  1. Time on PhD Research On Software Design Principles? · · Score: 1

Time and (not so) common sense in your working environment.

If you're looking for "what design/architecture qualities are shared by all good software, lacking in bugs, maintainable, modifiable, scalable, etc, then your best bet is *a sane environment*. That is, enough time to actually do the job without having to crunch through 80% of it, and no unbridled pointy-hairs or ever-changing requirements (that old walking on water joke).

If you have that, the actual tools you're given to work with are a secondary matter. Really.

I've been wondering the same thing these last few years. You'd most likely have to go outside of the EU and other such large governmental organisations (just in that term itself, that's two things they do quite poorly). That little island/rig/platform called Sealand seems a bit over the top, though, and probably not big enough for all of us.

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if some obscure country like, say, Surinam, had a much better chance of being (made into) a proper modern democracy.

    3) all new devices only come with said feature enabled (because of you-know-who subsidising the device if it has an "MS Politeness Policy Compatible" logo on it, but don't tell anyone).

BTW, I'm someone who bought a second-hand PDA full well knowing that it, at the time of purchase, was 'obsolete' and no longer supported by the manufacturer. I don't need the new stuff, I need reliability. Call me a nostalgic, but my gear works.

Actually, I don't think so, though I can see why you say that. I'm obviously biased here because I'm a big Ford fan, but I guess a guy like that, especially with a character like that, is exactly what it takes to pull it off.

Like the classic scene where he decides he can't be bothered by the ninja, and instead just shrugs and pulls his gun. There are quite a number of little moments like that, where he reveals that Indy Jones is just a normal human and not a superhero like John McClane.

I guess I'm kinda hoping this will deliver a graceful this will have to be the last in the series and you can see why---I'm too old for this-kind of message.

I can well imagine the new movie would play on that, and being all the better for it (eg. by making him fall clumsily instead of a perfect roll, or letting him be out of breath every once in a while).

It's common to get 'cheated' out of credit like that. Especially when you're the new guy (as the parent states, most people two levels above the new guy just don't care who he is yet). And especially especially when it's not really noteworthy -- it may be a drag and a lot of work, but not really groundbreaking. Honestly, take a sober look at it -- it's "just documentation". I say this as somebody who's done plenty of the same myself. Documentation, by nature, is good to have but a bore to create.

Here's a suggestion, though. Instead of (essentially) raising objections with management (which is not the best way to make your name known), why not just add your name to every page you publish -- you know, for the purpose of quality control, or somesuch excuse? The benefit is that you get to leave your 'Kilroy was here' no matter who is taking the credit; the drawback is that you may potentially be contacted about some page five years from now, when you've (hopefully) moved up and on.
