i don't know, there really is a difference: you volunteer that information to the search engine and that info is logged, used to target ads to you and passed onto third parties via their web analytics provider. essentially every major commercial website does one or all of these things.
gmail would be parsing private emails that are sent to your email address and targeting ads to you based on the keywords it selects.
You also "volunteer" for this when you sign up for GMail. You already know they are going to do this, so if you sign up, you must be ok with it already. If you dont use gmail but need to send email to someone who uses gmail and you are concerned about privacy of your message, encrypt it.Or do what I do when I sign up for questionable sites. I create a temp email account (random hash @mydomian.com) and forward it to my in real address. If I start getting spam from it, I kill it. Its save and easy. Email is plain text, there is no privacy there, we need to get over this.
If google said they were going to sell your email address to spammers based on content so they could email you advertisements, that might be one thing. But again, the fact that they are telling you what they are going to do is 100% better then other sites out there that dont.
How about I work for NASA and make X number of $$ per year and can buy you stuff if you pleasure me.
Then give her a few hundred bucks to "buy you a drink".
Freedom has a price. With out a strong military, you cannot ensure its protection. But then again, what does a troll like you know about maintaining a world free of dictators and corruption? The dirty little secret is this. You MUST protect freedom for the better of mankind. Even...if it cost lives.
I agree very much, this is why i've decided to vote for mickey mouse this election. I can't stand either shitty political party in the white house. They are an affront to freedom.
STaying up to date with autoupdates is easy. Just have it sync your source tree, or grab the latest binaries, and auto-update (or provide simple dialog box asking if you want to update, then do all of the above). With the way that most distros keep most of their applications organized (gentoo's system, for example) this shouldn't be too hard to do.
Maybe this is the problem. Linux just needs catchy buzz words to describe how to do things. If I told my girlfriend to grab the latest binaries, she would laugh at me thinking its some new word for sex I just made up. Now maybe if we call it E-updaterXL 8.0 they will think its cool and learn how to use it. Although for automatic updates, I prefer a updater that will just download and install in the background and prompt the user to reboot when its done. Sucks for us power-users, but its great for my Girlfriend or my mom.
You also forgot that most "average" users need a cd to auto run and install programs for them. My mother was dumbfounded when I turned off autorun on her computer because it was annoying me. She was trying to install a game for my little niece and "the game wouldn't load". I drove out to discover that she didn't know to go into My Computer and open the CD rom and install.
Long story short, I had to turn back on autorun. Now if I could just get her to grasp how to uninstall programs. (She seems to have no difficulty using My Computer to delete program directorys instead of using add/remove programs.)
Linux needs a better managment system for adding and remove programs that is consitant in all distros. I still think this is a major drawback to adoption. I call it "just works" syndrom. This is what the end user wants. An OS on their dell that "just works". Get a new game from target, stick it in the cdrom drive and it "just works". Hell, you should of seen how mad one of my friends got that his new video game wouldnt work on his computer. He didnt even know to read system requirements (because he doesn't know whats in his system). The game requires DX9, but his video card doesnt' support DX9. He kept asking me over and over if "writting zeros to the drive and putting windows back" would fix the problem. Took me about 20 minutes to get him to understand why the game wouldn't work. If linux is going to target the averge user, this guy needs to be your beta tester.
Thanks for reading my drawn out tech support problems:-p
Yea, i've kept my eye on that for sometime. Most of the games I play though require punkbuster and I've read they have some trouble getting that to run properly. I have played some good native games on linux (nwn, ut2004, ut2003) and that is really want I want to see. The problem is how to convice developers that cross-platform means more then just xbox and windows.
You could always insert a message at the top of the email that says:
this is spam delete now and also filter your outgoing email with a blackhole list. Maybe even run your own legit opt out and filter down the amount of spam your sending.
Although personally, I wouldn't be caught dead sending spam no matter how much I could justify it. Maybe they should start a program paying me to receive their spam, and paying the ISP to waste their bandwith.
Call me when all the games on gamestop support mac/linux. Until then linux is just the firewall/router between me and the internet and the webserver to handle my domain. I dont think windows can touch linux as a small server. In the desktop market though, I dont care if its so sexy it causes instant orgasam. Until I can play games on it, there is no reason to switch. I dont want to mess around with wine to get games to run. Insert CD, double click setup, wait, swap cd, wait, swap cd, wait, swap cd, wait swap cd wait, bitch about dvd's not being standard yet, then play game. Thats what I want. I have editplus and context, thats good enough for my webscripting, and my work gives me a machine to program on.
I like linux a lot. I like how it runs as a server and I like the development and cost model. But until the gaming world embraces it, saying well they could use this isn't a good enough reason to switch. I'm not saying linux can/will/should support directX. I just think that is the biggest thing holding back linux. If it can game and is cheaper, the parents will buy. The children will learn, and market share will grow.
I maintain a code library. But its written very generic. I usually copy that code and use modify it to fit the project i'm working on. I dont see a problem with that because the code is technically different in each project and used in a different way. For example (this one is a little far fetched) Lets say I wrote a function to format a date. In 1 program I may use that function to only output as mm/dd/yyyy. In another program I may use that same function to only output mm/yy.
Its technically the same code, but I remove the the parts that are not used.
Besides, even if I didn't have the database. I will write a function to do something very close to the exact same way 90% of the time. Most of the developers I know have very reconizable styles. I can usually tell who on my team wrote what parts by the code alone.
Sorry for my spelling errors, I dont have time to spellcheck.
I think its Cuthulu. Only the dead but sleeping god would have the power to do this. Quickly look for the burning sword in the sky that annouces the end of the world and pray that Marduk comes with the secret word shape and number to save us. I have spoken with the 50 incarnations of Marduk and they tell me we have nothing to fear if we pray to Iniaana to save us.
what makes you think my religion, the religion of the oldest know civilized people is not right?
But if you have to go to the machine to get the message, you know the IP. And then you can know the ISP. And with that information, you can notify the ISP.
Now, in theory the ISP will get thousands of notifications for 1 ip or a range of IP's relating to 1 dial up number/section of their network. Hopefully, they would do something about it. Comcast has been kicking people off for being infected with some virus's. I wouldn't put it past other ISP's to step up the plate and disconnect these people when they can 100% verify the location of the spam with almost no work on their end.
Me personally, I use a custom solution. I first use a whitelist on my end that includes only the domains I expect to receive email from. Then I use a filter to stop any spam that may come from those domains (this prevents me from having to add each address from a domain.) Finally, whenever I send a email to a domain not on my whitelist, it gets added to the whitelist for 1 week. If I send more then 4 weeks of messages, it gets perminatly added.
I used to get a moderate amount of spam, 40-50 a week. Now I get none. Although, truth be told, I was down to 5 or less a week with just the filter.
I've only had one uninstall hose my machine. It was a demo for a game I downloaded. The game was called Chicago 1930. I played it and didn't enjoy it so I went into add/remove and uninstalled it. I then got up and went to get a drink and when I came back I seen removing C:\.
I quickly shut off my pc, but it was too late and I was unable to recover most of the deleted files, even with my undelete CD. I had to reformat and install windows (I had no clue what programs were missing or what was there and damage control was too much work.)
Lesson learned, they call it un-wise for a reason LOL
I would like to point out that I still have to go to nvidia's website and download and install their drivers after installing windows. The drivers that come with windows just do not work for 3d games.
I guess i'm just smarter then everyone. I was able to figure out that when they told me in school that smoking caused cancer that it did. Or when they taught me about the food groups and that you need to exercise and eat right to stay in shape, that they were not just trying to waste my time. As for mcdonalds, its freakin coffee, are you saying the industry standard for coffee would not burn you, and are you also saying that lady wouldn't of sued even if it was a minor burn at the correct temp? If so I'll take that one back.
The point is, people need to take responsiblity into their own hands instead of whining about it. If people dont use google's service, they will be forced to change thier policys. Do you think if everyone suddenly switched to linux microsoft wouldn't change the way it does buisness to compete? Or would they just die?
I'm just sick of all the people who think if they whine enough the whole world will change. There is only one way to vote, with your buisness. If you dont give them your buisness, you arn't effected by their policys. IF enough people dont give them their buisness, they will change their policys.
I call it evolution. If you are too stupid to read what you are getting into, you deserve what you get. That is the biggest problem with the US today. Everything thinks they are entitled to be a freakin moron. "How was i suppose to know the coffee was hot!", "How was I supose to know eating junk would make me fat", "How was I supose to know the warning labels on cig's were real", "How was I supose to know they collected my information and I was supose to read those privacy letters I get in the mail".
I think these people deserve to get screwed. When I sign up for google mail. I will be aware that they are parsing my email and targeting ads to me. I accept that. And I will keep my private email to another accoount, this one will be a nice public email to give my mother who likes to forward me hundreds of messages a week, and to sign up for things that might bring me spam. That way I dont have to go in and delete it every month like I do hotmail. But you know what? If google wants to read about how I can make my boobs and penis bigger and give everyone in the world more orgasams. I dont care because they already told me they would.
That said, I would be very ticked off if I found out 6 months down the road they were doing it without ever telling us. I would rather see a company be honest about their policys then hide it and screw unsuspecting people over later.
ASCII, QWERTY keyboards
I'm ok with ditching both of those. As long as the new keyboard layout lets me type faster.
As for ASCII, thats really only good for making problems when you decide to make international versions of your software.
Hell, I own a PS2, xbox, and gamecube, but I dont own more then 4 games. I have a blockbuster gamepass, I rent them play them till bored, and return them. The price per month is less then a single game purchased. I find that after I beat a console game, I'm done with it. So why bother buying it.
I find that only knowing a single language really limits your productivity. I mean not every language fits every task. I think of them as tools, and while I may only use 2-4 of the tools in my box, I like having them all in there just in case.
Just the otherday I had a guy ask me if I could help him finish up his website in asp. I've never really wrote a vb app, but it was simple childs play by using basic programming principles. Thats also why I spend my free time working with assembly (well a hybrid of high level assembly and masm as i get better) I dont really plan to write my next program in it, or any major project, but its nice to know its there if I ever need it.

I was always led to belive it was trivial to forge headers and this is why tracking down spammers is so hard. Am I wrong?
