I really don't know how one company's "good" name can dissuade those with decision making power (read: IT departments) to not choose a more secure solution for their firms/comapnies/clients. I mean, it's kind of important.

Maybe this is the software equivalent of "it's not what you know, it's who you know."

(Btw, you really can't compare Communicator's mail program to Outlook in terms of features and functionality, unless you meant Outlook Express.)

The whole napster thing was one small part of the already huge music industry. When you compare the number of people that used napster to the number of mindless drones watching MTV, and buying whatever Carson Daily tells them to, you'll realize that the industry is not going to be noticably hurt. (And even if they are hurt by napster users not buying anything anymore, they would claim otherwise, so they could get support for the "napster hurt our business, and sales increased now that it is dead" argument).

Dude, give me a break. Compare Compiling and installing nvidia drivers by hand, to sticking in a CDROM and pointing and clicking. Compare using
xvidtune to stretch your X viewable area to the extents of your monitor, to right clicking on the desktop and pointing and clicking. Compare using apt or rpm (and dont quote me frontends to those, because frontend's SUCK) to sticking in a CD and pointing and clicking.

"But you have to reboot for all of those!" I hear you say. Is it easier for Joe Idiot to reboot, or to remember to su every time he needs to do one of the above?

A lot of day-to-day operations/commands have to be performed in an MS-way, and I can't customize.
Now ask yourself how many of those "day-to-day" commands are A) caused by using linux or B) not of any interest to Joe AOL. All of them.

My point is that the target audience for linux is not the desktop user, it's the power user who wants to hack everything he sees. To me, attempting to jam "user friendliness" into an OS that has never meant or required user friendliness is like jamming a square piece into a round hole.

(And I have one of those rainbirds too. I think they fucked up that thing's design bad. They attemped to make it for every body to use, but they failed. Bad design doesn't prove your point about user-friendliness though.)

  11. Hold it right there on Adobe Threatens KIllustrator Over Name · · Score: 4

2500 Euro? For some guy's spare time project?Cripes.

Hold it right there. If everyone here is always praising free software, then you can't turn around and claim that Adobe shouldn't treat this particular project with the same amount of seriousness as it would any other (commercial) competitor. You don't know if KIllustrator is tomorrow's wonder-project, that everyone knows about (e.g. Linux kernel). If you can sing the praises of free software 24-hours a day, then Adobe has every right to treat this as a threat, and better to take care of it now then later.

If this is how companies are going to try to kill free software, we need to establish a pool of good software names that no one has trademark claims to and nail them down.

    You think?

People should stop ripping off names (and consequently, attempts at name-recognition) and do exactly what you suggest.

(And imagine if Adobe tried to rippoff the name of a free-software project. Wouldn't all of /. be up in arms with pitch forks and torches?)

It seems to me that companies with centralized control mechanisms are much much better suited to responding to industry threats. Meanwhile, all the "open-source movement" does is look up "interesting reads" on slashdot. What's the damn point? Who's going to counter any move by a single company with a single focus? Even if an alternative strategy comes up to attack the various upcoming microsoft initiatives, there's bound to be endless complaining, and back-and-forth. "Well, it uses a BSD license" or "Well, it's GNOME and I like KDE" or "Well, it would be better done in X fashion" ad nauseum.

Blah. I just have to get this off my chest, I guess, but I think there's a lot more pointless hot air in the "open-source movement" floating around in discussions and debates, while companies worried about bottom lines are getting shit done, like, now. In my mind, it's been proven that companies with some financial interest in their product put in more effort and produce high quality, useable (read: not fucking beta!) stuff.
