  1. Detectability of "broadcast signals" on Why We're Looking For ET All Wrong · · Score: 1

Signal strength drops by the square of the distance, so if the closest possible earth-like planet with a civilization is say, 5000 light years away (about 5% of the distance across the Milky Way), is a reasonable amount of power, say 1 megawatt, 1 mile from that earth-like planet going to be detectable here on Earth after intersteller dust and gas absorption?

Would Infra-red transmission get through longer distances even better between planets?

I just assume vehicles are going to run me down. I never trust any vehicle with a drive holding a cell phone. I've seen too many people pull right out in front of me with a cellphone and I'm stopped within 3 feet of the car watching them go in front of me obliviously.

Never ride on PCH in California if you have any grey matter left.

Bike trails are the only half way safe method of biking.

Fast road bikes with skinny tires are simply asking for problems from fragile tires to higher speeds. I don't do that.

I do agree with the author that Lance Armstrong influenced people to do aggressive cycling without thinking that Lance only races with other bicyclists going the same direction. I've done aggressive riding and gone down a couple times, but never had a serious injury beyond a scrape. That seriously altered my attitude.

I would expect we already have core samples from the tundra and sea bottoms which cover the last 250,000 years.

That means we have over two complete cycles of the 110,000 year natural glaciation periods.

Given core samples we already have, I want to know whether the core samples show we have even warmer centuries coming, or not?

Providing "60,000 pages of paper copies of emails." is just an excuse to hide the metadata in the emails, which is just, well, criminal.
