    First off, it doesn't matter anymore what business they have interfering with traffic. By default we gave them that authority by protecting their monopoly. They can and will do what they please, and most will believe it's "for our protection", and we know what happens to those who disagree.

    As for deciphering the data, they can easily set the rules as to what kind of traffic can pass. Getting through will be our problem. As long as we're stuck with their wire, we are stuck with their rules.

    Furthermore, any form of network or P2P encryption currently in use ought to be able to defeat this.

    "Unauthorized" protocols are even easier to filter and block. Attempts to defeat these mechanisms will be dealt with harshly.

    I don't see how we could jump-start a magnetic field...

    You'd have to reheat(relight?) the core. That's where the atmosphere comes from. Then you need oceans full of water and plant life to filter it. Mars is dead. Cold as a cucumber. In the case of Venus, a great big Stirling fridge will cool it down a bit and condense everything we need.

    Heh, sounds like a good restriction to place on a congressperson's max time in office and on their own retirement plan. That, and take away their automatic raises.

    How does monitoring bits over a wire limit your freedom or prevent you from voting?

    Ask Shi Tao, or Li Zhi. Don't think that people aren't being harassed elsewhere. It's just done through traffic stops, or tax audits, etc. Things that don't make the papers.

    Heh, Don't be surprised when the IRS starts to tax the money you save if you pay less than retail, and your frequent flier miles. They'll squeeze you any way they can. Too bad not enough people get mad enough to do anything about about it.

    I never said how much more :-) And I was talking "current", which is fairly steady in the deflection coils(not individually, but as a whole). The beam current can vary from 0 to 6 milliamps. It comes out to around 100 watts for a white screen, depending on the voltage(between 15K and 20K?) That's a pretty big margin in the power department. The spot being hit by the beam is extremely bright.

    Start by covering up all the LEDs on your electronic devices. And kill that stupid "chirping" noise every time you turn on/off your car alarm. Haven't you seen enough stalker movies to know that?

    Well, he was talking about CRTs. And you are wrong on both counts. On a CRT more current flows to make the screen white. For an LCD, just remove the signal or power from the screen, but not the light and the pixels go "black". However...transmitting black over air takes more energy. And the sync pulse, even more.
