  1. wear and tear on USB drive? on Ultaportable Apps: Take Your Thumbware Anywhere · · Score: 2, Interesting

Any specific evidence from anyone on the wear and tear on flash drives, that thousands of read/write cycles can inflict? Anytime I've read elsewhere about people running applications off USB drives, someone has mentioned r/w cycles. Anyone have a drive fail from this?

But in this case, "some people thought it was blasphemous" could mean as few as two. Saying there were 137 participants in the survey, but not providing the number that objected, is IMHO a psychological trick meant to imply the number that objected was significant. If they weren't willing to disclose the number of objectors, then they shouldn't have stated the number of participants, either.

(of course the same argument could be used to say that "some thought it was well done" could mean as few as two also. I'm just saying that Murray's spin on the numbers feels smarmy and manipulative to me).

I don't doubt your story, I laugh at the clearly deficient system design that required someone to personally visit every desktop for some "upgrade". Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. The other replies to parent are a bit harsh, but essentially there are options for getting and sharing broadband. Broadband does not mean just ADSL or Cable. There's T1/DS1 ($ not that bad through Speakeasy and others), 144Kbps IDSL (longer distance than SDSL or ADSL), and 128Kbps ISDN (which I easily got at 30k feet from switch - should go much further). You can recoup circuit costs by WiFi sharing in your neighborhood if your ISP allows it (Speakeasy does). See my posting history for another comment on this story about Speakeasy T1.

Disclaimer: I don't work for Speakeasy. I am not a paid mouthpiece. I simply like their service and their sensible sharing policies.

It better not prevent local sharing. I maintain a Speakeasy T1 line for my home office, and recently have begun sharing out bandwidth via WiFi in my neighborhood, using Speakeasy's Netshare program. I have essentially become a mini 'WISP'. No other broadband is available to my area (too far for DSL; no cable internet; DirecPC/Starband just ain't all that great; etc), so I am providing a valuable service to those that can't afford their own ISDN or T1. They love me for it. My state better not be bullied by Big Broadband to prevent me from doing this.

And /. has already gone down that long road arguing the pros/cons of sharing bandwidth with your neighbors, I know all the arguments, I've done all the precautions, we're not going there for this discussion.

Indeed for CNN, at least at the outset. The takeoff (or any of the pre-takeoff prep) was not broadcast live on mainstream CNN because they were debating BTK, missing nine year old girls, and Michael Jackson the entire day.

And I would have to say, the live commentary during the landing by CNN anchors was just short of nauseating. The constant blathering by the completely uninformed hosts was annoying... they couldn't find it in themselves to shut up and let the mission audio play by itself a-la NASA-TV. Had to turn the sound down.

To the lady anchor on this afternoon during the landing (don't remember her name): that "big red thing" above Steve's head was not the fuel tank - it was the engine.

To me that says he passed over the same point in both directions, meeting your criteria. Notice that he taxied almost completely down to the far end of the runway after landing, before turning off to the taxiway. He used all but 4000 feet of the 13,500 runway on takeoff, so it seems to me he crossed the same point on takeoff and landing.
