  5. The real danger on Beyond An Open Source Java · · Score: 2, Insightful
Sun would not be able to incorporate changes made under the GPL into their corporate version

I call bullshit on this. If Sun released a GPL'ed version of Java, as they own the copyright to it, they can include whatever changes they made in their GPL'ed version into their own commercial version. On top of that, as they own the copyright to the name "Java", they could set the standards (as they already do) where if implementations did not conform to their standard, then the implementations could not be called "Java".

The real danger, which until now fortunately has been avoided, is when developers are presented with the choice of either having to open their source code when using the GPL Java, or paying Sun a fee for using the commercial Java. How can this be considered more "free" than the current situation where you can do what you please with your own software? If you want to GPL your software, go ahead. If you want to keep it closed, you are free to do so.

Currently as far as I understand you can implement Java any way you wish, as long as it conforms to Sun's standards. Isnt this what the OSS community has been calling for? Open standards? This appears to present us with both the advantages of OSS and commercial software. A central controlling body for the standard, with the openness to implement how anyone sees fit.

Unfortunately until graphics artists learn Perl or C, which is not likely to happen...ever, this will not exactly be a good selling point for them. Its a bit like trying to convince them they should be using Linux instead of a Mac because they can view the source code. They make their money from designing graphic art, not coding.

Someone with maybe one or two employees cannot afford a dedicated DBA just so their database can be normalized. I suppose they also should have on staff a dedicated sys admin as well, as their network will be a kludge? For a very small business which is just breaking even, Access gives them the opportunity to get a simple database up and running for their basic purposes. Once they have the money to hire a hundred employees, then chances are they need to upgrade to something bigger and more reliable than Access anyway.

I take it that you have never run a small business yourself. You need a damn good reason for each cent spent, and hiring a DBA (even a uni student) to design / administer your database is just not worth the money spent when a cheap kludge can be developed

Im not addressing this exact example, but quite often when something goes against a company the share price will actually rise instead of the expected fall. This is quite often due to the market pricing in the bad news into the share price.

Take your above example about Ford brakes failing. When the rumour of Ford brakes failing first comes out is when the price will fall, as the market prices it in. Then when its confirmed, the market has already expected this news, so its nothing out of the ordinary. If for example it was suspected the Ford brakes also failed in hot weather as well, the price would rise upon finding they only failed in snow, as it is less negative than what the market expected, and so in a way is positive news.

To bring this back to MSFT, maybe the market has grown to expect security holes in their products, and so this is nothing out of the ordinary and it is business as usual?

In the second demo, get an RMS clone to hold an installfest for the attendees personal computers. Focus the discussion on how you can hack the kernel, and how Linux is free (as in speech)

Take a random sample of the workplace, send half to the first, half to the second and see which group will welcome a migration to Linux in their workplace and which will be scared off thinking that its too hard.
