make it clear that it was ME who wrote it.
and by the way, several other versions of the apache license are listed as incompatible too.
honestly, i think this is a non-problem that people are making too big a deal about. we can still all use apache for free, for home AND business.
how bout this for an OS license:
this software is copyright (whoever) (whenever)
it may redistributed by any medium, provided:
-all changes are clearly labelled
-the original author(s) are credited as the creators of the original code.
-if this code is used as part of a commercial product, any modification of a source code file which was an original part of this software's source code must be made available under this license.
so then we can use it commercially, but actual changes or improvements to the given software ITself are still open source. but like if they use this as a part of a commercial product they only need to release the changes they made to this for their use, not their whole application.
welp, the suits thing was a joke really, i AM sorry if it hurt your feelings, i was just kiddin.
as for me thinking it was a scam, these days almost anything that arrives in the form of a mass mail, its not unfair to assume it's probably a scam. most im glad to know you arent trying to rip anybody off, but next time, you should definitely consider an alternate way of advertising yourselves, mas email wil NOT win you customers, especially from techies. i spend 8 hours a day (i'm a network admin in my day job) trying to deal with spam and viruses, and i've come to just downright HATE email as a form of cummunication, spam or not...
next time, maybe try either paid ads here on slashdot, or perhaps someplace that targets game developers, like maybe penny arcade, or PVP. i know i'd see it if it were on one of those sites.
i can see the business oppurtunity in what you are doing, selling the content rather than the game software. that way the code is free, but the model aren't like. however, i would be ADAMANTLY against doing any kind of DRM or digital signing or encryption on the content that would prevent people from being able to make mods or their own 3d models to use in the games.
it would suck to cut off the creative flow like that. as ID sorta did with q3, they can GPL the code, and simply state that the art content is their copyright. i know i personally do my best to respect their rights, and i have learned a LOT from their source code that was of great value in learning how i wanted to do Fmorg.
thanks for the clarification, and for not getting pissed at me for taking your email the wrong way.

i am the lead developer of an open source game,Fmorg and somehow these arena unlimited people got my emailaddress, and sent me THIS:
To whom it may concern:
You are invited to check out Arena Unlimited's new, free online service
for Open Source and independent game developers.
Our technology aims to allow developers to convert their virtual game
items into real commodities that can be bought, sold, and traded. Also,
we intend to enable developers and publishers to create, sell, and
manage dynamic advertising space, objects, sponsorships, and other content
within their games.
On Friday the 13th, we made available a preview release of our project
showing off some of our basic features. We want to give developers a
chance to check out what we're doing and evaluate the approach we're
taking to ensure usability in the upcoming production release.
Please visit the Developer's Corner
(http://arenaunlimited.com/site/dev/) to see what we offer. Comments,
questions, and suggestions are welcome and wanted.
Sincerely,
Dan Chow
CTO, Arena Unlimited, Inc.
P.S. You are receiving this invitation because you are a developer for
Open Source or independent game content. We're sorry about the mass
mailing, however this is the first, last and only e-mail we'll send you on
the subject if you don't want to sign up for the mailing list. We
believe in opt-in, not opt-out.Your address "_my_sf_email!_@users.sourceforge.net"
has been invited to join
the developers mailing list at mail.arenaunlimited.com by the
developers mailing list owner. You may accept the invitation by simply

as was reported on slashdot before, this virtual property thing is real big now, some kid sold his UO virtual property biz for like 10 million if i remember correctly. this sounds like a sort of scam to get us OO & indie game developers into some kinda contract on the off chance our game hits it big, and creates a demand for this crap.
my personal recommendation, JUST SAY NO TO SUITS!!
-Ted
the ONLY reason to port MSOffice instead of just use openoffice is because you have already written office macros or extensions in VB and don't wanna rewrite em. other than that, its a total waste of time, since OO.o is more stable anyway. i CAN see the attraction in this for some businesses, because they dont wanna re-do their stuff, but what we REALLY want, is a open source port of VB, and then integrate it into OO.o -ted
this is totally stupid. it seems like anybody who tries to do something really new and cool ends up with litigation against them. I'm trying to make a nice open source MMORPG, but what happens when i release it and it eats business from eversmack, will i get sued?? If i were Johansen i'd have never dreamed of publishing anything i wrote ever again, id be too scared! i admire his bravery in the face of all this unfounded legal BS!!
we had a similar problem with our helpdesk, and we created a quick and very effective in-house solution using Linux, Apache, Mysql, and PHP. the basic functionality is every request goes into the database, and the user submits a form to create these. an IT staff member sees the ticket, and if its in his area he/she claims it, and does what they can, notes in in the comments field, and if necessary passes it off to somebody else. we use this for basic helpdesk stuff, programming requests, all sorts of stuff and it gives us the flexibility to see what needs to be done and sort that data any way we need to.
here's my question....
why are we wasting time making useless and unconstitutional bans on firearms, when the real problem isnt the tools, its the people using them?
what will you do to fight urban gang violence?
How do you feel the problem of urban violence relates to education(or the lack thereof) and drug abuse?
Do you feel that the prohibition of soft drugs like marijuana and ecstacy have been worth the immense problem of violence and disease associated with the resultant illegal drug trade?

welp, the suits thing was a joke really, i AM sorry if it hurt your feelings, i was just kiddin. as for me thinking it was a scam, these days almost anything that arrives in the form of a mass mail, its not unfair to assume it's probably a scam. most im glad to know you arent trying to rip anybody off, but next time, you should definitely consider an alternate way of advertising yourselves, mas email wil NOT win you customers, especially from techies. i spend 8 hours a day (i'm a network admin in my day job) trying to deal with spam and viruses, and i've come to just downright HATE email as a form of cummunication, spam or not... next time, maybe try either paid ads here on slashdot, or perhaps someplace that targets game developers, like maybe penny arcade, or PVP. i know i'd see it if it were on one of those sites. i can see the business oppurtunity in what you are doing, selling the content rather than the game software. that way the code is free, but the model aren't like. however, i would be ADAMANTLY against doing any kind of DRM or digital signing or encryption on the content that would prevent people from being able to make mods or their own 3d models to use in the games. it would suck to cut off the creative flow like that. as ID sorta did with q3, they can GPL the code, and simply state that the art content is their copyright. i know i personally do my best to respect their rights, and i have learned a LOT from their source code that was of great value in learning how i wanted to do Fmorg. thanks for the clarification, and for not getting pissed at me for taking your email the wrong way. -ted
i am the lead developer of an open source game,Fmorg and somehow these arena unlimited people got my emailaddress, and sent me THIS:

We
believe in opt-in, not opt-out.Your address "_my_sf_email!_@users.sourceforge.net" has been invited to join

as was reported on slashdot before, this virtual property thing is real big now, some kid sold his UO virtual property biz for like 10 million if i remember correctly. this sounds like a sort of scam to get us OO & indie game developers into some kinda contract on the off chance our game hits it big, and creates a demand for this crap. my personal recommendation, JUST SAY NO TO SUITS!! -Ted
the ONLY reason to port MSOffice instead of just use openoffice is because you have already written office macros or extensions in VB and don't wanna rewrite em. other than that, its a total waste of time, since OO.o is more stable anyway. i CAN see the attraction in this for some businesses, because they dont wanna re-do their stuff, but what we REALLY want, is a open source port of VB, and then integrate it into OO.o
-ted
this is totally stupid. it seems like anybody who tries to do something really new and cool ends up with litigation against them. I'm trying to make a nice open source MMORPG, but what happens when i release it and it eats business from eversmack, will i get sued?? If i were Johansen i'd have never dreamed of publishing anything i wrote ever again, id be too scared! i admire his bravery in the face of all this unfounded legal BS!!
spyware!! there go ahead and sue me!
we had a similar problem with our helpdesk, and we created a quick and very effective in-house solution using Linux, Apache, Mysql, and PHP. the basic functionality is every request goes into the database, and the user submits a form to create these. an IT staff member sees the ticket, and if its in his area he/she claims it, and does what they can, notes in in the comments field, and if necessary passes it off to somebody else. we use this for basic helpdesk stuff, programming requests, all sorts of stuff and it gives us the flexibility to see what needs to be done and sort that data any way we need to.
