I thought that RMS referred to GNU/Linux that way because he is still hopeful that HURD will become fully operational, this would give 2 systems GNU/Linux and GNU/HURD.
Both parts are required to make an operating system, GNU provides all the support, bells and whistles whilst Linux and HURD provide a kernel.
What is it that people find so damn difficult to understand about that
I would venture that rather than the fanatics lashing out after the war in Iraq it is the US lashing out after 9/11, this is not entirely unexpected but is a little mis-directed.
As pointed out Islam had a problem with fanatics before 9/11, true followers of Islam, I know some, are very peaceful and respectful people.
Its a shame that the poster posted as AC as this is one of the more intelligent rants that is likely to appear on/.
My first PDA was a Palm III, lasted 7 years of general abuse before finally giving up the ghost. Figured I wouldnt replace as I didnt need it.... 3 days later I'm down Dixons getting a new PDA. Found out that my life revolves around the damn thing sad but true. Bought a Clie cant remember which one; very nice to use, light loads of cool features, and against normal Sony stuff unreliable as hell. 1 week later after 15!! lockups back at Dixons replacing it with a Palm Zire. This turns out to be about the same as a Palm III and covers everything I need.
In the event of a patent claim against a Novell open source product, Novell would respond using the same measures generally used to defend proprietary software products accused of patent infringement. Among other things, Novell would seek to address the claim by identifying prior art that could invalidate the patent; demonstrating that the product does not infringe the patent; redesigning the product to avoid infringement; or pursuing a license with the patent owner.
If the patent is valid and they cannot redesign it then they will license it for *thier* use
In the earlier article is was mentioned that the ??AA could troll round the court system until it managed to find a court that produced the "correct" answer for them, then it would have to go to the Supreme Court for a definitive judgement.
Trouble is there are 50 states that they can do this in at circuit level (and at federal level?) and they can afford it.
Not being from the US I am lothe to make to sweeping a statement but it looks like a minor delay for them
but if you read it it states that some fires have been dated as burning from the Pleistocene era which is the first part of the Quaternary period of geological time, beginning 1.64 million years ago and ending 10,000 years ago. The polar ice caps were extensive and glaciers were abundant during the ice age of this period, and humans evolved into modern Homo sapiens sapiens about 100,000 years ago. ( tiscalli encylopedia I'm not that clever )
On this basis if CO2 and NO will cause global warming and acid rain, we'll need sunblock SPF 500 and stainless steel umbrellas
If your a french journo then yes that is possible, brit yep if you don't reveal source of story to a court it's contempt.
The biggest mistake people make is to forget that a politician lies when thier lips move. This should be the first point of reference for anyone. Proof that you are wrong should not allow you to belive in an "honest politician" they may start that way but rarely if ever end that way.
As a brit we have a 2 1/2 party state, none of them worth pissing on if on fire, the states are not alone.
This type of crap usually skips over the pond to here about 5 - 10 years after its attacked the US. Just out of curiosity, since the INDUCE act would probably force a great deal of companies to change thier manufacturing process', ie move out of the US, not to import, make americans redundant; would this violate the PATRIOT act? Could the bozo,s who legislate and lobbied for it be prosecuted?
don't forget that if SUN actually won the case this would become yet another example of how screwed up the patent system is in the US and then potentially threaten SUN's own revenues from patents it has ownership of.
yea V nice, try this, My wordprocessor knows not how to print a document so it asks my OS to do it for it.
My word processor knows not how to write to the screen so asks the OS to do it, My OS knows not how to write to the screen so asks the device driver.
This kills all software on all machines if taken to the extreme. US you are out of the software business.
Why they moved is no doubt due to the age of the old system, these can only be upgraded and updated so far. The question I would like answered is how long is this system supposed to last. The old system was close on 40 when it was retired, without regular reboots.
The hardware will last 40 years? Doubt that since every reboot stress' the hardware its likely that it will need replacement within 3 - 6 years. HD's will last for years, even decades, as long as you *dont* turn them off. What happens on a reboot, bus reset disks spin down then back up. Try it and listen to yours you may even get to hear the click as they STOP.
PS as an aside will NT5 still be supported in 2040?
Most CPU manufacturers who also produce memory chips bed the next cpu tech level on memory chips first. This gives them experience of production on a slightly easier to produce product.
I think you may find that INTEL already produce 90nm memory chips.
Intel 90nm memory
I can definatly agree with this, worked for DEC in th 80's and a PDP 8 came over from russia ( eventually due to customs ) that had been used in a knitting factory. The refurb included up grading the boards. We washed them in a very mild washing liquid/water solution and then hung them on a washing line (no I am not taking the piss) then did the job. As long as the discrete parts are not live they will survive. As to all the other parts, the floppy and cd will live but the HD's you're stuck with the smell. Time to upgrade those.
Copyright was introduced by an ENGLISH king, say again an ENGLISH king, it was for limited time only but was essentially a granting of power to the holders of that copyright.
The current situation of extending copyright, ( whenever a big corporate body is involved ), is wrong as it does not limit that copyright.
Where does he public domain gain if copyright ia alway extended?
America, I quote that because they are the biggest extenders and I quite like the yanks, don't ask about governments even my own, were the worst for copyright observance when it was a new independant country, and most of the copyrights were British. Now that the majority of copyrights are held by America ( check it out before you flame me ) the government and companies, not the people, are up i arms about it.
It seems that every one has neglected this thing called public domain where all the real people live
except there does happen to be an extention that will run ActiveX on FireFox, it's highly recommended to leave it alone though because it adds lots of IE 'features'
It's not always possible to follow open standards, not all vendors use them, some will "embrace and extend" to lock you into thier "Standard".
And no MS are not the only company to do this, just the biggest.
but they got this bit dead right
September 1995
Are you ready for Windows 95?
"Windows 3 it's not. Windows 95 is brimming with new features, from a redesigned interface to long file names. Click the Start button to launch applications...
"... according to Microsoft, Windows 95 will run on a 386 with 4MB of RAM. Our verdict: don't try this at home."
dunno about the states but if your gf/wife sic has a baby look at the hardware that does the scan, In the UK it was usually amiga based
