Food is a temp sollution as it feeds them once, barely, and after being fed they require being fed again after. It grows dependency on the Western world. Making them independant, giving access to information and education creates independance and in the long run will help them feed themselves, maybe train some doctors engineers and farmers in the long run? Education will be able to provide that, in the long run.

Further, having the 3rd world countries develop, will create an economy to do business with for the Western countries, instead of exploitation.

Ofcourse, now the US has the control to disallow access in a warlike state with any country depending on the GPS tech for warfare or anything really. Which gives them ultimate control.

The US always has been nervous with anyone being able to dominate them or to get from under their control, even if such a move of the EU wouldn't be directly motivated by military purposes (the EU has been going away from an offensive army a long time ago and formed towards defensive and humanistic purposes), but maybe more by independance from US's powers. It's a pure dominating position the US strives to embody it seems. If it'd be looked like that (a military move) the US really should start to do some self-reflecting.

The entire Linux community will weep tears of joy. Linux (or opensource) will gain alot of skilled developers, developers, developers, developers, developers, Linux will gain usability as it would be used in the business and user culture (more time spent in improving the software, making it more usable). Which will result in MS losing grip on the market (and becoming isolated with the incomptabilities) as there would be a solid base of technology developed in Europe (and because it'd be free, spreading over the world).

MS isn't going to let Europe go, it'd be their downfall.

It's nice to have been modded funny, but I was being sarcastic to the Bambi-generation threehuggers who feel their pets deserve more rights then 90% of the human world population cause they're attached to it and personificate animals. It's cute to get as much out of your pet, but animals are still animals and shouldn't get rights as humans or be put above humans.

Research, even on animals, is CRUCIAL before going to testing in humans. But some crazy activists feel a monkey, a dog or mice shouldn't serve as a testobject, yet humans should be thrown at it after "alternative testingmethods" have been employed. I'm not sure, but I can't really see how you could test all facets of drugs without introducing it to a living organism. (and, also as in this case, those signing up for tests like that are mostly drawn by the money. It wouldn't be the first ending up with life-long injuries but having signed own responsability for the monnies.)

I am not advocating animals should be treathed cruely just like that, no living thing should be needlessly tortured. (and neither should any living thing being driven to extinction.) But some people really have to get a grip already when it comes to cuddlyfication cause of their Bambi-trauma, personification of animals in cartoons/movies or cute huggybears.

There is debate wherever fluoride would be a risk to health. Fluoride IS toxic, hence regulation on how much you can put in a tube of toothpaste (overhere at least).

DTT was once considered harmless. People showered in the stuff! Or what about Asbestos? Smoking was once considered harmless and some still do. There are alot of examples like this, as things only get banned when there have been victims.

There has been proven that the levels of industrial toxins in people's bodies are troubling (through packaging of consumergoods etc). I don't have time to find a link to back that up now though.

Isn't it because smoking gives you a false sensation of relief?
I used to smoke quite alot (50 cigs a day, at least), so I'm talking from personal experience...

In *any* stress situation a smoker feels he needs a cigarette to "relax". Stress is elevated above normal levels because one would go into withdrawal and *needs to get a fix* to get stress-relief. Yet the relief would only be limited to the addiction, and the issue causing stress still being unsolved (nicely avoided with the addiction by false percieved "sollution"; smoking doesn't solve your stress.). So when one would face again that issue, after having quit smoking, one would feel the bottled up reaction which could've been mild if not constantly avoided with smoking but by bottling up is "exaggerated" in the sense of the "issue", but not in the issue factored with the times avoided prior.

It required me to handle quite some things when I quit once I got rid of the physical enslavement, but quitting had only positive effect in my life once I handled things I've been avoiding.

My first reaction was about the same; "Millions of western children / students do not have a laptop. Why the effort to get children who even don't have food a laptop?!"

But on the other hand; Western kids have ALOT more opportunities and resources to get educated and create a future. A laptop wont make too much of a difference for the average western kid in order to "make it".
These kids even can't afford paper (in which aspect such a laptop is a great tool for education!) They can even pass on their studymaterial to their siblings, neighbours, whoever doesn't have the ability to go to school. Once they have their laptop - which I believe only needs to be crancked to run - they're set for lenght of their education. You can't help those people by dumping food, and making them dependant, but by educating and making them selfsufficient. (these people are very creative as well. Hook them up on the internet, give them info... and be amazed.)

I for one, applaud this project!
