Yes, but that means you would have to search on that before recieving feeback on the correct spelling, possibly not getting the right results. Goodgle Suggest speeds up the process and gives you feedback on the spelling immediately, thus lessening the amount of time it takes to do your research.

Honestly, I don't think Google Suggest is where this is going to stop. This is a nice demonstration that we can have real-time feedback on web pages and applications, but I'm thinking more about the future and how this small idea may change things on a fairly large scale.

Did anyone else notice that EVERYONE seems to profit here? Besides the end user of course. Microsoft makes bad software and saves money on fixing security holes because they've basically got a captive audience. Advertising companies figure out how to exploit these security holes and generate revenue by throwing computers down the toilet. Anti-Spyware companies profit from getting rid of software exploiting said security holes. Microsoft turns it around fully and purchases Anti-Spyware company for... even more profit!!!

This is why I'm saving up for a PowerMac.

  6. Re:Not a good thing! on Argument Held in $565 mil Microsoft Patent Case · · Score: 1

Maybe that's not such a bad thing. I think software patents are going to be around no matter what. Unfortunately there are just too many people with money to lobby for them who stand to gain from them. Not to mention that I think a really innovative idea deserves the reward of being owned by it's inventor for a time.

My feeling, until shit has come to light, is that we just need to focus on fixing patent law rather than trying to rid ourselves of it. Problems currently arising include really ridiculous patents right? Well, how do we go about fixing that? Maybe we should have people in the decision making process who are actually informed about the things being patented. Also, how long do patents currently last? If I'm not mistaken, the patent system was basically created for a much slower moving world. Things that were invented 50 years ago weren't neccessarily improved on as quickly as technology moves now. That being the case, maybe the patents should be a lot shorter for software. A year maybe?

I'm not a lawyer, I don't know much about patents, so this whole post could be completely off, but these are ideas that are floating in my head right now and I hope they will be of use to somebody.

I have nothing against Abiword, and the fact that there is a native OS X port of it definately sits well with me, but my chief concern at the moment is compatibility; both short and long term. Personally I see OO.o as the most likely to stay around right now. I may be wrong about that, and if anyone has information to the contrary I'm more than willing to listen, but the fact that it is a full office suite which runs on 2.5 of the 3 operating systems that I deal with makes me feel secure in using it.

My logic may be flawed, but hopefully it will help you to understand why some use OO.o.

I have seen antivirus software suffer from a corrupted installation many times on newly formatted clean installations of windows. Often, it won't allow itself to be uninstalled automatically when this happens. This means that either you spend the time and wipe the system again or you figure out how to remove the software manually. Symantec should have made things easier with regards to removing the software manually. There's no reason to consider a sort of second line of defense. If a virus gets past your virus protection software, you can be 90% sure it's going to cripple it at the same time anyway.

The problem no longer lies with OpenOffice being inferior, it's more about people not knowing about it, being afraid to switch, not having the time to waste on switching, etc. As much as I hate to say it, we could use some good marketing goons right about now :)

There's a big difference here though. The people Microsoft is targetting are people who bought PC's with a pirated version of XP on their computer.
