  1. Re:Printer Model? on Printers - Are In-Cartridge Printheads Better? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have never had a single issue with my Epson CX5200, never even had to clean the nozzels and it goes through at least one round of ink every month!

That is exactly the reason why. If you use it often, the nozzles will stay clean. The problem starts when you don't print often, like not every week, or sometimes months inbetween a printjob. Then you will need to clean the nozzles often (which costs a lot of ink) or you can simply throw the printer away, because a new nozzle is more expensive then a new printer.
So basically, if you print often, several times a week, an Epson printer is good for you. But if you don't print often, stay away from Epson as far as possible.

[...] it does strike me as odd that someone on /. is advocating the forced charging for a piece of software. Isn't software supposed to be free like the birds?

Yes, but a WMP that's free as in beer isn't free at all. It's more a Lock-in strategy, like Internet Explorer was a lock-in strategy. Btw, if Netscape 5 had come out, and was a good product, Microsoft still made it impossible to charge for it (like Netscape used to charge for commercial use). The hidden cost of Internet Explorer (free with Windows, so they did charge for it) made it hard or impossible to compete.
That Netscape has sucked with version 4, and there was no version 5, doesn't give an excuse for Microsoft's behaviour, those are 2 different issues, which together led to the current situation.
That's the same as it is now, people should make quality competing products, and the monopoly abuse of Microsoft should be restricted. It's not one or the other, it should be both.

I don't understand the first part of your post though... You don't agree with Microsoft having to ask a fair price for their software, thus being less able to abuse their monopoly to build up other monopolies? You think abusing their monopoly is fine, and competitors should just make a better product, and all will be well?
The market is broken now, and absolutely not free. The first priority the EU should have in this case is to have a free market again. Making WMP unfree as in beer would help that case.

Also, no special OEM deals should be allowed, so OEM's and consumers are "forced" to choose with price and quality in mind, instead of blindly going for the MS option.

I think this is the right way to do it. Ofcourse you can prefer to do it different, but this way is the clean way. If you really feel you have good reasons to leave, then just say it like that. If there were situations or events that directly led to wanting you to leave, you should tell about them.
Being an asshole when you leave just gives them an excuse to lose respect for you and dismiss any critical comments of you. Being honest about it should gain you respect. If not from your boss then from your co-workers or simply from yourself.

I only have the 3 free community iso's here, and they include apache, mysql, postgresql, samba, and I would be surprised if they would not be on official powerpack, but you never know.
Kolab isn't on the community release, also not on the 4th cd of it. You can still get it from a community or official mirror though, it's part of that.

I think you are misinformed in some way. What webpage did you read this?

The official release is actually community with updates, and carries the same. If you have the commercial version (from club, mandrakestore or boxed set) it also includes ati and nvidia drivers, and some other commercial software. So if you are a silver member, you should be able to put your hands on these commercial cd's of the official release.

He often ran into machines that had an uptime of 3 years. I forgot what systems were used at Telco's. I would assume UnixWare, because of the AT&T heritage, but I remember he mentioned OpenServer as well for that.
I also remember he said it was a nightmare to set up an NC with OpenServer.
He also set up some Tarantella machines while working at old SCO, I believe that's where a lot of those NC terminals came into use (Oh, flaky memory...).

He later worked for a support company that was started by another SCO engineer, and they were moving to Linux and mostly FreeBSD for new installs, and NC systems were much easier to setup with those operating systems (TinyBSD).
There he also did a lot of support for small and big offices, where mailservers and firewalls had to be built and supported. A lot of SCO machinery is being used there as well (I assume mailservers, not firewalls).

Your best bet is to ask for support on the Sane mailinglist at http://www.mostang.com/sane which is often very helpfull.
What's happening at your end, is that sane-find-scanner is a kernel utility, it can find the scanner that is being recognised by your kernel, for example a scsi or usb device. The scanimage tool uses the real Sane drivers to find a supported scanner. So in essence, your kernel finds your scanner, but for some reason the Sane libraries don't find a supported scanner. I'm definitely no Mac guru, but probably you have to tell Sane what device to look for, or which Sane driver to use. Or maybe enable/disable an option in your driver config. Or maybe rn the driver with debugging options. Anyway, your best bet is imo the Sane mailinglist for this. Slashdot is not the place to ask for this kind of support.
