Very well reasoned, though I think it may be too early to say about the battery life of the new T|X - even the reviewer stated he didn't have enough time to rate battery life. From any gizmo, whether PDA or zip car, battery life statements on the specs versus real life are always very different. But the other specs of the palm high-end vs. PPC high-end shows the palm drastically behind the ppc, and this will definitely cause a lot of people to choose the equivalently priced more powerful PPC over the T|X. Unfortunately, too many people will grab whatever has the biggest numbers without considering the other characteristics that are equally important - such as form factor, battery life, ease of use, portability, expadibility, compatibility with the syncing computer and PIM software, etc. People just need to pick the right tool for the job (for me the Zire was all I needed until I got annoyed with toting a PDA and a Cell - smartphone fusion was the perfect answer for the way I actually use the device. If I had the need for something more powerful, I'd definitely be looking in the PPC direction, though it would be nice to have a high-power palm option that can stand in the ring with a high-power PPC in a pure specs smackdown. For now though it does seem as though palm has given up on the high-power market. Not sure whether this is good or bad, I've always seen palm as the lower power option. YMMV
Useless. My treo 600 (only about 2 years old now) spanks that. I have had it last for over 12 hours with near-continuous mp3 music running in the background of whatever else I was doing with it, not to mention the various phone calls I make daily and any email/web/upload/download stuff I had to do. I'd be seriously pissed if this thing crapped out at only 4 hours. Having to stay close to power or lug extra battery packs with me is not an acceptable option. Having a processor that's only powerful enough to get done what needs done (even if it takes a few milliseconds longer than it would on yours) instead of sucking the battery dry as quickly as possible is much more valuable to me than your TOTL Pocket PC device. This has always been the biggest distinguishing factor between palm and ppc devices - palm favors longer battery life with lower power processors and displays vs. ppc favors shorter battery life (or much larger form factor) with higher power processors and big-as-possible displays. I for one am glad I can skip a day on charging my pda/phone if I happen to forget the cable without being concerned about running out of juice.
The term "Tungsten" really means nothing to me except heavy, since tungsten is a pretty heavy metal. But the palm Tungsten pda's aren't as heavy as if they were actually made out of the stuff, which leaves me confused. I for one am glad they move to a meaningless model letter system. But T|X makes me think of Texas, which makes me think that's one damned big PDA, I can't fit that in my pocket. But it's not that big! I'm SO COMFUZED!!
And don't get me started on the Zire thing. How the heck do you even SAY Zire? Is it Z + eye + r? Or Z + eee! + r? or Z + aye! + arr! (like a pirate)? Thank Jeebus they just made it just Z. No confusion there. Except that it has fewer letters. Does that mean when I upgrade from my Zire 21 to the Z22 I'll get fewer features because of fewer letters? But it's one number higher so that's better, right? Please help before I experience SEHS!
I'll probably get flamed for this and have all my karma trashed, but:
animals can't consent, obviously.
Is pattently wrong. Animals are perfectly capable of consenting to sexual interaction with humans. The dog humping your leg is the most obvious example of this. And if you've been near a horny mare it can be a pretty damned scary thing when they want anything at all stuck into them, they don't care whether it's another horse, a conveniently shaped knot on a tree, or a human fist. This doesn't change the fact that bestiality is all kinds of wrong, just know that animals like sex too, and even they can understand "any port in a storm".
BlackBerry = Glorified pager. These things are NOT PDAs, just the most damned powerful pager you could possibly want. What RIM did right and where Palm and MS have been lagging is in the push mail capability. Several companies (Goodlink and Seven off the top of my head) have come up with solutions that try to mimic BlackBerry's push mail service, and for the most part they get it right, but still not quite as retarded-monkey easy to use as BlackBerry since the hardware is not dedicated to this service.
To get back on topic, offering WinCE on a Treo makes sense, since for some incomprehensible reason a large number of people actually like the WinCE interface and capabilities. I myself wouldn't mind any of the WinCE flavors if it weren't for the utter crap of the interface. What Palm needs to do is either get their software up to date (which every palm owner has been screaming for for years), or apply their simple GUI design on top of the WinCE platform (which will give us the best of both worlds). This new treo looks like it's the first step on this second path to improving the overall palm experience. Of course if they would just give us OS 6 on top of the linux kernel as has been promised for such a long time all of what I've said here is moot.
As for me, I'm waiting on the Google mobile devices. That should utterly destroy this whole palm vs. pocket pc vs. newton vs. cellphone vs. just-use-a-damned-pencil-and-little-notebook BS
So how does Lynx compare to the rest of the browser world security-wise? I've been using it for years, and haven't seen any reports of any Lynx-specific exploits. Or am I missing something?
Let me be the first to suggest we call it Unobtainium. But since the material really exists and is obtainable... Um, I think I broke my brain. I go to bed now.
Even if a virus cannot attack the PDA directly, it can sit quietly in an email attachment on the device until the device gets synced to a pc, where it can affect the pc. This is where AV software can be useful now - ensuring the data on the device is clean before syncing it to a pc. Before long there WILL be plenty of malware designed to directly attack PDAs but with the wide variety of PDA platform/versions out there it will be difficult to target a sufficiently large set of users to accomplish whatever goal you're after - it's much more effective, and will continue to be more effective, to have a payload that will be delivered to a pc that will be the target of the malware. Regardless of the platform the PDA is on, at some point it will be connected to another computer and start transferring data, conveniently behind the network firewall. This is the real target of your attack and where your payoff is maximized. Attacking the PDA itself could prompt the user to wipe the device, with the user fully confident the settings and data will be restored on the next sync. Expect attacks directed to PDAs to use the device only as a carrier to deliver some payload to the computer(s) it gets connected to, rather than any exploits of the PDA itself (other than to make it a better carrier for the malware). This is currently the exclusive use for AV software on a PDA, and I expect will remain the use of AV software for the forseable future. If at some point the PDA becomes a primary computing platform with a sufficiently homogenous profile (platform/version) to make it worthwile to write a virus specifically for the PDA, then things will get a lot more interesting.
So, When will Lynx be able to pass the Acid2 test? All I can get is a download of the reference image. I just don't see why such a broadly used and important browser that's been in the OSS world for so long can't handle basic standards that are already 5 years or more old. The OSS community doesn't have a leg to stand on if it can't even get Lynx to work right.
There's an awful lot of people who don't really get how the planetary orbits work, and probably DO think that they would collide. I bet you know at least some of them. Take them out and show them the conjunction. Take them out on successive nights and describe how we can figure out the heliocentric universe from the observations.
And be sure to explain that since the planets will collide that WILL ALL DIE BURNING HELLISH DEATH when the pieces of the planets come raining down on us.
Cool. I got replies from the humor impaired. But perhaps I should have clarified that I just DON'T FRIKKING CARE about the ipod, because with a miniscule investment in a couple of SD cards I have the same capabilities as I would have with an ipod, perhaps without the massive amounts of storage space which I don't have any use for anyway, on a device that I already own, with software I already have on my pc, without having to even think about whether I'm using a proprietary or compatible format or not. That is the point. If my all-in-one cell phone can do the job an ipod does, why would I even think about getting an ipod? The extensive capabilities of the Treo 600 pda-phone render the ipod (or any other mp3 player) utterly redundant.
But after actually looking into the info on the ipod and checking out the itunes site, I must say that for handy portable personal music player, it looks like the ipod/itunes setup is excellent. But for those of us who require having a pda and a phone at the same time who also think toting tunes is also a good idea, choosing to carry three separate devices when one will do the job is just retarded.
Just look at end user opinions on the Samsung i600 released by sprint only a few months ago. This thing runs the lates windows mobile phone edition available at the time of release, and has every feature one could ask for in a PDA phone except that it doesn't work as a PDA and absolutely sucks as a phone. People who thought they were upgrading from the i500 with the same form factore are pissed that the i600 is SIGNIFICANTLY less functional than a first generation pda phone (Think of the old Kyocera PDA phones or even the Palm Visors - they were still better than this POS).
MS is way behind on the functional mobile phone market, and are very unlikely to catch up any time soon.

My first thought on reading this was:
The USA will populate the B ark. I have my ticket already, can't wait to go!

Check out the entry on Creationism (when the site is unslashdotted) for an amazingly accurate description of the subject.
I'll be waiting for my check in the mail. Thanks Bill, that will help alot. You Rock!
And here I am.
Working on Labor Day.
Submitting a post to Slashdot.
Lazy?
What else SHOULD one do when they should otherwise NOT be working?

You're joking right?
Mod parent funny.

I've found the reverse is also true: Never attribute to idiocy what can be clearly proven to be malice.
Sounds like a good plan. If bombing the rest of the planet will get me a better paycheck, count me in with our new planet-dominating overlords.

If you really need remote access on your treo, you should check this out:
Win-Hand AnywhereSpooks my wife every time I take over the home computer when I'm at work.
Conveniently, Project Gutenberg has a nice selection of his works here
Most of the work has already been done in the field of Quantum Bogodynamics. These could be an entirely new class of exotic bogodynamic particles.
Standard marketing bamboozlery should do it. Just give it a good hyptastic name. Here's some ideas:
The smart ones will know what's going on and the dumb/greenies won't know the difference.
