Well, I already replied to the person with the .sig, so I'll keep this one short: I agree with your sentiment, but the particular program is seriously flawed and will cause a TON of damage when it collapses. Hope your friends (and you) have a backup plan. It's not on the verge of collapse, and the only reason it's in danger is because greedy people want to dismantle it. With minor changes (raised retirement age, need-based retirement scale, etc) it could go on indefinitely. The TON of damage will only happen if politicians get their way in "privatizing" SS.

And no, a lot of people don't have backup plans. 1 in 5 elderly Americans have no income besides SS. My birth mother gets SS for disability, and that's the only reason she can afford the daily nursing care she needs. If she didn't get SS, she would die a slow painful death because no one in our family (I was adopted by her sister, complicated story) has the resources or ability to care for in the way she needs. There's a lot of other people who would be screwed without SS (and before you ask what people did before SS, yes they did starve) and that's why we can't let it be dismantled.

The problem is Sony, MS and Nintendo will not allow AO games on their consoles. Gotta blame the ESRB and hardware companies for this crap. I don't blame the ESRB. Their job is to rate games, and if they feel a game is worth an AO then they should rate it AO. As for the hardware companies, I can understand why they don't want to approve of an AO game, but there should be a way for games they don't like to be playable on the systems. It's not like Sony can prevent Pokémon DVDs from playing in Sony DVD players (though it is amusing that I have to play my Gamecube demo DVD in my PS2), so why should they prevent people from making games that will play in PS3s? I think the reason they started was to prevent the crapware problem that the Atari had, but every time Nintendo lets another Fuzzy Animalz or Psychic Shiny Disney Actress game on the DS that breaks just a little more.

Social Security helps a lot of people - some of whom I personally know and would have no other options if it wasn't for SS. Social Darwinism only helps the people who don't need help.

Even once the price lowers, who wants to pay $200 or so to be able to download $5 games they could find for free on the internet? For that matter, how are casual gamers going to even know about all the casual games available, since they're not in stores and casual gamers don't make a habit of going to gaming websites?

XBox Live Arcade is meant for the casual gamer who lives with a hardcore gamer who bought the system. The Wii, on the other hand, is attractive enough for casual gamers to actually buy themselves, instead of just playing their family member/roommate/whoever's system. That's because the Wii comes with a casual game that is unique and fun and not something you can get elsewhere. I can play Zuma or a clone for free at about 80 different websites, so why the hell would I buy an XBox to play it? Unless something major changes, I don't see the 360 or the PS3 ever being really attractive to casual gamers. But, that's ok. Not every system has to satisfy every gamer.

What remakes? I'd love to get some Mario or Zelda remakes, but since Mario All Stars on the SNES, I have seen none. You're kidding, right?

The first Zelda, Zelda 2, and A Link to the Past were remade on GBA, and Ocarina of Time was remade on Gamecube. Then, they re-remade Ocarina, Zelda, and Zelda 2 along with Majora's Mask on the Gamecube. Then, we got those re-remade, again, on Wii's Virtual Console.

Mario? Well, SMB was remade on GB Color, and then re-remade on GBA. SMB 2, SMB 3, and SMW all got their remake glory on GBA, while Super Mario 64 got its on DS. Now, do I have to go through the VC remakes and the spinoffs' remakes, or will you just accept as fact that Nintendo makes a lot of remakes?

Playing said level single player or against bots (as is the case with platformers like mario) is entirely pointless, unless it is to familiarize yourself with the level in order to "pwn some n00bs" at a later date. Not everyone thinks the same as you. I personally like single player games, and it's more about improving my skills and exploring and seeing the storyline and having fun, without comparing myself to other people. Pwning some n00bs is only entertaining for so long. Even when I'm playing with other people, it's only fun with people I know and not with some random people on the net. Nintendo markets their products to people like me, while other companies market to other people. Since Nintendo is doing rather well for themselves (with the Wii almost caught up to the 360 in sales despite the 360 having a year's head start, and the DS selling better than anything), I don't think they've made a bad choice in the market they're aiming at. You might be disappointed that Nintendo isn't catering to you by including online play so you can pwn some n00bs, but they're doing just fine without that so complaining about it is as effective as it would be for me to say that Microsoft sucks because they don't make games like Harvest Moon and WarioWare.

It's hard when you have a lot of machines and a penny-pinching CFO who doesn't have to use the crap machines to get them upgrade.

If there was a 'Firefox Life' I'd love to install it on all the computers. Even though it wouldn't fix all the problems, it would be something. And no, Opera really isn't an option because it's too different from IE. Firefox looks enough like IE6 that I don't have to spend much time showing it to people before they can use it, but I don't want to spend my time dealing with all the inane questions about Opera's interface that I would get.

So my flash, mp3, avi, etc "just work", without stupid scary dialog boxes telling you you're committing a crime. I used to use Ubuntu, and I'd either use EasyUbuntu or apt-get to install codecs, and they never gave me scary legalese. Really, I think this dialog box thing is isolated to Feisty, not Linux in general or even Ubuntu either. As for the issue of legality, it's stupid to think that if you had a computer full of legally-bought and licensed media that you'd be committing a crime by playing them. I don't follow stupid laws, and if these stupid laws start getting enforced and people are sued or arrested for watching their DVD on a Linux box then it's time for the revolution. You're comparing a PS2 Final Fantasy to Zeldas that are so old the newest were made for the Game Boy Color (Seasons and Ages were GBC, not GBA. Link's Awakening was for the B&W GB, though you might mean A Link to the Past). Does that seem like a fair comparison to you? Especially since your pluses for FFX involve a giant world with a complex, intricate storyline and being able to hit for 65,000 damage. You know, the Final Fantasies on the SNES had a limit of 8 letters for names, and they didn't even TRY to put an FF on the GBC. The 2d Zeldas are completely different from the 3d ones, in terms of gameplay, puzzles, storyline complexity, everything. You can't judge the whole series unless you've played at least one of the 3d ones (and don't make the one be Wind Waker. And if the one is Majora's Mask, remember than not all of them are as depressing and weird. In other words, compare FFX to Ocarina or Twilight). If you really don't want to bother playing more Zeldas, you could play FFIV and compare that to A Link to the Past (assuming that's what you meant by Link's Awakening since you put (SNES) next to it). But really, FFX is just not comparable to the Game Boy Zeldas. Really, what would you think if someone said that Zelda was better than Final Fantasy because Twilight Princess is much more complex than FFII?
