We live in a market driven society. Big difference. Where the pushers convince people to buy what they don't need, or even want, but are now addicted to. They have to control that market, by being the only authorized distributor of everything.
Personally I have plenty of drives. And, like they say, all available space will be used...
...But you didn't use it or your decks to check email, browse the web, or buy/rent movies online back then.
That's what computers are for:-) But of course I see your point. I might tweak the decks, but only so far to make them do what they normally do a little better. Like upping the RF levels a tiny bit to minimize tracking problems from other people's tapes.
...as it has proved to be a very effective incentive to create works...
Without anything to compare that to, on what do you base that assumption? The sole legitimate concern of copyright, and patents is the control of plagiarism. The right to use and copy, with proper attribution, should not be infringed. As it stands today, copyright is the classic case of "when you give an inch, they take a mile". When you give undue authority to people, they invariably crave more. A true slippery slope that has become a cliff.
An 80-year-old couple is having trouble remembering things, so they go
to the doctor to make sure there's nothing wrong.
After an exam, the doctor says, "You're physically okay, but you guys
might want to start writing notes to help you remember things."
That night they're watching TV when the old man gets up from his chair.
His wife says, "Where are you going?"
He says, "I'm going to the kitchen to get a glass of water."
She says, "Will you get me some Vanilla ice cream?"
He says, "All right."
She says, "Don't you think you should write it down?"
He says, "I don't have to write it down. Vanilla ice cream."
She says, "And could I have strawberries and whipped cream?"
He says, "All right."
She says, "Don't you think you should write it down?"
He says, "I don't have to write it down.Vanilla ice cream with
strawberries and whipped cream."
Twenty minutes later he walks in and hands her a plate of bacon and eggs.
She says, "You forgot my fucking toast."
Point taken. That's why I see the push for such precision to be detrimental. It turns the molehill of technicalities into an unsurmountable mountain. It keeps the law and many matters of governance in general out of reach from everyday folks and relegates all the power to the mystics and high priests of the business, so to speak. It creates needless complexity for that sole purpose. So now we get some licenses that are larger that the entire American constitution. It is all making a "meeting of the minds" and that level of pragmatism more difficult to achieve, and there are those who aim to profit from the resulting conflicts among us.
he reason there hasn't been a lot of action in the courts with regards to the GPL is that it IS such an obvious and strong license.
I hope you are right. And you probably are as many businesses can work with it and make great profits from it. I'm just suspicious that they are biding their time plotting in the back room how to defeat it because their desire for control of everything.
I don't think I'm disagreeing with you. I just wish to simplify things. Looking for a "unified theory" of human interaction. Reduce the equation... It was lots of fun in mathematics. It should apply here also.
My statement has more to do with the deficiency of language in general when trying to impose such precision. I do indeed understand the necessity of the GPL as long as copyright remains on the books, even with my belief that public domain can accomplish the same thing, with the added benefit of avoiding the license bloat that we are currently being burdened with. Well, this might be a good test in the ongoing attempt to validate the GPL in the courts. At the same time, like everything else, it will never be completely resolved. Somebody will always try to challenge it. Even if it is to reach the supreme court. Just like Roe vs. Wade. Please, people, don't carry off onto that wild tangent with that. I'm just trying to say that nothing is absolute. Hell, there are folks that can "prove" that 2+2 does not equal 4.
Considering all the differences of opinion when two or more people read the same statement, it seems the law can be interpreted, but never understood or defined clearly. A good lawyer can make any word in the dictionary mean anything he wants it to.
when all the remaining candidates are clones of each other. The war will go on. The patriot act, DMCA, etc aren't going anywhere. Censorship of the internet and tracking will continue to increase. You all can be expected to need your national ID card or an electronic bracelet or implant or tattoo if you want to leave the house. All hope of any change in course is lost until at least 2012. And if the present power structure comes under any real threat, you can bet that there will be no elections then.
We can knock then both out by kicking out the one big law that props them both up. Their intents and tactics can be traced to that one undeniable link.
misused copyright law in any way. They are using it in its true prearranged fashion. This is what copyright is for. This is the supreme, ne, the only reason for its existence. This is not an unintended effect. Please, try to see and think beyond the spin.
Um, I think if you take a look at what I was basing my post on, If you're an individual and not a post production facility, test the upgrade on a separate partition or physical volume., you might see why I said what I said. A post house obviously will have what is needed to keep things running smoothly. The news crew has all their machines online. No time for silly updates, except maybe on Sunday. An individual usually has one machine, one partition, one hard drive, and an external backup. As far as not doing professional video myself, I guess I'll have rethink what people were paying me for. Must be my handsome face and wonderful demeanor, or maybe I'm just a good dancer:-) And do the pros actually use Premiere? Maybe for the wedding videos... Hell, give me two Sony 5850s and an RM440 with a used itty-bitty Grass swicther and I'm more than happy. And can usually whip something out faster than you can say "render sequence".
Even with that I would have issues since most Macs that I know of only come with one partition on one hard drive, and I'm not prone to reformatting and reinstalling stuff until something breaks, also. I admit that I never tried booting one from a USB drive. It's probably better to hack out the DRM. What a pain! And the Mac is still far and away the most pleasurable computer to work with. Why is there no widespread resistance to this? Are we that addicted to convenience that we will swallow anything thrown at us because it's "cool"? I could turn it into a political thing, but...BAH! Actually, with enough noise being made about it, I have confidence that it will be fixed, but this whole copyright thing really has to be dealt with, and there's only one way to do that.
If you're an individual and not a post production facility, test the upgrade on a separate partition or physical volume.
If you're an individual and not a post production facility, what are the chances of you having an extra Mac lying around to test? I've gotten to the point where I just turn off the updates in Windows. Now I need to do that on the Mac, and wait for a Slashdot article to see if it's safe, or until something breaks. Bummer. Anybody got an old Avid machine with OS 9?

Now wait a second...If the ink's not magnetic, how does it...oh...ok...nevermind.

That's old data. Greece(?!) is number one now. The trend indicates that "off the planet" is the best option.

Unfortunately it appears that the GPL does not allow this particular action.
Only for him, maybe. For the rest of us, just the opposite is true. It is quite fortunate that this isn't permitted.

The powers that be are trying to turn the web into TV by killing P2P and limiting uploading and private servers.
Then let's dump the market economy. It just causes grief for the vast majority of people on the planet anyway.

But this isn't a matter of spinelessness. It's more of a matter of just plain corruption.
