Clearly, there is a difference between filtering at public libraries and filtering all internet connections in your country. There's also a difference when you arrest those who violate your censorship rules.

Well, I think we'd both have to determine what "change the world" really means, and what a positive difference is.
You seem to be taking the scientific/academic view of positive change on the world. That's completely vaild. What I was trying to say in my comment, and didn't really fully explain, is that I believe true change in the world is not driven by academia, but by politics and cultural leaders. Those leaders weren't home schooled, they had real world experience.
I'm not advocating for conformity to the system. Just real world experience. You don't learn what real people are like by simply meeting with other "geniuses" and by being taught by your parents.
The genius that will change the world will not be some child prodigy that has never seen the world out of some limited elitist vision of the world.
The geniuses that will change the world probably understand the system, are in the system, and manipulate the system, social and academic, to their needs. It is they who will change the world.
With a cosigner on the account, you can own and use a VISA card online.
I would know, as I'm a 15 year old with a VISA card that's linked to my checking account.
You've looked at three factors of a much larger problem, and selectively chosen those three factors. Yes, we have succeeded at some things, and, yes, we have failed at many others. Come on, let's not resort to logical fallacies.
The main problem the industry has with recording devices is lossless copying (or close to), not tape recording. That's why we didn't have this problem 10 years ago. Obviously, the argument suggested by the article refers to that kind of copying, while the parent seems to try to push the argument to its illogical limit.
As you migth have noticed, there is actually going to be a WikiPatent website, and right now it's looking just to be a forum to discuss the main points of WikiPatent. If you want to mod, you're invited, email if such.
I think this can be a proper forum for talking. I don't mind losing my +5 posts / unrated posts ratio.:) Well, I have the domain in my possession, and I sent an email to the EFF describing the main purpose, the first comment, numerous positive sucessful comments, gave an example scenario, and asked them for hosting, a mailing list type setup, maybe some eff-blog references, or just the possibility of them linking to us somewhere and the WikiPatent.org site having a little EFF logo somewhere.
What we probably need now is hosting... I asked EFF, but who knows and I'm wondering if anyone out there has *nix-based hosting available. phpNUKE sounds great for now, and setting up a mailing list in addition to that would be good. If anyone has access to a mailing list server that we can use as a basic set-up, that would be great. Even if people just get a grassroots thing going by putting up small things in their blogs and whatnot and linking to this thread, we'll be doing okay.
I just registered wikipatent.org... I'll definitely look into contacting the EFF. And maybe even Groklaw. Then the Wikipedia people. Wow... I need to contact a lot of people. Well, what is is summer break for than doing some cool slashdot-oriented project?
How about a Wiki-type thing that lists some previous art for patents that a watchdog group lists out? Get some serious evidence and archive it in one place so the masses can check and see what patents they don't really have to pay attention to.
- Digital movies / replacement iPod
- Complete Linux system for the iPaq or any other linux-capable handheld, including bunch of window managers, web browsers, the full deal...
- uh... pictures?
- Very detailed handheld games
- Portable databases needed for business and whatnot ...
That really doesn't always work. I live in San Francisco, and there are a few tougher neighborhoods - and the residents profile you. I'm white. I also look younger than I am. Though I can walk past most situations, some people just think that "white people have lots of money" and go after you. You can't really escape it. Thus, pepper spray and whatnot (though if you have pepperspray, you can't threaten with it, you have to use it, or else you could escalate the situation a lot), and a general sense of how to get out of a situation helps.
Well, maybe, just maybe, I wanted info about theories of how far you could actually be away from the laptop to retrieve the sounds, or the type of room the laptop was placed in that would provide the most opportune moment for capturing the sounds. Maybe I wanted to know how degraded the results could be in order to get the info about the processing. Maybe you should just crawl back into your cave, AC.
Does anyone know the range of how far you can be away from the computer to hear the sounds?
The proof-of-concept website just seemed to be "look, here are pictures of computer operations... in sound! Yay!" without enlightening us on any details.
Does anyone else think that now, the reward might justify the cost, if maybe only in the mind of venture capitalists? I could imagine some random super scientist going to a VC firm, purposing, estimating risk, then getting such a loan, with the promise of profit for the investors.
It pains me that I have a Google gmail account.
And no invitions to sell.
(I got it through blogger, who offers the accounts to those who have a certain post rate... if you have an even higher post rate than myself, you get two invitations... which my friend has, but refuses to give to me to sell.)
For the less-eblock-inclined, to create logic gates:
Connect two buttons to a two way logic gate, and set it...
For an AND Gate: 0001
For a OR Gate: 0111
For a NOR Gate: 1000
Now, all we need are NOT gates (1 input, 1 output, inverts input)... then you can build massive neat things.
Windows open source software can be great, so check out the The Open CD. It includes such wonderful things as (in type-of-application order):
OpenOffice.org, AbiWord, GIMP
Mozilla, FileZilla, TightVNC, WinHTTrack, PuTTY
Audacity, CDex, Crack Attack!, Sokoban YASC, Celestia, Really Slick Screensavers
7-Zip, SciTE, WinPT, NetTime
All of that would be great. Maybe even print up a little intro booklet to help the user in deciding what to install.
Remember, once you have a large enough amount of capital, any advantage over 50% is garaunteed to make you money. IIRC, the Wired article on the MIT blackjack card counters said that they had quite a "low" advantage over the casino (one that seems insignificant to a lot of people), but because of the money that was invested, they were able to win over the casino in a big way.

Yeah, it works.
And it's pretty too. Someone give that man mod points!

Last I checked, copyright infringement was a crime.

Don't get me wrong though, I hate this DRM stuff.
Yahoo now offers 100 mb to all free accounts, and 2 gigabytes to premium accounts. I love competition.

Yeah, sure, not too bad, but what about Hunter's Point?

BensBargains pretty much does it for me. Ben parses a lot of other deal websites, then compiles it together. Overall, pretty good.

How many of the standard library users can install an OS on their own? What if they erase their entire disk?
