    with this, I'd like to frankenstein a cheap-ass casio keyboard to be a VST host, remove all the general midi controls and printing on the case, and replace with a knob controller...

    damn. why aren't people selling this. (or better yet, selling a DIY kit)...
    I really hope to see DIY projects like this come on line with these little PCs...

    ok, you know how people build MAME cabinets?

    Ok, you know how there are VST software synths, many of which emulate real hardware, and do a great job of it?

    ok... merge these ideas...
    make tiny boxes the size of a TB303 or so, with MIDI knobs and buttons mounted on the top with a tiny PC running only a dedicated VST on the inside...

    I imagine you could design a box that would run several different VSTs, selectable from the outside...

    Add a 3" LCD screen, and kickass.

    ok... someone make this into a DIY project so I can build one. yeah, i'm that lazy.

    for example, lots of satellite customers will move to cable to use cablecards with the tivo S3... :)
    especially now that directv has dropped tivo, the best Tivo set top box now is the TivoS3...

    dogs (and most animals) have feelings because that's how they evolved

    that's the way they are, and so we have to work within this paradigm...
    now... if you want to make robots hurt, go ahead and program them to hurt, so we can kick them and make them feel bad...

    so what's more unethical. giving feeling to silicon and metal, or kicking silicon and metal...

    what matters is how much profit each company makes.

    i.e. if Sony's taking a loss on each overpriced console, they make no money. While Nintendo with last gen tech (Wii's a souped up gamecube) will probably make a large profit...

    (speculation of course, I haven't looked at either company's revenue reports)..

    Then there's the issue of who's more fun, and who will have a larger installbase... Again, PS3 didn't deliver many units so they probably wont be very profitable to themselves or publishers next year. Which hurts them in many areas... I also heard GTA will be on x360, so that's another reason not to need a PS3...

    Wii is a cool, but underpowered machine.
    which is ok, because devs focus on gameplay, not shiny...
    Making this console really fun.

    PS3 is slower than x360 (GPU specs.) and is way overpriced, and lacks rumble.
    PS3 has bad games (for now). With graphics that are worse than x360 (when comparing same games).
    PS3 is cool because of linux, but doesn't really have a game dev SDK for homebrew devs...
    Sony's controllers are exactly the same as PS2 controllers - BUT - feel cheap and lightweight, and lack rumble. The tacked-on and flimsy USB port looks bad too.

    x360 is pretty cool, has a homebrew game SDK (called XNA), and is easy to develop for (relative to the PS3 - which is very difficult to develop for). They actually got the controllers right this time, and out of the 3 I believe are the best dual stick controller (Sony used to have the coolest controllers back when it was PS2 vs XBOX, though I know some people even liked those huge XBOX controllers, weirdos... :)).

    except that hard core gamers should not get the PS3, because it's GPU is actually _slower_ than the x360...

    and because there's no rumble (i still can't believe sony left this off).
    boycott the ps3 until they add rumble back on!

    can't we solve this by narrowing the types of robots we build to those that don't feel?
    don't add "pain" sensors. or if we do, don't let those sensors create negative emotion in the brain...

    just don't create a robot that needs rights, and you'll be fine...
    keep them simple state machines...

    the problem with this statement is that the bible says many many things, many which contradict each other.

    there's love. sure...

    there's also a lot of intolerance (do we hate gays or love them... do we kill nonbelievers or reach out to them..)

    just saying your statement, while i get what you're saying, isn't all that solid...
    you should reword it to "A progressive Christian is someone who does what the good parts of the Bible says to do: "

    which of course means picking and choosing and doing the completely arbitrary thing (we can't trust everyone to pick and choose the same thing, cause frankly some of us are nutjobs)...

    you have a better example of geek news?

    it's newsworthy because out of the millions of kids, this kid got in the WSJ... and it's entertaining to watch... and geeky because it's not played like a "real" musician (in real time)... and compared to many music apps, flstudio's pretty geeky (though not the geeky-est, i.e. i'd put buzz, renoise, modplugtracker, as more geeky, cubase, sonar, nuendo, abelton, sibelius as much less nerdy... on the scale of apps fl's stong on the programming side (step sequencers! woo), though in a very intuitive nice way (still has pianorolls and all the other really awesome things the others have - except notation of course)...)

    sorry, i ramble.

    fruity is still pretty cheap for the base version.
    $100 USD cheap!

    then you can add on as you need to (or add on your own external non-fruity VSTs)

    fruity's good stuff. very scalable.
    you can bang out very simple things with minimal mouse clicks.
    or
    arrange very complex things.
    the app scales very very well.
    which i find to match my own work style and creativity well...
    (because of this scalability, FL doesn't get in the way of creativity, this is _killer_)

    I wont buy the PS3 since it doesnt have rumble now...
    that combined with lack luster launch titles (ridge racer is the best???).
    and the high price...

    I'd take a Wii any day over the ps3...
    xbox just did everything right this time.
    i used to love ps2.
    but they just screwed up the controller this time.

    (from above), that said, rumble as it is today, is a poor (or low res?) method of force feedback.

    but... some is better than none.

    i.e. in ICO, whack a wall with a stick, and you feel the hit in your controller. now do it without rumble. it feels dead, like swiping through vapor...

    some games use rumble incorrectly of course. so make sure you're playing a good representation before you complain or advocate rumble is better left off the ps3.
