    You'll see this stuff in episodes of Hawaii Five-O and other TV shows that have a technical aspect, but it'll never make it off Surface, and Surface will never make it to the rank and file. It's too bad, really.

    Microsoft is a major sponsor of Hawaii Five-O. This interface should look familiar to watchers of the program.

    Probably the first crime fighting show I've seen that regularly includes advertisements for an unpopular smart phone in the dialogue.

    Yes, because Hatta is the only person in the entire world with this sentiment. No one has ever seen or will ever see again, anyone on any Slashdot thread speaking up that they put their $ to hardware with open source drivers.

    There was a time when GM was happy to lose one customer to Toyota.

    This is not a contradiction, and it's not arbitrary "cruelty", and being willing to work within this framework isn't "servile".

    Happliy choosing to operate under another's absolute dictation and control is often useful, but it is still servile. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing, but it is what it is.

    While paper ballets work reliably for no inconsiderable number of modern democracies and while they certainly used to work for America as well, I think you fail to understand that voting machines, and all the accompanying problems, have been part of the American voting process for several decades now. Therefore removing them would be an assault on tradition.

    Which is why phishers go to the trouble to obtain approved certificates. It is the people with nothing to hide who are wondering why they need to pony up.

    Linux is crack for nerds and malware-free web browsing for grandmothers.

    Personally I just set up a dual boot between Linux and Windows if I feel the need to access some Windows games or other apps. I used to hack Wine to run Windows apps and was looking into virtualization but with the risk of Windows malware executing in my Linux environment I generally don't go there anymore.

    Why, then, do people maintain this "ooh, they could be doing something naughty" line about Opera, when the company has gone out of its way to be a positive member of the software community? It's FUD, pure and simple.

    Because they COULD be doing something naughty and we wouldn't find out until after the fact. It's not because they ARE doing something naughty nor because we EXPECT them to do something naughty. (we don't)

    And It's not that you cannot build good, or secure, or ethical software with closed source. It's not that you cannot build poor software with open source. Open source is about openness, about full disclosure. That is what we prefer. Not "trust us because we haven't screwed you yet and probably never will."

    People didn't expect Microsoft or Sony to do naughty things either, but here we are. Trust is fine. Source is better.
