When you glance at the screenshot, antialiased fonts look very pretty. When you try to read a huge amount of text on screen (like while editing/browsing long pages etc.) after a while all that smoothing makes your brain hurt. Its because the high-res part of our perceptual system (people including myself think; I study human vision) likes crispy stuff to look at, and too much smoothing is stressful because the the visual system has to continuously 'deblur' the text while processing it.. therefore, its a pain to read a lot of diffuse text. kind of like looking at models photographed using soft-focus lens vs. watching an out of focus projected movie..

Now that put it that way, sure. Usually on my LCD (its a nice high-res IBM laptop screen that I had to walk the street to pay for), with no smoothing and full hinting, stuff looks good. I just (finally!) installed the Debian packages x-ttcidfont-conf, defoma (already there) and msttcorefonts, and stuff has started to look way better.. Thanks for pointing this out, made me take a good look at the font system perhaps for the first time in four years. Someone mod parent up, I can't mod and post :-)

I don't think its as simple as that. Billy G. has been investing relatively large amounts of money at all levels in India including through his foundation to push his software. I wonder what Stallman invested in India on the other hand. Maybe a free membership of FSF for APJ? I doubt even that..

Fact of the matter is, with all kinds of sanctions slapped on the Indians in the recent past due to the Bomb thing, they do recognise the need for self-sufficiency at least for maintenance of existing systems. It would definitely be scary to find a hole in the Navy servers with economic sanctions preventing the download of the latest patch from the US :-)

All this also ties very well with the 'digital divide' (scroll down for a related story posted today on slashdot) thing going full steam: the easiest way to get software to the masses is to make/keep/get it free.. Clearly, the Indian policy makers are smart guys, even disregarding the president.

  13. Re:OT but what about credit card numbers? on Auto Manufacturers Running Out Of Unique IDs · · Score: 1

Out of the usual 16 digits, first 6 determine the bank, card type etc (for Visa, IIRC: 4 for the bank and sometimes digits 5,6 for the card type). So you still have about five times the world population many cards available for each bank including the checksums etc. Also, cars are everywhere, credit cards have not proliferated that much yet, dispite what you might think here in the US. With one-time usage cards, though, there could be a potential problem but IIRC they have expiry dates there. Someone pl. correct me on the last one.

Yep, we do have our own comics. Chacha Chowdhury, Billoo apart from translated stuff like Phantom, Mandrake.. The problem is, the original stuff doesn't have a story line that can hold out for too long. Plus, till recently the quality of graphics was not all that great. Besides, as another reader pointed out here, the brand-name recognition goes a long way, which they are trying to capitalise on here..

With open source, people matter even more than they would at the software giants. Linus disappearing from the scene for a few months would impact the overall progess of the kernel more than say, I don't know, the project lead of Winblows XP disappearing for a few months (or forever! Sorry, nothing personal!). So yeah, it's nice to keep track of him and others :-)

I suppose that also means they will have a say in deciding the different features availble etc. If that's the case with many other countries (and I DON'T know the data. Sorry.), the European one will be more standardised and better equipped for use by more people. Besides, its always good to have redundancy built into such systems, now that everyone depends on them so heavily.
