Having stats like this available is great, but the problem is the figures don't match reality. As a contractor that worked on a system to log crime for the UK police force for several years, it became apparent that one of the goals of the system was to allow "adjustment" of what is a serious crime or a minor offence.

Want to change the crime rate? Simply update the category for various offences until the target rate is achieved, report to media. Everybody wins ;-)

By purchasing the domain name you would, in a sense, be donating to the person who fought Righthaven in court and won - doing us all a favour in the process.

Apologies in advance for being a little confrontational about this topic ...

The thing to remember about warez crackers, is they tend to be more skilled than the people who release the games. Trying to outsmart them is a fallacy.

Sorry, but popular meme is utter bollocks. Crackers are (mostly) good at cracking software and while I agree that successful cracking is quite a technical task or challenge, and that not many people are capable of that skill there are at least two very obvious problems with what they do.

There are plenty of examples of software available that has never been completely cracked - yes, the software works to a point but it's not 100% cracked. Virtual synth Zebra 2.5 by U-he is a great example. That's one point against the so called "genius crackers".

The second point being that if the crackers were any good at software development they would have the vision, skill and patience to create new software that inspires people to play through the game / create beautiful works of art / solve new problems. It is quite obvious that they do not have these skills, and will instead take the glory from spending a few hours in front of a debugger and then claiming the work as their own.

I know who gets my respect ... and who gets my money ...

  13. Chicken and Egg on Anxiety and IT? · · Score: 1

While certain environments may contribute to overall levels of anxiety and stress if not properly managed, it is the "anxiety" that makes us geeks so obsessive about a given task. How we manage the anxiety and how we let it affect our well being is part of what separates those who are successful at their work from the average. Success in this context is not meant in financial terms, but the ability to get things done in a timely manner, on spec, and with a high degree of satisfaction regarding the finished product.

Also it has been a long running joke with certain colleagues of mine that programmers in particular are prone to having, at least to a small degree, autistic tendencies. Without a singularly focussed mind it would be very difficult or impossible to complete certain development or IT related tasks.

Of course there are always exceptions but these are some personal observations arising from 20 years of working in development, or development related environments.

There's a reason why the Pirate Bay is successful and it is rarely mentioned. Apart from the content being free, and DRM free, the service offered is generally agnostic to brands, labels or formats. It is like Google for media - raw results for any media query. Until the worlds media companies can agree to build a centralised service that is effectively neutral, services like the Pirate Bay will continue to flourish. It will probably never happen though, because they're all too busy stepping over each other in the race for the prize, while at the same time believing that whatever service they dream up next will be better than everything that has gone before it.

Perhaps, but that is the voice of our collective ego driven mind (using the strict Buddhist sense) thinking, or believing, that it can outsmart nature ... the very same ego driven aspect of our individual and collective personalities that will slowly but surely kill off large numbers of, if not all, humans and other life on this planet.

You are supposed to write software because you like to do it, not as a full-time job. The multi-millionaires developers didn't exist before the invention of home computers and probably won't exist after that. That was more of an accident. Software devs don't have a right to make money from their software, it just happened to work well. I don't have the right to use their apps for free, it just happens to work well.

Auto-update works if you have a legitimate copy of Windows, and there are plenty of people using pirated copies of Windows which do not qualify for the "genuine advantage" required by Windows Update.

Even if MS managed to patch every security hole in Windows, there would still be a massive gaping hole left by the people who can't use auto-update and who are not inclined, or simply lack the technical ability, to seek out and install the required patches via a manual download.

This leads one to wonder about the wisdom of blocking illegitimate licenses from obtaining security updates via the auto-update service, as the end result of the decision is that everyone suffers to some degree e.g. increased spam levels.
