    There, fixed that for you. I'm fairly certain the the USA is unique in their wireless pricing model, and every time it comes up the rest of the world looks on in amazement how badly the corporations have you all by the balls. Outside of the USA, the only charges I've ever heard of for incoming calls/message are when you're roaming internationally (for obvious reasons)

    recently I've been playing the iPhone version and aside from semi-frequent crashes i feel it's a near perfect platform for scummvm. the screen is low-res enough that it doesnt need super-fancy scaling algorithms, while the DPI is high enough that everything looks beautiful. lucasarts adventures in my pocket, everywhere I go, awesome! If only it was allowed in the official app store

    you seem to have pretty specific demands, so I'll assume you're not too scared to venture into gmail labs.

    1. I think first you need to opt-in for gmail labs, I dont remember where i did that but it was probably on the "What's new" page
    2. settings -> labs -> quick links = enabled. save.
    3. back to your inbox -> add quick link -> enter "is:unread label:inbox", sans quotes

    yes, you need to enter a search term; but it's only once, and after that you have exactly what you want with a single click

    Get GMail out of beta. Heck, it's been over 2 years!

    Announcement date wa April 1st, 2004. it's been over FOUR years. I think dropping the "invite-only" system is as close as it's ever going to see to leaving beta... not that it isn't already better than plenty of not-beta webmail sites

    what's more, the guy appears to have a pretty shitty attitude:

    I can't write code for the sake of the technology alone - I need to know that the code is useful for others, and the only way to measure the usefulness is by the amount of money that the people are willing to part with to have access to my work.

    what the hell would make something think that "amount of money extracted from customer" is the only factor in determining usefulness?

    +1 here. I regularly got debt collector calls about someone who shares my name and birth month (not date, but who can expect a debt collector to do their job and actually look up the right person). It took a police report and an a identity theft investigation to uncover that it wasn't someone using my details, but some jackass not doing their job properly

    Another reason people NAT is for address portability. There is *still* no way for small fish to get a IP that isn't bound to their provider.

    well, I don't belong to the united states, so if one of their states wanted independence I would be in support of the state in the same way I am in support of Tibet. I would like to think I would react the same way if one of Australia's (the country I do belong to) states declared independence; but who knows, perhaps I would feel different if it really happened. Forcing people to be a part of a country against their will doesn't really seem like a stable way to run a country

    It would be much the same reaction for the USA as if Hawaii or Alaska had suddenly (unilaterally) declared independence and then the US Army went in an killed anyone in a supporting the independence, while the redneck American folk attacked anyone who spoke out with the idea that the people living there should be the only ones to decide whether or not they want to be a part of a larger country, with the USA government all the while feeding them stories that China was behind the uprising, and that the Hawaiians were "naughty people who deserved it"

    fixed that for you. no, I cant relate to their feelings. I am not completely out of touch with reality, sorry.

    Stop and think about it for a second - how could a single static web page on Apple's servers contain a list of applications you have disabled?

    I never claimed that it would; all I said was that there was a way to block apps from the accessing gps, in response to the AC that implied that every app had access to it. Reading comprehension never was a strong point around here.

    take a guess what happens when you pick "don't allow" from the confirmation box.

    ...OMFG thats right, the requesting app ISN'T ALLOWED access to the current location. who would have thought it?

    Well if that seems perfectly reasonable to you, iPhone isn't really for you since currently no applications are blocked from using your GPS...

    is that so mr anonymous coward? that's odd, since my iPhone pops up a message ""app_name" would like to use your current location" the first time each app tries to access the GPS since the last reboot. seems to me you're talking right out your ass

    isn't that being a bit pedantic? someone admits they've just signed up for facebook today and used wordscraper but gets the jargon wrong and you go acting like a complete tosser. are you really so thick you're unable to tell that they meant they added the application to their wall?

    I don't know if this is the case for you, but I find most people who find LaTeX hard are using it wrongly. Specifically, they are trying to precisely control the formatting, placement, etc. etc. of everything in their document. This is, pretty much, how you use today's WYSIWYG word processors.

    no, this is how you _wrongly_ use today's WYWIWYG word processors and end up with a horribly hard to maintain document.

    It's very cumbersome and arcane to do the same in LaTeX, and the results don't usually look very good in either case.

    isnt that the common complaint about Word, and usual reason why everyone should use LaTeX instead? because it's cumbersome and a nightmare to work with. if you learn to use word properly (start with paragraph styles and work on from there) it's a much better program than people give it credit for. it's just that most people try and micromanage the document, and then when you decide you want to change a font size you have to change it in 20,000 different places, instead of just editing the style.

    that said, I still dont know anyone who can use word for bibliographies/referencing effectively. LaTeX completely dominates it in that respect.
