  1. I was reading about Be the otehr night.. on Practical File System Design with the Be File System · · Score: 1

The reason it died.. Microsoft!! Who bought it? Palm ? I woudl suggest to most everyone with a palm pilot, in protest throw it under a steamroller because Palm sells devices with less processing power than a 386.. Palm figured it would be useful in cleverly designing an intuitive interface..

Anyhow.. I only learned of this last night.. I'm not a Be user.. However it looks like a very interesting and simple to use operating system, and its still available for download..

A newer incarnation or spinoff of Be, not unlike Handspring being a spinoff of palm, is something called Yellowtag's Zeta..

Do a search for it.. evidently they are using the source code of BeOS 5 as a basis for a new environment, not developed by Be.. And there is projects for OpenBeOS.. But those who think of Os's like the Amiga dead, are just naysayers who are confident with what they have and figure others will be too.. I'm a Windows XP user, and I am quite confident with what I have, and everything is really easy, I can't imagine how have BeOS would make it easier.. But if I wanted something like MacOS without purchasing a mac, and have the creative artist centric environment that the Mac's do, what do I do? BeOS is the closest thing to the mac without getting Mac hardware.. You have to admit..

Geeks have no problem using a GUI, but everyone else does.. So naysayers reconsider.. But I, like you naysayers, understand because I use Linux, Windows XP, I've used AmigaOS and MacOS, but have not used BeOS.. I prefer each OS for different things..
Like I can't imagine having an IDE as tight as linux in any other OS. And XP is really nice for games and client applications.. MacOS is terrific for creative oriented work because of the detail given to the particular signficance of usability and the need for a precise result when doing graphcis work. The AmigaOS would be terrific for embedded systems that haven't the bulk of a MMU and other things that are required for a fault tollerant environment with imperfect applications, AmigaOS enforces object oriented design with assembly language, go figure. Each OS has a use and a strength.. And you can't expect one os to have everything.. Its like designing a house that suits everyone's needs.. The only way that could be done is if the house were to be rebuilt million times a second, once for each perceiver.. VMware comes close to offering the multi-faceted capability of a all being OS. A multi-OS.. But the drawback there is many OS's that do what others do on other machines, but much slower.. You will never get around the advantages of one OS over another..

  2. Linux will be the dominant server OS on de Icaza: Rest of World Will Force US Into Linux · · Score: 1

Its no where near a dominant client-side OS.. So people wil continue to use Linux to run servers, but not to interact with servers.. That's been the hope of the geeks, and they completely ignore their needs and thsoe of people who don't know Linux and of the needs of people ont he outside. I know someone licing in Uzbekistan, and there they use Internet Cafes with Windows 98, 2000 and XP.. If they use linux, its subliminal..

And as for open source, I think one has to make a significant effort to use open source packages.. Its easier for programmers.. But without technical support, most users would not bother with it.. They prefer a tech support line and a common social experience among others who use the tools.. Its just that open source packages are so much better in some things and not everything.. I think of open source as a way to standardize processes, a way for everyone to be able to afford to communicate in a common way, and a way for there to be a common platform on which to do things.. But commercial sofwtare development and commercial competition relies of unique proprietary technologies, so that one can develop something the other doesn't, in order to compete..

ITs pretty obvious the reason why businesses base their processes on commercial technologies, one is the consistency of the product (though OSS tends to be more so, if you have programmers to maintain the OSS in-house), another is reliability (but how reliable is it to have to upgrade every year to a compiled proprietary package that may have lost features in the interest of leveraging a different product line?), and some competitors might not be able to afford the package or get the kind of relationship you have with the vendor (however many proprietary connections are facades, mainly the vendor sells a level of access to the hardware or to the proprietary process on a more flexible level, in OSS you can fine tune the capability of the software in proportion to yoru ability).

So the wheels have shifted from the political agendas to the wheels of mental ability. If you can't think in a more structured and efficient way, you won't survive in this world. But that is what we would like to believe, however its not working out this way.. In fact more and more people in support of OSS are unable to find jobs, could this just be an effect of our preference for truth?

  3. Trade Patents for Pants? on de Icaza: Rest of World Will Force US Into Linux · · Score: 1

Thought that was a cute subject line.. Reminiscent of the trade among italians and americans for the
last half century.. I made up the patents part..

Anyhow, the problem in America is the faith in tech, its so much so that the government is bending the rules to allow companies to patent algorithms. To patent an algorithm though, you have to prove that the algorithm is unique, that nobody else's algorithms do what yours do, and you have to prove that it is part of a physical mechanism. Like if you have some software that controlled a tractor, the software would be patentable.. But if no mechanism relies on it as a kind of virtual gear, then it can't be patented..

Now tell me how this is going to effect the open source movement or linux for that matter?

  4. Follwup on Is eBay Worse Than Early Sears Catalogs? · · Score: 1

We called into Sears mower support dept. and one of their workers knows of the problem with the variable speed lever, and he knows its not variable speed, but says "they won't listen to me".. Imagine a drive belt with a pulley that expands the belt by pulling on it.. This is the variable speed.. Any mechanic will tell its not, in fact its obvious.. But in the sales rhetoric they will call it "variable speed".. We asked about the TORO's with the same variable speed drive lever, and he said "yeah that one has the same thing in it".. So Sears lies to its customers..

I wonder if Sears will ever employ a buyer/seller satisfaction statistic to determine which products are worthy of purchasing.. Much less allow these purchases online.. Note that to fix your mower you have to take it to the repair facility, or hire a representative to come out and fix it on site..

The mower was only 300 dollars..

  5. Craftsman isn't hot either on Is eBay Worse Than Early Sears Catalogs? · · Score: 1

We recently purchased a mower from Sears, the variable speed 6.75 Mph mowers with the lever that raises and lowers all wheels, the 3 in 1.. Well it doesn't start but about 4 times out of 10, just makes a wheezing noise, and its brand new.. The variable speed option, isn't variable, its a pully mechanism that merely turns drive on and off.. We've been trying forever to get through to Sears' customer support..

So I guess the concerc that Sears offers more support and better product than Ebay, is a matter of opinion.. I think that home depot probably offers a better mower in thix case, and we are seriously considering returning the mower for a refund.. That is the advantage of Sears over Ebay, but I'm sure its not a value-add they cherish. The advantage of Ebay is to get what you want even if its no longer being made. Sears will only sell you the best most current thing but doubt you will ever be abel to purchase a Sears Atari 2600 compatible video game system from them, on ebay anything is possible.

Remember Ebay is not an auction site, its a sales venue.. Its a bit more like a dynamic bazaar, and what you get is what you get.

There are too many ways to keep hackers out that way. The number one way to hack is from the inside out.. 22. C64 was simple.. on Commodore BBSes Return using the Internet. · · Score: 1

It was just simple, that's why it was popular.
What I didn't like about it at the time was that to access any hardware in it, you had to flip bits in memory, (poke/peek), they were so efficient with rom they chose not to include subroutines for accessing sound and graphics in a user friendly way, like on the Atari's. But you did have more memory to work with, and the sound was better than the dinky Atari's which had nothing but square waveforms to screw with.

The C64 used a 6502, which is said to have been a RISC processor, it was to be used as a I/O controller, but in the C64 it was made to be a cevtral processing unit. In the Apple IIgs the 6502 was used as a I/O controller at 10 Mhz. In the C64 it ran at about .5 Mhz . At the time I would have loved to have a 10 Mhz processor, IBM XT's were selling for 5000 dollars and were about 4.5 Mhz. And the IBM's had a maximum memory limit of a megabyte, which was like a lot of memory in those days. But the IBM's were monotone graphics and had a single voice sound output.. Besides nobody would ever use one to play videogames until FM sound cards and EGA graphics were introduced. But by that time everyone had Amiga's and Atari ST's..

It wasn't until the PC's had windows, and VGA graphics, with soundblasters, that everything switched.. And people started jumping platforms to get the PC.. I got my first PC when In was already in college, about 9 years ago. I had come from a dieing Amiga 3000 with 50 meg HD and 6 megs of ram.

But I think about the days of the C64, about all of the wierd and interesting stuff, and how it was so much fun to experiment with. Like to play with the SID based synthesizer, and to use paint programs.. I once took apart an Atari Joystick, took the IC card with the bubble buttons, and wrote a program in basic to record and playback drum sounds, using the joystick input to record the button presses.. It would have been better to have something like a Simmons drum for input, but they cost thousands of dollars, and MIDI hadn't even been invented yet. I'm sure if I had had some electronics experience, I would have made my own drum kit and used the C64 as a sequencer. The thing that is bizarre about the C64's is that some musicians still use it as a sequencer.. MIDI data doesn't require a whole lot of space so you could still use a C64 to controll a keyboard setup and drum machines..

    Anyhow..

What sun is doing is they are trying to do what Microsoft is doing with Windows with Java. Java has the potential (in their eyes) to be a development and operating platform, and that's why they continue to develop and support it.

I've had this discussion with neonewbite programmers and users, what is the difference between an operating system on a real machine and an object oriented language that works atop a virtual machine? If you look at smalltalk, the language was the operating system. Its just that people have gotten so detached from the concept they think of an operating system as a seperate thing from a executing application, its the same thing.. Applications can be seen as plugins running atop a more massive application that gives the plugins access to the hardware.

So why does Microsoft want to kill Java? If you have the ability to think abstractly you will know why, if you are too detail oriented, you will remain clueless.
