> 1) 10g was made for linux, all other versions are a "port" FALSE. At least the database itself was "made first" for Solaris and Windows (primary platforms) and everything else after. I think the release dates verify this.
Releases of the database after 10g will probably (but not necessarily) switch from Solaris to Linux as a primary development platform. So you're half correct. This is largely irrelevant anyway since it is the same codebase (one of Oracle's strengths).
> 2) At Oracle you need Larry's signature on the PO if you want to order a Sun box.
I highly doubt this. What is definitely the case is that because of the way things are changing, Sun workstations are no longer necessary for everyone, so they are no longer being given unless there is a specific reason. This is probably the origin of the rumour.
I do work for Oracle, but the information here is publicly available - all I'm doing is verifying.
The "school started back" phrase is probably vernacular. The particular Caribbean dialect I (used to?) speak uses it and it took me a bit before I realized that it wasn't grammatically correct.
I had the same problem. I realized that what I wanted was not really POP3 access but a way to download messages to my local mail spool file.
So I spent a few days whipping up a small perl script which works reasonable well, find it here
It actually works better than POP3 because it lets you d/load messages from different folders separately (even the Bulk folder, which as you noted is *very* useful).
Bottom line, if you're already using linux/*BSD, you might want to check Freshmeat.net before going out and buying or coding something that may not be necessary.
Also feel free to telnet into mars.raketti.net port 1963 a couple hundred times (it returns M the first time and nothing after that).

Just like AudioGalaxy had a huge advantage because of their nice webclient and ease-of-use.
Just like napster had a huge advantage because of their big name, large and growing userbase and indexing servers.
Of course both of the above are gone now. And that is what is going to happen to kazaa very shortly. So although it seems like Kazaa is the biggest for now, it can only be the biggest while it still exists:)
Unless you like using the same program under linux and windows, I am almost certain that gaim for linux provides equivalent functionality to trillian (with the possible exception of file transfers and the extra inclusion of some cool plugins)
Might be worth it for you to give it a try. And I know installing/running it would be easier than installing/running trillian through wine(x).
I am one of the people getting screwed by the cutting off of pop3 access to yahoo's servers. As soon as I get some stuff done I intend to start on a yahoo web mail grabber to download mail from the web interface to a local spool.
Is anyone interested in helping out with this ?
Also more information on the "ten-line Perl script of your own design, to proxy the http connection" would be appreciated since I don't see how you can do authentication and cookies in 10 lines.
>>nice convenient client that does chat (100% legit use), IMs (100% legit use) AND allows one to search for files of any type, without advertising and central servers
Interesting that you should mention this specific list, because every single one of these functions can be coded into an irc client/script !!
For best results this client would have to rely on irc servers have a built in file server and have a carefully designed gui as well as hopefully running on many platforms.
Maybe it's time to reinvent mIRC and X-chat using a common tooolkit (qt?) and dumbed down simplified gui. Is there any reason why this wouldn't work ?
the official linux client - kza still works. I am using it now, but you can't use it to share files:-/
And the reliance on a proprietary protocol and a single server for authentication make it much more vulnerable than the gnutella network will ever be. That alone is reason enough to support gnutella which will win out over time after the RIAA and MPAA take out the kazaa network.
This study varies significantly from the study done in Heise link here . That study concluded that high quality mp3s were indistinguishable from CD recordings !!
I can only conclude that one of these two sets of tests were biased or did something wrong. They can't both be right and the quality of digital recordings can't decrease with time !
Linux settle on the Word 95 or 97.doc format as a standard.
Surely this has been examined enough to provide a reference implementation. And several open source tools and filters already exist. Not to mention that the rest of the (Windows and Mac) world will be already be compatible.
What would be the disadvantages or drawbacks to something like this happening (apart from natural MS negative sentiments) ??
His main and coolest point comes close to the end of the paper. He shows that there is a well-defined mathematical number which is "maximally knowable", completely random and uncompressible.
I'm not sure how powerful or fundamental this result is, but it is definitely a new result and provides a new and neat way to think about things from a computer science point of view !
I had great results using junkbuster....before Mozilla came along. Most of the functionality of junkbuster (and then some) is contained in Mozilla.
Of course the large body of IE users means that there will still be a very large need for this product.
One thing i miss in Mozilla is the ability to use regexps to describe sites to block cookies and images from. But this hasn't been too bad and I am sure it will be there eventually.
What are you doing?
In this post you say that the last one of yr links given above is infected. Now you give it as a regular link without any warning of infection ?

Note also that he was clearly being very sarcastic, which Bill appropriately acknowledged with a polite right-now-i-hate-you forced smile.
So what if he literally manages to use "literally" twice on the same line ;) .
The "school started back" phrase is probably vernacular. The particular Caribbean dialect I (used to?) speak uses it and it took me a bit before I realized that it wasn't grammatically correct.
"back" is being used as a synonym for "again"

Easy enough,
try b=1...log(a) (log using base 2)
trying each b takes constant time. The number of b's is of order log(n) which is linear in the size of n as required.
I'll bite.
In theory, how would one go about using this information ?
All I see is a three letter code associated with each album.

RTFArticle
this can play sorenson video from what i see.
the quicktime for windows plugin plays sorenson videos.
this enables linux users to install the quicktime plugin for windows.
So you go figure it out.
Geez.
All my mod points are gone :-/

Wow !
I thought because they were so small they would advance backwards !!

They're there....
:)
You just can't tell the ddifference
