but seriously, I tried 6 meg cable for a while, and decided it wasn't worth the cost. Webpages already came up instantly, so the extra speed didn't help there and downloads still ran the same speed most of the time because most of my sources didn't have enough upload to max my connection out/my hardware can't write that fast (I never did the math, but it's one or the other.) I went back to the 3 meg and can't tell a difference, except for the extra 50 bones in my pocket. If the extra 3 didn't make a difference, what's another 37 gonna do?

The arguements "tearing apart" this post are absurd. "I can't go shooting in the street", "I can't yell fire in a theater", "I can't sell drugs". Do you want anarchy? Do you want your children playing outside where anybody can fire a gun as they see fit? and lets just let everybody have whatever drugs they want so they can run around blown out of their mind and do whatever they want. Now THAT sounds like a society i want to live in.

I agree that we have to fight for our freedoms, but at the same time we need to pick our battles. Fight for the stuff that matters. Step back and look at the big picture. Look at how the laws effects EVERYONE, not just yourself. You may want the right to do it, but do you want everyone to have that right? There are a lot of stupid people on this planet, and a lot of people who take things too far. That's why we have restrictions on who can do what and when and where they can do it. Would you want me fixing your car, even though i don't know a carburetor from a fuel injector? Would you want G.W. teaching your kids English? People have to get degrees and licenses for a reason. (tho i concede the beautician license is a bit absurd, I've never feared for my life getting a hair cut or trimming my nails)

My point is before you fight for some silly freedom (like legalizing drugs) Don't think about how great it would be for you, think about what Joe Blow down the street would do, or how much it would effect your kids. Just because you are smart enough to handle a freedom doesn't mean all of America is.

Sorry bout the offtopic, but i've been noticing the problems you were talking about on EVERY new dell i've seen in the last few months. XP and Vista. So I dont know that you can attribute all your problems to the OS. I think a lot of it has to do with all the crap they install. (ug, defending vista...i feel dirty)

But i'd still rather run Ubuntu. Anybody who thinks installing windows is easier than linux, hasn't installed feisty fawn. My last 4 windows installs have come up in 640x480 4bit because the video card wasn't recognized, the sound didn't work, and the network card didn't work. Not to mention it took forever to install. I boot ubuntu on the same machine (in minutes) and everything works perfectly. In fact, the feisty fawn install disk has become part of my windows install. I boot the live cd, download the drivers i need to my thumbdrive, reboot into windows and install them. Point being: Not only is Linux EASIER to install, it's made Windows EASIER to install too. now THATS a good operating system.

A lot of companies are pulling back to the states, but they still outsource it, and the companies they use place centers in towns with lower incomes. They get huge tax breaks to bring the business in and can pay much lower wages. These towns have smaller populations and it's hard to get knowledgeable people to work there, so they hire anyone that can say "Thank you for calling tech support". The English is better, but the support is not.

  8. Re:Probably Red-Tape on Dell Refuses to Sell Ubuntu to Business · · Score: 4, Interesting

My guess is this probably has a lot to do with tech support. They outsource their support to the lowest bidders, and the lowest bidder then runs their support through a call center in India or some little podunk town in the states. These people then hire anybody able to speak into a headset. Some don't know anything about a computer other than how to play solitaire, others can barely turn one on. Teaching a whole new operating system to them would take years, IF it could be done at all. That's why they dropped the hardware support, and why they can't sell them to businesses. They know they have no way of offering reliable support for them, and they dont want to piss off their business customers with horrible tech support and risk getting a lawsuit against them for lost revenue.

I loath Microsoft, but I understand where Dell is coming from with their lack of support for Ubuntu, it's just not financially viable to train agents to support it. They have to protect the stockholders first and customers come second. I disapprove of this system, but that's a rant for another thread. I see a day in the distant future where Dell will slowly begin expanding it's Ubuntu selection and support. But i think it will be a long long time, and people complaining about how poorly they are doing now is only going to discourage their effort.

You might want to consider a sedative - the rage and foaming-at-the-mouth apoplexies you get into on this whole issue surely can't be good for your holistic wellbeing.

Actually, there are quite a few places banning the upgrade to Vista and O2k7. Like the California DoT. I'd say the "fraction of a percent" you mentioned is actually quite a bit larger than you think it is. It was enough to get Dell to go back to selling xp boxes. Even Staples managed to sell out their XP computers when the Vista stock came in. If Vista is so great, why were people picking up XP computers, with Vista on the shelf right next to them and at comparable prices? Why are people who bought Dell computers with XP not installing the free Vista upgrade? Vista is not the abomination that Linux Fanboys are declaring it, but it is hardly the great Operating System Microsoft has convinced you it is.
