I heard someone once say in response to space colonies: Try building a self-sustaining colony in Antarctica. And when you realize how freaking hard that is, remind yourself that at least you can breathe the air and you won't pop if there's a hole in the wall. Antarctica is a bazillion times more hospitable that any space colony would be.
If you're born poor in the US, your chances of making it to the middle class are lower than those of a poor person in quite a few other industrialized countries. It's shameful is what it is.
I know it's popular to predict doom and gloom for Microsoft but I really don't understand what Balmer is thinking.
If they are transitioning to a devices and services company that kind of means they are transitioning away from the things that have made them successful.
I'm actually kind of giddy at the thought of some real competition in the corporate arena, seeing as how Microsoft continues to drop the ball.
You'd think that the rest of DOMA's days are numbered now.
How does this work? Do the other parts of DOMA have to be challenged to get rid of them? I can't imagine the Court saying "You can't treat gay marriages differently" and then allow the states to treat marriages differently. The states still have to do what's constitutional.
The Bible says nothing of the sort. The Bible says your wife's servant should sire you an heir if your wife can't. If you wanted to defend a definition of marriage that says one man + one woman, the Bible is that last book I'd use.
I hear good things from Ocean Marketing about the Avenger controller for disabled players. They will also wwebsite as on the internet, which will be tough to compete with.
Or perhaps they just wanted to get their emails on their smartphone and had to skirt the IT policies by forwarding everything from their business account to their personal account. The they hit "Reply", it comes from their personal account, and next thing you know, business is being conducted through the personal account.
You could almost start wondering if this is a marketing move. Dwindling use in a non-flagship product... say you're discontinuing it and BOM the internet lights up with people talking about how much they love it and can't live without it and how it's the awesomest product ever. Tons of positive buzz. "We listened to our users and have decided to continue Google Reader for the foreseeable future"
I got the impression that it wasn't just grunts that were telecommuting. The cogs churn out code and that can be done from anywhere, frankly. China, India, Topeka. You're right, they don't matter. But when people that have influence and are decision makers are working from home, then you can have problems, especially when you're trying to turn the ship around.
I can see telecommuting being ok when you've got an established company and clear objectives/projects, etc. When you're reorganizing, just starting, or trying to turn the fortunes of your company around I think you really have to work "together".

Taco Machines?
I'm not sure why you think a link to taco machines is relevant to the discussion.
Is there a problem that guns can't solve?
I think someone needs to step up to let the voters know what they can do if they disagree with this stuff. The ACLU and EFF might be good candidates.
How can we organize our votes to make this shit stop?

The federal government has to recognize gay marriage because NOT doing so is unconstitutional.
The states have to follow the constitution too.

I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that Slashdot doesn't have much use for humanities but I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Do you go to college to get a job or to become a better person? I think the typical answer to that question has changed a lot over the years.

I could care less if you're frustrated by that.
Oh boy, it would help if I read tfs, eh?
I'll go hide over here....

Nope, the number of murders with a firearm far far exceed any assaults that were stopped by one. A billion to one.
Yes, my numbers are just as trustworthy as yours.
It's always interesting when logic and science gets pitted against libertarianism on Slashdot.
We learned our lesson with NEC too. Never again.
It works fine for me across devices, stays in sync, gets archived to my gmail, it's xmpp...
You are talking about income. I wonder what the difference would be between a top 10%er's income versus capital gains.

Who knows...

"17 years" seems like an oddly specific number.
With all those players on one side of the issue, it's pretty easy choose sides... even if you don't know what the issue at hand is.
If you don't vote for the lesser of two evils you get Vice President Sarah Palin.
