Yea, because all those things like algorithms, O notation, principles of optimization, etc, have all changed completely and totally in the past 12 years!

Zing Perhaps you'd have a better appreciation of what you don't know if you took the time to learn about the depth of knowledge that exists in a CS course. A PDA is a satalite computing device. You use it for quick updates and little else, typically. Its major use is that you can pull it out quickly from a pocket and check your contacts, todo list, and more! On my Palm, for example, I can pull out the application Due Yesterday and check my GPA in all my classes, what assignments are due, etc.

People may say, "hey, why use a Palm when you can use a cell phone or laptop?"

I also have a cell phone that claims to have PDA support. Unless you own a P800 or a P900, the interface on a cellphone is too clunky. Graffiti or the recognizer on a PocketPC will beat the shit out of the tap entry methods that cellphones use. The major cons of the cellphone are that the interface is crap, there isn't a large library of extension software, and it's not easy to sync with my PC.

The cons of a laptop are just as serious. First, they cost about 3-4x the price of even the most fancy 500$ Palm units with built in cameras. They don't really fit in my pocket, either. Even if they could, chances are I wouldn't be able to whip it out and hit a button and have the unit power up in less than 1 second like a Palm does. I'm always having to use a large physical keyboard, even if I'm not seated at a desk or table with a laptop. And chances are I'll have to deal with Windows, unless Apple starts making the units, as Linux doesn't tend to work on a laptop without much messing around. For all the effort, I'd rather have the smaller unit which costs less and Just Works (TM).

Plus, with Bluetooth, my Palm can sync its contacts with the cellphone, control it for outgoing dialing, use it for sending SMS, etc, while it's in my pocket. The PDA interface is much more flexible and has a much larger screen real estate, so it's like I've upgraded my phone without making it into something the size of a brick!

So why choose something that doesn't have these size, speed, and cost benefits? I don't get it.

You begin to see that it's just the matter that PC gaming is expensive in time and money. When you stop using your PC for gaming, you'll find it'll take a good 4 years before your computer is "too slow" and you upgrade for a fraction of the cost. Remember that while the addage, "if everyone drove these cars, the price of these cars fuel would skyrocket" is true, it ignorse the fact that by having easily substitable goods, you change the price elasticity of demand. Coke and Pepsi share similar prices because Coke knows that if they double their prices, people will just buy Pepsi.

So while there might be a bit of an increase in the price of diesel or biodiesel, the price of gasoline would be affected as well because we would consume less of it. The more alternatives you have for an activity, the more in touch with reality their pricing is. Take CDs -- their pricing should be dropping because DVDs and video games are (bang for the buck) much more effective. However, because the RIAA is ignorant, they're trying to use price fixing. Naturally, this isn't working as the price elasticity for that good has been increasing in the past few years :)

When people trade in a game that at 5$, and the store sells it for 20$, they're making a healthy profit. Even if the game companies go ahead and decide to drop prices of their new games by 1/3rd, the used stores can still absorb that easily because they're paying about 60% to as low as 2% of the final price of a used game to take it in.

What's worse, you've suddenly made used game trade ins more valuable because they can get more new games or used games for the same amount of trade ins!

Natuarally, this is why providers are trying to move to a model where you don't own the content (online). I don't like that either. There are still game companies out there, though, that can make games that are worth enough that I'll hang on to them after I beat them, even if they have limited replayability (like Beyond Good and Evil, or Deus Ex: TIW).

Oh-fucking-wait, it's outselling the PS2 on its own merits!

I really wish people would grow up and realize that Nintendo is inovating, not trying to sell you a 99$ USD controller. The GBA is not a high-margin device, that's the software's job. That's why companies are always cutting hardware prices. People just try to justify anything they don't like by making it a part of some EVIL CORPORATE PLOT (TM) to SELL MORE EVIL or some such.

I switched from one provider to another, but has having troubles with it as my day job kept interfering with getting the network going (I was working 10 hour days and always burnt out), so Rusty moved that away too.

At that point, the only thing I had on K5 has my account, which is still there. I revised the FAQ a little, and checked into some of the new admin stuff (abuse reporting and handling), but the site content itself went downhill around the same time.

It's funny.. I run my own site, and have been doing this and that there in my spare time (right now I'm back in university and working on top of it, so this time is little), and nothing I've ever mentioned on it in 5 years of updates has ever gotten me in trouble, but one diary entry on K5 3 years ago got me thrown out of a computer programming contest run by some religious freaks.

If you happened to be a person who paid for it, maybe you paid in a little more because you weren't sure. It took the remaining 2 years for all this to sort itself out.

Once it became about political speech that never really went anywhere (I'm not talking about interesting projects, like freenet, I'm talking about the people who wanted to protest, but never did outside of Kuro5hin), it was officially dead. Slashdot avoids this by having stricter control over the stories, but it also lacks the various tools that allowed users to find each other. I think that's part of what kept K5 going so long.

I'm not sure what will be the solution of a social site where people can post interesting things to a wider audience, and still managed to make friends and such. Livejournal seems to be a good example of this situation (it serves the purpose for me), but there isn't really an easy digest method that allows you to get into it -- you pretty much have to know someone using it, or sift through thousands of random, shitty journals before you find any of the social groups that are interesting.
