Not to troll or anything, but what good is open source and computers if the people don't even have food and aren't exactly the most... advanced people around?
Oh, yep! 50,000 PCs (Athlon 3200+s)working together nonstop! Only one week?! What a simple task! Why, I'll just pull out 5 million (chump change, really) and get to work on my 50,000 PCs!
The ECC2 Challenge, sponsored by Certicom, began in November 2002, and the gross CPU time used to solve the challenge was roughly equivalent to an Athlon XP 3200+ working nonstop for 1,200 years. This victory is especially notable because it is the biggest ECC encryption challenge ever solved and will likely remain so for a while since the next challenges are an order of magnitude larger and would require years to complete using current processors.
That website is a crackpot website. Cold Fusion, people with no brains, etc... Utter nutcases who scream "CLOSED-MINDED WESTERN MATERIALIST SCIENTIST!!!" if you laugh at their BS.
What are you talking about? Even the public ISOs have those available. Did you not install them when you installed Mandrake? If so, download them with urpmi instead.
Microsoft has come pretty damn close, in some ways.
We have Office, the OSes, some hardware (mice, controllers, keyboards...), among many other things. With this news about the "GooOS", perhaps Google will try to overtake them?
...this seems to be a way for Microsoft to ensure that if the old operating systems need to be installed (on older hardware), someone will be "certified" to support them. Also, it's to ensure that the installation is legal.
This has to be one of the coolest magazine stunts I've ever seen in a long time.
If you're really concerned about them being able to get satalite photos of your house by knowing your address, you should also surf under a proxy on the internet at all times. An IP can be traced, as well.
Maybe because kernel updates are rather significant, adding features or fixing crucial bugs?
Kernel updates aren't exactly small details. The kernel is the core of the GNU/Linux (See Stallman, I'm a gooood boy, put away the gun...) operating system, and it's newsworthy to point out when it updates.
I always enjoy finding out when the kernel is updated, so I know when to upgrade.
You'd have a complaint if slashdot announced every alpha, beta, and release candidate or whatever. But they don't.

That's some pretty hardcore encryption.

Well, the cost-quality ratio is an important factor.
Linux is low-cost and high-quality.
That's exactly what I noticed. I tried to post something similar but the database was being maintained...

Anyone got a link to a .torrent?
What's wrong with a "monopoly" if they offer the best service around?

You forget when the become a religion.
I agree completely. Stop giving the RIAA your money if you hate them.
Of course, the RIAA are still assholes, I won't say they aren't.
The Linux kernel is precisely what I had in mind.
...Isn't it true that they left out the NX (no-execute?) bit, thus causing some compatibility issues?
You are a genius.
Uh..
1st- Microsoft
2nd- Someone affiliated with but NOT actually Microsoft
3rd- company not affiliated with microsoft
It's interesting that you're not telling us what you're selling.
Anyway, quit bitching just because other companies have a business model they are more attracted to. Join them or perish...

It's basically second-party support.

I agree with the above poster. And I happen to use Mandrake-- I'm using it right now!
I'm glad to see they are making money, too.
Actually, not all the software is free. May I point you to the ever-popular WineX? That software is still profitable.
Not everything under Linux is free, and sometimes it just shouldn't be if you're to make a profit.
