You guys must not use 3d video games. The drivers that come with sp2 SUCK for both ati and nvidia 3d support. Lets go over my exp for both my p4 machine and my AMD64 with windows. computer 1)P4 3ghz, i87p motherboard from intel, soundblaster audigy 2, nvidia 6800, onboard network card. Computer 2) AMD64 3500, DFI Nforce4 ultra-D motherobard, onboard nvidia sound, nvidia 6800GT video card, onboard network card. Install windows on computer one. Boots up, no sound, video limited to 1024x768, no network card. I need to install motherboard drivers from Intel CD, then reboot. Then I need to go out and download video drivers from nvidia and install, then reboot. Now change my res to 1600x1200. Then I have to use soundblaster CD to install drivers, then reboot, then go to soundblasters website, update drivers, then reboot. Then go to windows update, download updates, reboot. Now I need the multibutton mouse functions, go to MICROSOFTS website, download mouse drivers, install and reboot. Computer now works. But I'm not protected so I have to download antivir, install and reboot. Now i want to mount iso's, so I need to go download damontools, install and reboot. Now i'm good to use the system. But I dont have any apps, so I have to go install all those and possibly reboot. Install Windows on computer two. Boots up, no sound, no network, video limited. Install nforce4 drivers from motherboard disk., reboot. Now I have network support and sound. Now I follow all the other steps from computer one to get video, mouse, windows udpates, antivirus, etc. Linux on computer one. Insert ubuntu CD. Boots up, sound works, video is 2D only, but in right resolution (1600x1200). network works. Mouse only has 3 buttons that work. I open synaptic and find 3d drivers for nvidia. Click and then install, then I reboot. Now I have 3d support. I do some googling and find entry I need to add to fix mouse in my xorg.conf. I copy and paste it, then reboot and mouse works. I do not need a special app to mount isos, and I do not need antivirus. The exact same is done on computer number two. So in the long run, I have to reboot a lot less to get a working system. And its a lot less work for the install. What hardware did you have that all your things worked properly without downloading any drivers?

I personally have slowly switched to linux with gnome. The more I use gnome, the more I slowly try to make it look like OSX. I did all this without ever even using a mac. In the last year or more I have tried to use my windows partition, found it cumbersome to do what I needed/wanted to do and eventually removed the windows partitions. Then I got a job at a college and started using macs on occasion for testing purposes (we have macs for some classes and purposes). Now I'm seriously looking at buying a mac. This is from a guy who has NEVER bought a pre-built box. I have always built my own machines. Now i'm watching apple carefully to see how this intel thing pans out. I'm looking for my first laptop. I want a powerbook. I know that worst case, if I dont like MacOSX fulltime and it is an x86 processor that I should have no problem putting linux back on it. So there is very little risk in buying a x86 apple for me. There was much more risk when the had PPC processors because not all the programs I use in linux will compile on the PPC. Sure I'm only 1 guy, but if there are others like me it could be a decent market share. Apple has never had large market share to begin with, so if they can grab a few percent of another nitch marketshare they are doing good.

In reality, I dont really use any Qt. apps at all, so it seems like a waste of space to use kde if I dont use any kde apps. I perfer gaim to kopete, thunderbird to kmail, firefox to konq, etc. But I can see some advantages to kde, it was really easy to change its appearance, and it was snappy (although it felt a little less snappy then gnome.). I really liked the control panel and of course kio slaves are cool. But none of it was worth the time to switch full time to kde (which would require a rather large set of emerge).

Well, you normally dont read one chapter in a book. But you do listen to just one song. Just like I only read a few poems in a few of my poem books. In todays mass market media world no one is making albums as whole works of art. Its a room full of marketing execs deciding what to put where. So you normally only like a few songs, only a few songs are ever on the raido, and the album is usually just a way of filling up the disk to make an excuse for you to buy it. Its like taking a ok short story, and just adding new chapters on the end.
