  1. My problem with the movies on Napster to Offer Movie Downloads · · Score: 1

If we weren't spending 5 bucks for a coke and 4 bucks for a box of sno-caps, and another 4.50 for a lunchbag full of popcorn, then another 13 bucks to see the movie, which is prempted by a half an hour of commercials. People would probably go to the movies more.

I know I don't go because I can't afford to spend 50 bucks every time I want to see a movie with my wife.. We would rather just pay the netflix subscription and wait for it to come out on dvd. If napster provided the movies for a cheap price, in iso format, and dolled out enough bandwith... I'd be happy to invest some of my hard earned cash into it.

Here here! I lived in a tiny town in michigan, the only "real" work in said town was a factory. My father belonged to this factory, as did my mother and many of my neighbors. The entire town had the mindset of "If you work for said factory, you have a decent job and will get taken care of the rest of your life." I told my father I wanted to work with computers (this was the early 80's). My father said I should apply at the factory, since I was family I'd surely get a job. Also that I shouldn't worry about that computer stuff, it's never going to go anywhere. Well I never took a job with the factory, went on to do what I felt was right for me.. My father, however, went on disability from the factory 2 months before it shut down permanently. He never worked another day in his life. The only thing I'll end up passing to my son and daughter is: "Work smarter, not harder. Because people who work hard, always pay dearly for it in one way or another."

I currently use Thunderbird as a replacement for Outlook. I installed the Mozilla Calender plugin for my scheduling and todo list needs. I use a little program called Thundertray to minimize it to tray when it's not up. I use LDAP for a global addressbook (I'm actually using Active Directory to function as the LDAP server). On top of all that, I get my RSS feeds in the same app.

All in all, it's less maintenance, doesn't hog half as much memory, and just overall a cleaner program. I can't wait till the 1.0 version of Sunbird is out, then I can probably get rid of the mozilla calender.

"PC games will never go away, but if the market keeps shrinking due to the increasing ease of piracy... then the number and quality of games will almost certainly decrease." The quality of games have already decreased. Actually that's not a fair statement.. I think it's more fair to say that the Quanity of poorly made or playable games has increased. In fact, it's getting to the point that that's all you see anymore. What makes it worse is that unless you wait 6 months or so, the price doesn't drop to a respectable price. (40 bucks is resonable, not 60+ like I always see them for) I pirate games, as well as other software. I do it for 1 simple reason. Demo's are worthless, they do not show the true quality of an application or game. To get that you need to use said application or game for more than 10 days. Sometimes more than a month. I have spent literally thousands of dollars on games I have never played more than 2 hours of. I do purchase those games and applications I find worthy of my hard earned money. I even pay subscriptions to MMORPG's that I like. But I refuse to give 1 red cent to any company that produces junk.

I love NewEgg not only in terms of price. But in terms of customer service. Also there are combo deals where you can get nice little freebies. Check them out when you place an order. You get hats or free rounded cables. Some nice tee shirts and crystal pieces as well.

It really is one of the best dealers out there. Definitely worth checking out.

I have only bought from tiger once in my lifetime. It took 2 months for them to ship the motherboard and CPU combo I purchased. When I got the motherboard in, it was DOA, I had to pay to ship it back. Pay for the replacement, and had to fight with them to get the credit back to my account. Since then I've used newegg.com and it has always been cheaper, I rarely and I mean VERY RARELY get a DOA part. And when I do, I call customer service and they get me a new one ASAP. I use them as my primary vendor here at work and probably have spent over $10,000 in the past 6 months (rough estimate). I've not once recieved a bad part. I honestly can't see how anyone would ever order from Tiger more than once, especially after reading that BBB report. Also trying to support Tiger by saying there are other merchants with crappy return policies is like trying to say that because one person is a rapist, it's ok for your neighbor to be one too. Many stores do not have crappy return policies, and all you have to do is check with the vendor on resellerratings.com to find out.

  16. Re:What I want in a User Linux on What Might UserLinux Look Like? · · Score: 1

I totally agree, there are many of us Windows guys who would love to use Linux. But a lot of the problem is that there's such a steep learning curve, that most people get frustrated, confused, or even bored with linux. As you stated, some of them even before it get's fully installed. What I want to see is some more compatibility between windows applications and the Linux operating system. Yes I know there are many windows emulation packages such as wine, but again it comes down to the learning curve. I want things to just run when I click on them, I don't want to type out 90 character command lines, I don't want to edit 39271902 conf files. Everything in Linux should be configurable in a gui. I should not have to open a command window for very many things at all, including compatibility settings. The 1 main reason why I keep Windows around is games. I play alot of games, and I find that you just can't run some of them on linux. Well I'm sure you can but you have to shake a dog, edit 17 diffrent config files, sacrifice a chicken, type in a long command and then pray to Bob it works. I just want to click on it and have it run, but give me the option to do those things later to tweak if I want to or need to. The install should not have 17 diffrent browsers, 6 diffrent window managers, 300 diffrent compilers, and 2981099432 useless games. If I want or need something, I'll download it and install it myself. Speaking of installations, for Bob's sake make an installer file for applications you download. RPM was a good idea, except for dependancies.. I don't want to have to hunt for 402 other RPMs just to satisfy the dependancies. I should not *have* to compile my own drivers, ever... Period. End of story. For Bob's sake, try to standardize on some applications. I know there are the Gnome people, and the KDE people, and probably 208102 various proponants of thier respective favorite window manager, but pick something and go with it. The gui should be intuitive, and by that I mean I should not have to re-learn much. Applications in the start menu (or whatever they call it in Linux) should be laid out in a convienient fashion. Apps, games, System tools. And then don't put the same app in 3 diffrent locations as I've seen some distros do. What you have to understand is that Windows people are a funny bird. They don't want to spend hours recompiling thier kernel, they just want to download a new one and be done with it. We are not only lazy, but have a short attention span. If you want UserLinux to pull from this market, you need to understand this, otherwise it hasn't got a chance in Hades I'm afraid.
