  1. Re:Car thieves have it all wrong.... on Is Hacking Cars a Thing of the Past? · · Score: 1

Many different car alarm manufacturers have warranties that cover paying your insurance deductible in the instance of theft, break-in, etc. Aside from the convience of keyless entry and remote window control, this is the biggest advantage. Anti-theft is a joke, if someone wants the car bad enough they are going to take it.

An ethernet connection is certainly a "gaming messiah". I don't exactly feel like tying up my phone line so I can play POD Speedzone or Phantasy Star Online considering I have a great broadband connection at home. Sega got the idea right with the Broadband Adapater for the DC, but they had the mentality "Well, this game doesn't NEED broadband, so why should it support it?" That stopped me from playing lots of online games because I simply refuse to get a dialup account, and I refuse to tie up my phone line to do it.

  3. Re:A PS2 with different games on XBox Released · · Score: 1

This is fine until you try and play something like "House of the Dead" with the light gun... Scan doubling effectively makes the gun useless, as the screen updates slower than it would otherwise.

  4. Re:Why dedicated games machines? on Gamecube Hits US Early · · Score: 1

Another good reason is the hardware alone. There's no wierdness because I have a different video card than the developers used.

For example: I had a Matrox G450 card I was quite happy with. Then I bought "Black & White" - this game has all kinds of problems with textures on a G450, so I ended up shelling out the $$$ for a Nvidia GeForce2. If I were playing on a console, this would not have happened.

  5. Re:Protests on MS Settlement: Six States (And Samba) Say "Stop!" · · Score: 1

I find this solution to be a bit farfetched:

    1. Require open standards? That's like telling Coke they need to open up their formula for their trademark beverage so that Pepsi and RC can compete more fairly.

    2. Divesting Xbox right now would put them out of business - they haven't sold anything yet. Microsoft does have a habit of divesting companies over time - take Expedia for example.

    2. What were the legal fines against AT&T and Standard Oil? I would imagine those establish precendent here.

At this point, this is an entirely religious "debate" - and we all know how those turn out.

    > Why aren't people gathered around the country to protest this obvious miscarriage of justice?

A real miscarriage of justice is the murders and such that walk free every day - why don't we spend more time and effort punishing those injustices?

Well, with that argument, you can go spend $299 on WindowsXP Pro to run your free plugins, or spend $19.95 for your free OS to run the free plugins.

Software like this brings us closer to the reality of Linux becoming a desktop OS, and I'm all for that.

People seem to be blowing this out of proportion, IMHO.

How often do you hand your credit card to a server at a restauraunt? A store? Over the phone to pay for something? Are you forgetting that your credit card number can easily be stolen that way? Most receipts from purchases have your credit card number on them. Do you shred / burn them to stop someone from getting your CC #?

If you MUST have a Mandrake CD at 2 am, it's probably quicker to drive to your local Walmart and shell out some $$$ than it is to download it over your DSL/cable/modem/whatever... ISO images aren't exactly small.

Spending money to support development of your favorite distro isn't a bad idea either.

You're absolutely right, GSM location based services can track you to a cell, but it doesn't do E911 services a lot of good. AFAIK, a cell site has a range of 14 miles. So, if you're broken down or dying somewhere, they can only track you so far. Same goes for when you're lost. How useful is that?

I would imagine that Apple will be courting those FreeBSD developers now. I think it would be in Apple's best interest, since OS-X uses a BSD kernel.

While I believe this is certainly unfortunate, I seriously doubt it's the end of FreeBSD.

  13. Re:Joe Public doesn't care. on Still More 'Copy Protected' CDs · · Score: 0

Yes, but how many CDs does the average "Joe Public" purchase in a year?

I purchase approximately 5-6 CDs a month, for approximately 60-72 CDs a year. I don't like to actually haul the CDs to work and in my car, that's why I have an MP3 deck in my car. I burn CDs of the music I have purchased (this does not violate fair use, IMHO) to listen to in my car and at work.

This copy protection system "breaks" the CDs if you use them as I do. To my mother, she could care less. That's why it is our responsibility (IMHO) to help educate the average "Joe Public" on this issue.

Maybe if the record companies start seeing a decline in sales, they'll get a clue.
