Health care is definitely the most up-and-coming thing there is, I think, especially with the massive wave of aging baby boomers who tend to have quite a bit to spend. ...my parents were always poor, but managed to stay _just_ above the poverty line so did not always qualify for such programs. The poverty line in the United States is set entirely too low, and hasn't really been increased in a number of years. Sociologists have been remarking on this - it's one reason why there are a lot of people struggling to survive, and one reason why it's better sometimes to go on welfare than to work - you'll actually eat better. When you're holding a minimum wage job (or two) and trying to support three kids as my parents did, it turns into a near-impossibility, especially if you make that few hundred dollars more than the poverty cutoff.

If you're able to get a job paying significantly more than minimum wage, you're probably fine, but neither one of my parents had more than a high school education, and my mom never finished 7th grade. McDonalds doesn't really pay that well if you're not a manager, and even then I've heard horror stories.
