I was scrolling down just for fun to see when comments would relate to TFA. It looks like we're at ~50.
It seems slashdot is about as efficient and on topic as a group of government workers. It's much more fun to bash large computer companies' code than discuss mundane state civil code.
We had a "free" wifi rollout in our small community of Hermosa Beach but it has stalled recently. The mayor announced the plan with great fanfare and lots of controversy 4 years ago. It has been a long, slow and painful process and only covers about 20% of city residents. Supposedly the ~ $150k costs would be paid with advertising - the location and specifics of this advertising were never clearly documented.
Limited and unreliable access is only available in the main business district. This project has garnered the city a lot of publicity, and with a bit more support and leadership it could still be a success someday

For those of you who missed the above reference, immediately drop what you are doing, sit back in your chair and watch this 4 minutes of awesomeness. They just don't make them like they used to.
This video about the secret history of silicon valley explains some of the technology behind electronic warfare, radar imaging, and secret air force planes. The content relevant to this article appears around the 30min mark.
E.T. believers will find nothing interesting, however military computer geeks will find it orgasmic.
Remember, because of lawyers, common courtesy is dead. For example, you can no longer apologize at the scene of a car accident that's your fault, because then you might be sued.
Yeah, god forbid admitting liability should...make you liable.
Offering condolences and help does not mean you caused a problem, it makes you a nice person an helps the world.

This article is based on an extremely small set of sample data contributed by anonymous users.
The conclusions shouldn't even be used even for entertainment purposes. Alas the mob has spoken (at least 200 so far)
Seriously, when it comes to the comfort of your rear end can you really put a price at the bottom[sic] of your list?
My chair cost less than $400 but look what you can get for 65k
ancient Egyptians, a little known fact is that they actually had a phonetic set,
Britney Spears definintely has a phonetic set. Her singing isn't bad either.
Seriously, to see what people care about compare real news websites to celebrity gossip sites - the latter beats the former by several orders of magnitude, and most gossip sites get more comments than/. articles
It's quite clear what kind of news people want, and nothing short of censorship will slow the flow of drivel that pretends to be news.
sorry: computer vendor. sheesh
MS should be an honorary computer manufacturer by proxy, as they dictate what hardware is created and sold by the Dell's of the world.
All the major computer manufacturers are listed...with one notable exception: Microsoft. MS did not have their domain name while its competitors did. Who said Microsoft nearly missed the internet?
I love reading different newspapers to see which articles are printed and how they are written. I enjoy reading the LA times daily, but I wonder what this story would look like if it was printed in the Salt Lake Tribune.
Why not have the Fire and Police Dept provide services based on the victim's ability to pay? Because that's not the way we do things...
Actually, this is the way things are done. Wealthy communities have more police and firefighters per capita than less affluent communities. Try driving around Beverly Hills or Bel Air and you will find a low population density and copious public resources.
So no one likes him and everyone claims he is a troll. The reality is his mild sensationalism is as fascinating to watch as any disaster. Controversy is by definition news.
Spreading news is not spreading the most important issues of the day, merely the most controversial or disastrous.
The ultimate irony is Microsoft helping expose the tyrannies of untouchables in government and providing a true level of transparency. Combine total MS vendor lock in with data archiving and tech-ignorant workers and you have a solution that, in this instance, has given the people actual real information. Much like Nixon did himself in through a tape recorder, the Bush administration is doing the same thing, aided by Microsoft software.
This would not have happened if presidential staffers were using Linux.
The abuse of Wikipedia is far and wide and widely reported. As a result many universities are banning its use in class. The general reliance on Wikipedia for factual information is staggering - just because its easy to search doesn't mean it is accurate information.
Instead of the abusive Turnitin service, universities should simply scan papers against the Wikipedia database and this would find 90% of all plagarism.
It seems that SCO and groups that backed them (Microsoft) achieved their objective. Much like a war in someone else's country, you don't have to 'win' to achieve your goals. The goal of SCO was to delay implementation of Linux by installing the fear of massive litigation into potential Linux IT purchases. For SCO/MS to win, all they needed to do was stall. The business world must move forward, even if Linux is tied up in courts.
SCO put enough fear into huge corporations such as SUN, HP and major web hosting companies such as ev1 that Linux adoption was hobbled for a time. As in war, the pawns (SCO) have finally been taken out, and the Queen (Microsoft) is still in a safe position.
There is a good laymans explanation of the history of genetically modified seeds in the book Omnivore's Dilemma. Most farmers are more knowledgable of GM seeds than you might expect, and deeply resent their dependence on seed companies such as Monsanto. However, agriculture is a business and the bottom line is the yield on your crops. With low yield the farmer may not be able to pay for basic necessities, and GM seeds virtually guarantee higher yields. So despite the farmers dislike of Monsanto (and the USDA) most choose GM seeds, just like many of us work for bosses we can't stand.
Albany (ny state capital) is not very far from Armonk (IBM HQ). IBM would love to have more of the high end server market.
But is he sorry about the slashdots as well?

Please share your good news with New Orleans, Houston and Southern Florida and tell them it's always a safe place to live.
Nothing wrong with this, but disclosure would be nice.
anyone know the cost of this new system that will soon be taking our money? these "known issues" were first publicised in 2005 - the same time the IRS made a $200 million dollar error. http://www.usatoday.com/printedition/news/20061205/1a_cover05.art.htm
