We had a "free" wifi rollout in our small community of Hermosa Beach but it has stalled recently. The mayor announced the plan with great fanfare and lots of controversy 4 years ago. It has been a long, slow and painful process and only covers about 20% of city residents. Supposedly the ~ $150k costs would be paid with advertising - the location and specifics of this advertising were never clearly documented.

Limited and unreliable access is only available in the main business district. This project has garnered the city a lot of publicity, and with a bit more support and leadership it could still be a success someday http://wifihermosabeach.com/access.php

It seems that SCO and groups that backed them (Microsoft) achieved their objective. Much like a war in someone else's country, you don't have to 'win' to achieve your goals. The goal of SCO was to delay implementation of Linux by installing the fear of massive litigation into potential Linux IT purchases. For SCO/MS to win, all they needed to do was stall. The business world must move forward, even if Linux is tied up in courts.

SCO put enough fear into huge corporations such as SUN, HP and major web hosting companies such as ev1 that Linux adoption was hobbled for a time. As in war, the pawns (SCO) have finally been taken out, and the Queen (Microsoft) is still in a safe position.

  25. Re:Terminator technology. on Genetically Modified Maize Is Toxic — Greenpeace · · Score: 1
There is a good laymans explanation of the history of genetically modified seeds in the book Omnivore's Dilemma. Most farmers are more knowledgable of GM seeds than you might expect, and deeply resent their dependence on seed companies such as Monsanto. However, agriculture is a business and the bottom line is the yield on your crops. With low yield the farmer may not be able to pay for basic necessities, and GM seeds virtually guarantee higher yields. So despite the farmers dislike of Monsanto (and the USDA) most choose GM seeds, just like many of us work for bosses we can't stand.
