"Knowing what the military want you to think is fascinating, providied its balanced by the free press"
How can you tell which media is free and which is controlled? You could go by obvious slant (fox news is right wing, guardian is left) but what's to stop them hiring covert AP reporters? Planting seeds in the blogosphere? I mean most people here can barely tell when an article is a slashvertisement, and you want them to constructively form an opinion on foreign policy with even less of a frame of reference? So whenever you are debating a point with someone in this future world, you would be debating the points of a propaganda campagin that invents the truth. Lack of intelligence is better than bad intelligence.
Yeah and if we outlaw spam, then think of the poor spammers! They are just trying to keep their jobs from disapearing. I mean COME ON!
"By the way, if anyone here is in marketing or advertising...kill yourself. Thank you. Just planting seeds, planting seeds is all I'm doing. No joke here, really. Seriously, kill yourself, you have no rationalisation for what you do, you are Satan's little helpers. Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself now. Now, back to the show. Seriously, I know the marketing people: 'There's gonna be a joke comin' up.' There's no fuckin' joke. Suck a tail pipe, hang yourself...borrow a pistol from an NRA buddy, do something...rid the world of your evil fuckin' presence." -Bill Hicks
As right when he said it as true today. And I even have friends in advertising.
Gangstas and cracker suburbanites, I am about to reveal to you a new revelation in the perception of cool! Our new computer vision system trains you to become more "ghetto" looking and dangerous! Simply aim system at yourself and practice your ghetto styles and violent stares! The new force feedback mechanism tells you when you are sufficiently "rude and dirty"! Guaranteed to make you 200% more violent looking or your money back!
"the fact is that most of us are severely unqualified to do much more than post on slashdot."
Perhaps when you graduate highschool and move into the real world, you would understand that IT people are the problem solvers of the world. We are the soldiers of a digital age, armed with our minds, rapier like wits, and superior intellectual powers. We are the gatekeepers that master over the pleebs and serfs - the unclean, unwashed masses that merely plod on through life oblivious to us as we would be to any extra dimensional creatures. Our blood is the oil on the gears which keeps modern society clawing and grinding on. If there were no IT people, the world would devolve into a neolithic anarchy of canabalism , lawlessness and pagan electronics worship. Perhaps you have seen planet of the apes? We are charlton heston crossed with bruce campbell and we are the saviors of mankind.
This internet thing would really suck if everyone agreed with eatchother.
Perhaps telling the girl that shes ugly would have a rallying charge around the people that thought she was pretty and she would be pumped up by it. She could tell her hot sexy 18 year old friends that if they felt rejected and depressed, all they had to do was post naked pictures and it would be an instant pick me up! Nothing like people defending you to make you feel superior. God could you imagine an internet where everyone was nice and polite, said please and thank you in all their posts and actually admitted to being wrong? Where's the fun in that!?!
They aren't actually stealing the election. They are electronically changing data in a voting machine to make one number higher than another. I am sure I could be even more precise about the exact method if I wanted. Stealing, in both cases, is used by ignorant people as a shorthand. So no, you cant steal an election, but you can influence it electronically to your parties benefit. It is just semantics in both cases as nothing is literally being stolen.
"rather than face the discomfort of acknowledging that that some issues simply are black and white, decides to be slippery... and and snarky sounding.. which is BS."
Yeah its also called being funny, being clever and also one of the staples of internet arguing. If someone says something is true, one simply has to try and disprove them. It is a direct challenge. That is what makes arguing on the internet purposeful. As to the original point, sure some things are black and white, but the interesting parts of a discussion are always the grey areas and the things that people havent considered. I believe this poster was just going for that. Everyone holds some firm positions, but that doesnt mean that whats reality for you (or them) is reality for me. Reality is relative - but maybe thats what you are really arguing against.
Not a very smart move there man. You've basically committed to losing your ring finger if your ever in a life and death situation, trapped by your rings.
"To my knowledge the Itunes song is licensed to you, for your use with itunes and Ipods. You arn't buying the song, you're buying a license to use it how they decide you can use it"

Actually I hated that part of the movie too because I believed it to be tacked on by spielbergo. Actually, it wasnt tacked on and that was how kubrick wanted the movie to end, its quite brilliant. The way it was explained to me, was basically that if they had just left him underwater its tragic, but when they give him a brief taste of his mother and then take it away leaving him in a plain white room completely devoid of humanity (who are actually gods to the mecha) for the rest of time - well thats quite a bit more depressing than having the hope or faith to see his mother again that he had before. It had something to do with the robots/mechas loss of spirtuality. Im probably not doing the explanation justice, but when I watched it again with that in mind, the ending was much more kubrickian than I had interpreted it as before. Kubrick would of course have made it more obvious, and theres a pretty good chance that spielbergo didnt understand it well enough to do right.
An edit to this, I have found something kind of explaining it, and yes spielberg fucked it up:
The advanced mechas take sympathy on him, and this is where Kubrick's vision and Spielberg's story diverge, the former being the much stronger ending. In the movie, the mechas are able to clone Monica and bring her back to life for a single day, and they do so, using that stolen lock of hair which Teddy has preserved for so long. David has his perfect day with his mother and at the end of it, falls asleep in her arms, able to dream for the first time. This is where the metaphor falls apart, and where Kubrick's version was so much stronger.
Originally, this is what happened: the advanced mechas were not able to clone Monica and bring her back for a day. All they could do was create a hologram. David finally sees the image of his mother again, thinks he's about to get what he's been seeking, but when he goes to hug her, cannot touch her. All of his efforts to reach God, all of his religious fairy tales, have been a non-existent illusion. Science has tried to show sympathy for faith, but cannot recreate it. Knowledge and belief -- or fact and fairy tale -- are incompatible. The Spielberg message is unnecessarily muddled and doesn't fit what's come before, which is where I think A.I. has its biggest failure, betraying all that has preceded it. The Kubrick ending said it all about everything that had come before, but that's typical of Kubrick. Of course, it doesn't help that Spielberg's design of the advanced mechas look suspiciously like the aliens from the end of Close Encounters and cause audience confusion. In Kubrick's story, the advanced mechas were invisible -- sufficiently evolved man, with no need for gods, were not even comprehensible to those still trapped in the ice of dogma.
Collectivism has caused more human misery than any other idea of the human mind. With every vote I cast and every dollar I give to politicians, I am guided by my desire to see it crushed and swept off the face of the earth. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.
"create public service announcements urging others not to steal movies or music"
Its not stealing, since you are not depriving anyone of the thing. Unless this merit badge is for going into record stores and lifting cds. Somehow I doubt it.
The editors should be more careful with their phraseology.
But I won't throw up and have cold sweats for three days.
And if you quit internet, your brain will get slowly dumber for not having the knowledge that is on the internet. Thats a life long malady. In contrast, heroin addiction may be marred by a week of intense cravings, clawwing your skin off, vomiting etc.. But you wont get dumber for kicking it.
I am trying to make a point. The point is these are all varying levels of the same thing. The power to quit heroin, the internet, anything really is in your mind. If you are weeping for the needle then you aren't serious about giving up. If you were, you would endure the torment. People are very strong and only their own mind can hold them back.
So when people say internet addiction is less of an addiction than heroin I wouldn't be so fast to say that. After all, i am currently living heroin free, and yet could not bring myself to detach from the net. Any addiction can be broken, all you have is people weighing the pros and cons and making conscious choices. Chemicals can change your mind, but its still your mind. Dont blame the substance, blame the individual.
You know whats funny? I've used the same defence for alcoholism and they told me "well if you think alcohol is as important as eating your obviously very sick". Replace alcohol with "internet" and im sure someone would make that point in response to your comment. Its very interesting to me that someone hasnt, which tells me alot about how something has to be a pretty much universally accepted enhancement (internet) in order to be accepted and not defined as an addiction. Many people have bad experiences with alcoholics, but that doesnt make it a disease any more than bad experiences with the internet make it a disease. I wish people sometimes had more perspective.
Well a descussion about us imperialism would not be complete without you scenty.
"Or the way that, rather than spending tons of cache[$] on goods made overseas, that we're just marching in and taking over those economies."
I dont for a second believe that america wouldn't if it could, or thought it could get away with it. The last 50 years are full of examples, which some people have listed above me. Hell if iraq had gone better, the US people might openly support imperialism as a valid foreign policy strategy. But I think that the way the US is imperial in this sense is culturally. Its foisting american culture and american morals on the rest of the world. The drug war, the rise and acceptance of police states justified by the US fueled perception of terrorism, christian fundamentalism, militarism and lax environmentalism - to name a few. Culture is more of a uniting tool than guns will ever be. If you can convince people that america is the land of the free and the best country on earth, they wont fight joining your empire. The problem is the disconnect between statements like; every person is equal in the persuit of liberty, or the right of all people to due process, and the actual policies of the USA. In short, america sends alot of positive messages out, but they generally only apply to americans, and as of late, not even. So tell me why should I trust people who say one thing, and do another? Whoes to say "US interests in space" are the same as me or my countries interests? What if they do clash, default judgement goes to USA? fuck that!
To directly address your point though, the answer is simple. The chinese are making money from corporations like walmart, But the american execs of walmart are making MORE money. That they havent taken over their economies by force is irelevant. They dictate the prices that they will pay, and the chinese slave population is made to work for those wages. They might as well own the country for all the influence they have already. In modern power struggles, the forces need not fire a single shot. That doesn't mean that there is not a master and a slave - an empire and a colony - relationship going on.
"saying that you'll defend your assets in space, or on the open seas, is not "imperialism.""
Pre-emption is not defence it is agression. Considering no one is attacking them, they cannot claim self defence. They arent claiming defence, they are claiming ownership. Space is not an american asset, and america does not own space.
Thats a nice red herring there. I think people are more likely objecting and responding to what is in the summary (and i assume article, I didnt read it, this is/. after all) specifically; "Consistent with this policy, the United States will preserve its rights, capabilities and freedom of action in space... and deny, if necessary, adversaries the use of space capabilities hostile to U.S. national interests."
Now the phrase 'hostile to US national interests' is an agenda and a policy that I would say anyone who is NOT american, would find insulting and agressive. Furthermore, it is also unnessecary language to be using if their meaning was indeed something else, as you claim. Please forgive me if these quotes were made up by the submitter and are not reflected in the actual article.
Also feinging the opressed minority is getting pretty tiring. Please advise your "gallant band of bush lovers" to stop it immediately when you attend next weeks meeting.
Are you likening the rest of the world to a urine soaked derelict? If you are, you can take your cultural/moral superiority and shove it right up some detainee's ass.
I think americans should take a long hard look in a miror before they start calling other countries crazy.
Of course, I thought thats why he kept being posted, to make us all feel more learned in comparison. If he was right about technological changes everyone would be using his stupid keyboard by now.
"So if I want to find a bunch of would-be copyright infringers, or opposition journalists, or whatever, all I need to do is create a file with an enticing name (say, "tiananmen_square.mpg" or "TheLionKing.avi"), fill it with garbage data, and toss it out in a likely place where people will see it and start downloading"
But if the data is NOT a copyrighted work, (its filled with garbage data), then how can they sue you for that? Furthermore, it is them who have made it available! IANAL but that sounds like entrapment to me.
Opposition journalists is obviously a different case, as the government could just come to your house and put two in your head. This is one of those situations that free wireless would be good for.
This post is why slashdot needs a "-1 rambling old guy" mod.
Kids are the same as ever. You just got older. Besides, its not "kids" that dont drink enough tea, its non british people. Put some liquor in that there tea, throw on some '2 many djs' and then we'll talk.
