As mentioned here (pdf, google-converted, orriginal pdf here) the rovers use The ICER Progressive Wavelet Image Compressor, which according to JPL (googlified de-pdfing again, original here)
Both lossless and lossy compression will be used, depending on how critical or scientific the data is.
The 2nd pdf goes into depth about how the algorthims are used and is probably an interesting read for someone who has a greater understanding of maths and compression techniques;)
I'm sure the laserdisc originals are out there somewhere, if we're really lucky we'd be able to choose which version to watch from the menu... as long as there is a "Solo shoots first" option...
When each twin-lens CCD (charge-coupled device) camera takes pictures, the electronic images will be sent to the rover's onboard computer for a number of onboard image processing steps, including compression, before the data are sent to Earth
Unfortuantly I can't find any references as to the loss{y|less}ness of the compression used
The answer is simple, the spammers (the ones doing the spammage, not the ones selling the products) are probably making money from every e-mail sent. As such if they dropped the 1,000,000's of e-mail address they knew were being blocked from their lists, they'd lose 1,000,000 * [profit per e-mail]
The best solution for this would be get yourself a 2nd address, even if it is just a redirect and use that for e-bay, filter incomming messages for that to their own imap folder (or whatever takes your fancy) and junk E-Bay references that arrive at any other address.
I know its a simple solution and i've probably overlooked the fact that not every ISP gives their users a nice <anything at all>@username.isp.net pop3/imap/smtp-queue like mine.
NASA have been hit hard by MyDoom "It's been overwhelming. My e-mail is overflowing," said Steve Beckwith, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute.
Just set up a couple of 5.2 boxes, both quite merrily get a dhcp address from the XP ICS server, and one now quite happily gives IP addresses via DHCP since it has replaced the ICS box and provides firewall and natd for the USB alcatel modem, everything compiled from ports with no problem.
But unfortunatly NASA didn't anticipate finding liquid water on Mars, and so decided to save a few bucks on not water proofing the rovers, which would be fine if Spirit hadn't decided to go for a swim in the puddle it found
I'll add mine here
The biggest advantage to the FreeBSD ports vs. FreeBSD packages I've seen (and most activly use) is that whenever you compile any port from source it uses your global make.conf settings, as such all my ports are compiled with -O2 -mcpu=athlon-xp for those few less bytes and picosecond execution time.
Just my 2c while I buildworld to 5.2 and then portupgrade -aRrF;)
They are arguing over the next-gen DVD format when they can't even settle on the recordable/re-writable format for the current generation.
As long as it fits the extended trilogy of LOTR on one disc I don't really mind.

Hey does anyone know if there's a bounty on this guy in a red suit? I saw him breaking into the other houses on my street before he tried mine
I had a problem with 5.2-RC1 where by on boot the kernel would detect the HDD and say [MPSAFE] and then pause for a while, this struck me as odd, mostly because i interperated MP to be Multi-Processor, and i was on a Uniprocessor machine (and thats an AMD, not an Intel P4 w/ HyperThreading, which i know is set up as a virtual CPU in the kernel for scheduling)
If anyone knows if this has been resolved, I'll probably update my box from 5.1 to 5.2-RC2 tonight.
As a side note, I'm curious as to what ports are broken, I've yet to encounter one that I can't compile under 5.x, including all the things I used to run under 4.x/3.x/2.2.x (yes i've had the same FreeBSD box that long)
And line of code for line of code there are less known errors in MySQL than there are assumed/predicted/mean errors in their commercial counterparts, but that doesn't answer the question of how does MySQL compare performance-wise to Oracle or <flameretardent coating>MS SQL 2003</flameretardent coating>
until little jamie finds out that he and daddy share no genetic material, before this gets released, let me buy shares in the paper divorce orders are printed on... ;)
To point hubble at the discovery for a real closer look.
;)
-- Nothing more to say on the matter, mostly due to being 2 hours from finishing work and I need a new desktop background
