from my other post. OO's equation editor is not compatible with MS office.
there are many other tasks that OO's excel counterpart doesn't do when it comes to SQL and DTS.
for example.. copying row data from query analyzer results into OO will put everything into 1 cell, instead of their respective columns in excel.
yup, i admit to use MS office, i grew up on it. so until you show me something that's BETTER -AND- 100% compatible to MS office, please have a coke and a smile.
"Get a development database, a testing database and production database. Yes, you need all three"
what parent meant is: 1) get a development environment, testing environment and a production environment.
what parent realllly meant to say is: 1) get a development environment - (a server) where developers can freely push changes into and do their limited unit test and their own "regression" tests.
2) get a QA environment - (a server) where your QA team (hopefully you have one) are the only one who can push changes into this box. have an issue/enhancement tracking system (there are many free ones out there) so you can track what goes in.
3) get a pre-production environment - (a server) where it is -always- only 1 version ahead of your production. no one should have access to this machine except folks who are responsible for pushing things into production(IT team). if something gets pushed into this merely for testing, the IT team is responsible to undo the push immediately after the test is done.
4) get a production environment - (a server) where this is your production code resides. no one has write access to this box except IT team. IT team is not allowed to touch this box except in dire emergencies and during normal production push window (once a week -> once a yr depending on your development lifecycle). during the production push window, you copy everything from pre-production into production.
most of the corporations that i've dealt with do the following: 1) rational clearquest for development of enhancements, version tracking 2) remedy for IT or production support related issues.
also, they have another environment sitting between QA and the "pre-production", it's for all of the changes that get passed by QA but not yet ready to be pushed into production during your next push cycle.
while i don't share the same pessimistic view as you, i'm disappointed w/ the way that our government has handled in this so called "war on terrorism".
well, the parent poster of my original post said something to the effect of: US won't dare use nukes to bomb someone else because other countries have more nukes if and when they combine their weaponries together.
i was just stating the lunacy of that statement. in the unlikely event that US does use nukes on someone. no one else would really interfere out of their own survival interests.
given that, i'd also say that it'd be a sad day indeed for all of us if that does happen at some point in the future. me, as an american, would feel supremely disappointed about our nation and about the world as a whole if we somehow have to resort to nuclear war to resolve our differences. even if the terrorists started it.
you mean, aside from the fact that if and when you share your internet connection, you will be responsible for the users of that connection download copyrighted material?
ya mind posting where you live? we'll be happy to suck up your bandwidth.
just to comment on your assessment of eve-online. it happens to be the the only game that can support over 11000 players online in the same world simultaneously. a true massive multi player online rpg indeed.
additionally, it is the only game where there is a true ingame economy. most of the other games have vendors that will buy things from the players, to my knowledge, it is the only game where the players are the only participants in the market.
i don't play the game anymore, but when i did play the game, the #1 thing that attracted me was the economy.
it's not that IMB likes GPL, it's the fact that IMB likes what GPL does for its business. Another way to look at it, IMB's executives convinced the board that going w/ GPL will make them more money in the end.
have you looked at treo600? it excels at both pda and phone. so i guess there are products out there that aren't combination of the worst of two worlds.. eh?
i have to use IE for work, so I use a combination of things:
1) crazy browser, an excellent tabbed browser add-on that does exactly what I want. even better than firefox.
2) ad muncher, a very robust ad blocker engine that sits in your tray and blocks off unwanted ads. it has similar technologies to adblock extensions (wildcards to sites, etc)
just in case you guys are looking for something for IE..
just think, playing everquest2 in a meeting and everyone think you are working frantically to solve IT problems.
that'd require a tablet w/ 2gb of ram and a 9700pro vid card.
because i don't want to spend time organizing my files. i bought a $2000 machine so i can work on my presentations, emails.
letting computer do what it does best (parsing information, organizing information based on metadata) is the direction that we are going, whether you like it or not.
For one thing, you can always just not use the feature.
we are comparing features/usability in ms office vs. features/usability in OO.
please, up the meds.
here's one.

unfortunately 99.9% of the world out there use MS office. I had my SO tried out the openoffice,
the equation editor from OO isn't compatible w/ MS office. can ya guess what she said?
"well i can't turn in this garbage as homework. gimme word back".
since ms office is the standard, anything that deviates from it will not work, as much as we like the open standards and all.

hope that helps!

the people's republic of united states.
how is this different than:
1) buying a cheap (non internet, non media) keyboard from bestbuy, or a computer shop
2) spray paint the darn thing in black?
i mean.. wtf? 80 bucks for that?
well think of it this way, the category 5 storms would just be the natural events for the tour!
people complain that themeparks like sixflags are getting stale and don't have enough events.
you'd have a fresh new event/system once a year with this one.
while i don't share the same pessimistic view as you, i'm disappointed w/ the way that our government has handled in this so called "war on terrorism".
it's not about "thinking for yourself".
these are tools that i use for work/leisure. it's not my religion. just because i use ms office, doesn't mean i don't think for myself.

umm.. which other nation in their right mind would stand up for SADDAM, and shoot their own nukes at usa?
what are you, 12?
but, we'd never use nukes on terrorists, because of the precedent that it sets.

hell did freeze over.. you didnt' get the memo? macs r using intel chips.. welcome to last week!
it's okay when Apple violate the law. but when MS does it, boy, we need a revolution!
until you lose that DVD.

there goes the plot for the 5th season of 24.

yup, i am gonna spend 2000 dollars on a 12.1 inch TOUCHSCREEN so i can run LINUX IN TEXT MODE.
eh.. really, i'm sorry i offended anybody w/ the $2000 for a computer comment.
but jeesus fucking christ, can't we stay away from the my dick is bigger cuz i use a mac vs. my cock is thicker cuz i use a pc comments?
aside from being COMPLETELY OFF-TOPIC, ya beating a horse that died years ago.
