Well, native Taq polymerase is available from all major suppliers(Invitrogen, Stratagen, QIAGEN, etc), as well as different modified recombinant Taq derivates (NovaTaq, AmpliTaq, MasterTaq) - there's nothing remotely resembling a monopoly here. Of course, several recombinant polymerases are patented (HotStart, AccuPrime System, Platinum Taq) - but these are not as nature made them, but heavily modified and optimized systems.

Wouldn't the dust clog the air jet as well? Electrostatic coating would be more interesting. But there is another problem - the first major dust storm would grind down the surfaces of the solar cells, reducing their transmission and efficiency. One could probably devise a way to prevent that too, but I fear you would quite soon run into weight limitations.

Absolutely right. But you have to blame ESA for focussing their public relations mainly on Beagle. Now everyone is believing the whole mission failed, whereas in reality, the main scientific gain would have stemmed from the orbiter measurements anyhow. The European mission is by no means failed. If anything can get us data about possible water on mars, then it is the penetrating radar of the orbiter.

ok, it is bad style to reply to your own posts, but i have something to add on a more serious note. This may cause problems. In Germany, the police are known to cause artificial traffic jams on highways to stop people trying to get away in their cars. Several police cars occupy all lanes of the highway and start slowing down until a jam occurs. Nice thought... But up to now there were several deaths due to people crashing into the end of the so created traffic jam. And, note, the people affected were not the perps, but totally innocent ones who happend to notice the jam to late. I wonder if the proposed system might lead to similar occurences, which, in my humble opinion, are totally intolerable.
