Okay mods, do your stuff! Pegame duro! I'm getting excited already.

Oh. Do you think these laws were passed on their merits? Is there any evidence of that? What is the possible merit of extending copyright to 75 years after the creator is dead? Or DMCA? Do some research and prove him wrong if that's what you believe. There are some things that are fairly obvious in their own right. You're asking him to prove that the sky is blue or water is wet. And the mods get pretty defensive if anyone dares point out how ugly the truth really is when spelled out in an easy to understand fashion. So the bar is still fairly high.

Agreed. I think the big problem will be simple "corrosion" for lack of a better word. One bad cap, and poof. Surface mount components are a bit tricky to install with a 100 watt soldering iron. The really good news will come with desktop replicators where we can simply "print out" new hardware. Then we shall truly be "free at last" from the tyranny of the current situation. This will finally put the means of production in the hands of the people and the chains will fall away. I'm very optimistic that we are close to achieving that goal. The negative possibility is that of the powers that be will make a great attempt to restrict access to such equipment. The cool thing is that once it's out, there will be no stopping it.

I don't know how long it could sit before it corrodes away, but it sure will come in handy to insure that at my neighbors could have an affordable machine over the next decade at least. I would advise also that people stop buying the latest new gadget every week. This all really stinks for those who normally have no need to upgrade when the old stuff is working perfectly fine. Got a ten year old MMX machine that works perfectly with win98 and office 97. And these people are trying to break it by making all the new formats incompatible. At the same time, I think I'll take up the fine art of dumpster diving and continue to help people break away from Microsoft. Come to think of it, this really shouldn't an issue anymore. The Microsoft stranglehold is an irrational illusion, now that we have a viable alternative. Just need CAD and some games to keep gen-pop happy.

In those cases, they have no business meddling in my personal life. And I would place strict controls on landlords who want personal financial information. The system is way too abusive in those cases of housing, where everybody needs a place to live. The landlords can work with month to month rentals with a pay as you go system. They should not be allowed to demand a year long lease with the unstable market we have now. I decide how intrusive people can be by choosing the type of work I take. I would hope that people would stand together to keep it under control. But usually that's not the case.

Most people, and I would include the ones who responded to my original post, are quick to dismiss the concept of temporary insanity, which is sad, because it does happen. It's more about who's pocket the news is in.

This is a given. Which is why I like, as you do, the net for its variety of sources. It helps to remove control of information from corp and gov't alike. You can be sure that the intentions of the corps are closely matched to the governments. It's always about money, power, and chicks. Both use the wild parties to grease the wheels of business. That's how "progress" is made...I mean profit. The corps use government to set the rules to create and maintain their power. Copyright is my favorite, and recently most blatant example. They need the military might, and the government, with the full support of the people, in "democratic" societies anyway, is happy to supply it at a "reasonable" cost. They go very much hand in hand. The British press is wonderful at suppling relatively unbiased news from around the world. At the same time we must recognize the British interests outside their borders is just as intense as the Americans. More so in the case of the Middle East. This whole Iraq thing is a huge "wag the dog" thing. I have doubts about their honesty at home, as referenced by the original link (I did link to something, right? Now I forget...looking at top of page,...Oh yes, cool). Many times you will usually get more accurate reporting from disinterested third parties from outside your borders where they can take the view from the outside looking in. I understand your view about the BBC, but as you said, you're seeing from an American POV. I would also be interested to hear a POV from, say, an African, Indian, or Chinese, for example. Of course they would need to live in both countries for some time. Please don't think I'm belittling your opinion by any means, I'm not. But I'm not any more mystified by the corp's position than I am by the government's. For me they are just two parts of the same thing. And for the most part, people seem to think this is just fine. Otherwise we would see a different power structure in place.

Everything you do, every desire you have is caused by genetics and environment. Can you show me absolute proof of a free will? Totally independent of what is going on in your brain? Net Geo put it best in the March 2005 cover story, "The mind is what the brain does." A quick glance just might help to slow your rush to judgement. For an added bonus, read up on how a simple change of diet is doing wonders for some autistic kids who are presently under the influence of dangerous drugs. I quickly lost my similar arrogant attitude when I just started skimming the subject. It becomes a matter of simple mechanics and chemistry, not some mystical spiritual "morality". You just might realize that your desires might not be your own, but merely a result of past experiences and how you were told to react, and of course your genetic disposition.

I could just as easily blow them off as lazy bums, too, because I'm healthy, not easily subject to physical addictions, bla bla bla. But the fact is we are heavily influenced by these things. This whole "free will" thing isn't so cut and dry as you would like to think. It gives all the needed credence to the ever famous saying "Judge not!" I believe those are good words to live by.
