I don't know about your area, but in mine the "video on demand" service is a joke,

Agreed about VOD, but in my area TWC has just introduced actual DVR boxes. Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000HD.

I haven't used it yet, but mine's on its way. I stream mp3's with digital audio cable directly from my computer, so extra features like that, though cool, aren't necessary for me. I'm also afraid they're meaningless to the general populace.

  12. Re:TiVo is on its last legs. on Tivo and Netflix Partner For DVDs on Demand · · Score: 3, Insightful
Actually, I agree with you to some extent. I was going to mention this, but I was in a hurry to get FP (and I failed anyway goddammit).

However, I don't see how TiVo is going to continue to compete with actual content providers. The Time Warner box in question (Scientific Atlanta 8000HD) can handle HDTV, something the cheap-ass $100 TiVo cannot. So now we're talking about a relatively expensive initial investment for the TiVo hardware.

I'm a hardware nerd, and totally happy to hack a TiVo to 320GB, but most people aren't. Remember that.

As for the $300 package, $300 would buy me five years worth of TWC DVR service. I find it highly unlikely anyone will *really* be using that 5 year old modded TiVo at that point. Maybe some people would, but I'm usually much faster on the electronics upgrade cycle than that.

As far as I can tell, the TiVo's widely-celebrated interface is the only advantage it has, and I'm afraid people aren't going to want to pay what is suddenly a VERY large price difference just for that. Especially people who have never USED both interfaces.

I would MUCH rather see a company like TiVo succeed, instead of Time Warner. But I have to admit TWC is getting my $5/mo, and Tivo isn't getting a dime. :(

  13. TiVo is on its last legs. on Tivo and Netflix Partner For DVDs on Demand · · Score: -1, Flamebait
This is a desperate move from a desperate company. Who cares about TiVo anymore? My Time Warner box gives me DVR functions for $5/mo and i don't have to buy any hardware. Remind me why I should buy a $300 box and THEN pay $12.95 per month?

PS2 + TiVo + DVD-R + Fits the elegant design of my half million dollar game room >= PSX

Have you ever seen a half million dollar game room? When you spend that kind of money, you have serious system designers, serious installers, and serious hardware. You have a $2500 Arcam FMJ DVD player, or an $8000 Carousel. You don't use your Playstation for a DVD player. Have you ever compared PS2-as-DVD player to even a $200 DVD player? I know the live-in-mom's-basement slashdot crowd thinks their PS2 connected to the RF input of their VCR displayed in fluctuating brightness Macrovision glory on their 27" Apex TV is the be-all-end-all of consumer electronics, but trust me-- it gets better than that. And the guy designing and installing a half-million dollar game room/entertainment space knows this, and will collect for himself the high margins associated with $2500 DVD players and all the necessary extra cabling. With that budget, everything can be hidden away effectively too, if that is what is desired.

I'd say that the PSX will be installed for shits and giggles in half-million-dollar-entertainment-room guy's bedroom, maybe.

Actually, cell phone manufacturers are in as much trouble as these Chinese DVD player manufacturers.

EETimes covered this last month. http://www.eet.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=256 00132

This is the way it works. Every new handset generation comes with a compelling new set of features. Each is subsidized by service providers to get it on the market. But each feature set quickly triggers a market share war among service providers, causing them to offer the handset for bubble-pack pricing or to simply bundle it with a service contract and give it away. The only money for the service provider is in services -- not in hardware. This exerts incredible pricing pressure on handset makers, both to innovate and to ruthlessly eliminate their own margins.

This is just the way things go in electronics manufacturing, and it makes sense. Electronics technology moves much faster than manufacturing technology, so there is just inherent pressure in the market that eventually drives out profits. The nice thing about this is that it forces innovative new ideas to come along to a) Make improvements in manufacturing efficiency, b) Stay on the bleeding edge of technology with new products that can generate high margins for a good while (see Dell's foray into high-end "gaming" systems) and c) Build highly innovative products with killer features and high consumer appeal (see the iPod).

As for the commodity manufacturers, the market corrects itself. There is a glut in worldwide DVD-player manufacturing capacity. Some of these companies will continue to eek out meager profits building DVD-players, while others will retool and remain successful manufacturing the next generation of commodity electronics, and still others will die. But this is merely a sympton of progress. Those companies that survive will be the reason we can get LCD TV's for $200 by Christmas 2006, and the whole cycle will repeat itself.
