I lived in Britain in 2004 and what you say is true... as an Australian I could hardly believe it; cheques practically disappeared here decades ago. the only people who still use them are the elderly, who also go and use bank tellers instead of ATMs.
So, why are we still fighting the War on Drugs? Why is no one talking about ending it?
because doing so would give their opponent mud to sling. such talk would lead to whoever said it being constantly accused of being in support of children taking illegal drugs, or some other illogical nonsense. facts and logic take a back seat in politics.
if you're repurposing the gp's post you need to also replace "truth" with "profit" for it to even make sense. you missed the point the gp was making completely
I'd tell him that his opinion is not a very educated one.
yes; because you with no games to your name are obviously more educated in platform sales statistics than someone who's made millions selling games on the said platforms. I see no reason not to take what he says at face value. I suspect you've just spent big dollars on upgrading your pc in the last 6 months, and are feeling a little bitter that consoles are getting 2x as many good games this Christmas. sucks to be you
nobody's disputing that. the difference is that plenty of not-tech-savvy folk own xbox's, but the number of not-tech-savvy users with computers good enough to run the latest and greatest games on pc is far fewer.
but if laying fibre isnt going to alleviate the problem of slow web traffic (and lets be honest, for 90+% of internet users web == the internet), why would it encourage the tightarse government in Australia start laying it?
no idea, noscript is not something I personally use because i find it be more of a pain in the ass than a help most of the time, but i know it stops pages refreshing themselves which is why it got a mention.
what good is fibre when all your traffic goes through an overloaded, slow ass filter? woo, I have 100mbps to my house, but the filter that all traffic is forced to pass through wont process at more than 50kbps per user. huzzar!
RAID doesn't protect against your worst enemy

nor is it supposed to. not being a moron seems to have protected me from "my worst enemy" just fine. RAID has protected me from random disk failures. seems to be working as designed
it's interesting that people will go to great lengths commit copyright infringement on music/movies/tv/videogames, but there doesnt appear to be people willing to step up and ignore sun's licencing and port it anyway. sure; it could never be incorporated into the official linux kernel releases, but I'm suprised that it doesnt exist as a patch available through "other channels".
And having used one for the past year, the glare issue is really a red herring. I don't notice it.
well, having used a macbook for the past year, I strongly refute that. The glare is a huge issue. Colours look great... unless theres a light source other than the laptop in the room (and dont even bother trying to use it outside or near a window), then there's glare so you tilt the screen and the colours distort. perhaps thats an issue with the shitty lcds they put in macbooks. the powerbook I had before it had far better viewing angles, whereas the macbook doesnt require much tilting for the colours to change and the contrast between light colours to disappear (for example the grey comment box outlines on slashdot "disappear"). the glossy screen has been the deciding factor for me that when I eventually replace the laptop I was going to buy from the mbp range JUST for the matte screen. and now they've taken away that option:(
I'm sure Woz is sort of conflicted by the fact that, as much as he might want to, it would be impolitic for him to announce he had jailbroken his phone.
I think somebody has to keep the big companies in check by not using their privacy invasive services. by holding out, you're showing them that enough is enough. I think you should, by all means, hold firm. somebody has to do it, and it's not going to be me. their "free" services are just to damned useful. it might as well be you
how does shit like this get moderated interesting? yeah, open source the game and see how much money you DONT MAKE on the port developed by the community. that's obviously the best way for a game development company to make money
You still need a custom hacked Kernel to do it, this removes that need. Even hackintosh's need a custom DVD, this will install with an off the shelf Leopard DVD.
Not anymore. this is pretty much just a boot-132 live cd, on a very overpriced usb flashdrive. I redid my hackintosh this way a few weeks back installed straight off my retail dvd, loading only extra kexts for unofficially supported hardware (and of course dsmos and disabler) off the boot cd..
most metric geeks are fine with Kelvin, since Celsius uses the exact same scale, just with 0 offset by 276. simple arithmetic you could do in your head. compare that to Fahrenheit where you have to add/subtract 459.67 and multiply/divide by 5/9 (depending which direction you're converting)
The fact is, they should never be presented with that message because we have anticipated this possibility, and designed the product accordingly.
your product is a word processor. the user has just tried to save their work but there's an error writing the file to disk (inadequate permissions for the sake of the example). what are you proposing happens in such a scenario? the user is never told that their work has not been successfully saved? we write it somewhere arbitrary (without telling the user as to avoid an evil message box) leaving them to wonder where the hell the file they saved went? how exactly are you proposing such a situation be handled without user interaction that doesn't leave them mystified as to what the hell just happened.
proposing that popups are bad and anyone who uses them is an idiot is all well and good, but perhaps you could suggest how to get important information to the user without ever presenting the information to the user.
What makes sense beyond a certain age is annual tests.
I'm an advocate of this idea, but I dont think the "beyond a certain age" qualifier is necessary. I see plenty of people in their late-20s/early-30s who drive terribly and would fail a test; and I think it's largely due to ignorance of the changes in the road rules (and sometimes just plain ignorance to the rules in general). People who make turns across traffic into the furthest lane; People who stay in the fast lane while doing 20 under the limit; people who dont understand who had right-of-way at a "give way" or stop sign; people who dont understand who has right of way on a roundabout, or how to properly indicate their intentions on one... hell, lots of people dont seem to understand proper use of indicators at all and turn them on only once it's already apparent what they're doing (like the name of them wasn't a big enough hint that you're supposed to use them BEFORE you do something to INIDCATE to those around you. if you've braked and started to turn the corner before you put them on, chances are I already know you're an idiot turning). I'd feel much safer on the road if EVERYONE had to do a new test every 5 years or so, and then possibly more frequently past a certain age
it's interesting they provoke this response in some people. most "average joe" type people see the ad, and can relate the many of the problems that PC seems to encounter; while in others, like yourself, they seem to hit a nerve. it's almost like you've bought into your platform so bad that anything that's insulting/deamning to it appears to be a personal attack on you yourself

Consider it your warning that you need to change your surroundings before continuing your work ... not a reason to get a different display.
and here I was thinking people bought laptops so they could work anywhere they wanted

damn you submit button! I meant preview
Did we just read a Google Advertisement?
yes. it's entirely impossible that someone would actually be happy with a product and offer praise of it. definitely an ad.[/sarcasm]

compiz fusion greys out a window when the app owning the window is being unresponsive. assuming the Eee is running compiz, that would be your cause.
